I just went to see it a little while ago.
It rocked

Oh, I really wanted to see that. My mom will be pleased to hear that "someone I know said it was really good."

Every single review I have hear or seen of the film has been extremely positive.  I think $75 million is a low estimate.

The plot involves time travel, which for good or ill gave them freedom to meddle with the established history of Trek.

Some changes had me scratching my head but overall I thought it was a great ride.  Bones and Scotty were particularly awesome.

Although I agree with the Schaef's review in it's entirety, the above comment is worth triple bonuses.

For an alternative view, check out The Onion (checked to make sure the clip and comments are family friendly)...

[modbreak=Schaef]Sadly, clip removed because, despite making it through the whole segment with clean language and even most of the crawl, one of the crawl headlines was inappropriate for younguns.  Thanks for spoiling another fantastic video, Onion.[/modbreak]

Sorry, Stephen, I missed that one.

Seeing it tomorrow.

Really stoked. I've seen every non-enterprise Star Trek, most of them a dozen times.

um, what is a non-enterprise Star Trek?

I am assuming voyager and DS9 but maybe he means the non original series

There's a horrible show called "Enterprise" which is a non-cannonical Star Trek.

Finally a Star Trek for the younger generation...

I had mixed feelings about it.  There was a lot of stuff that happened that did not make sense.  A lot of things happened in this movie that do not fit into the "star Trek universe"

on its own, it was a pretty good movie.

but trying to fit this into the star trek history is like trying to fit a square peg into round hole.  it just doesn't go.

Well, technically it's an alternate timeline.

As the resident Russian, I have to say that Pavel Chekov was rather well cast.

It "doesn't go" on purpose.  Nero's trip through time altered history.  In this altered timeline the writers are free to take creative liberties that don't have to be shoehorned into the existing Trek canon.  It's sort of like if someone made movies about the mirror universe, and we followed along to see the goatee Spock et al.

yeah, but this basially sets aside the ENTIRE star trek pantheon.  now everything doesnt exist, all the movies, all the series's

dont you find that a bit troubling?

They all do inside the "true" Star Trek timeline

Depends on how you view time travel.

In "closed" time travel, everything you do just causes the universe to be the way it was supposed to be in the first place.  See also: Terminator.

In "open" time travel, the change splits off this timeline from the other, and we go down a different rabbit hole.  The other universe does exist, it just exists differently.  Like the old DC universe that had like 100 Earths.

Star Trek as we know it is the universe that exists in the timeline where the crew was able to "fix" time and go about their business.  This is only mostly true, since each travel made some small changes (transparent aluminum?).  So to me the old universe doesn't cease to exist; it's still there, and this series of films is an Elseworlds story, a What If.

I personally like to think that time can't change, saving us from these conundrums.

Do you guys remember the episode of voyager where they developed temporal shielding? It was "Year of Hell Part 1 and 2"; probably the most fun time episode.

I remember the 2 episodes you speak of quite well. They were very good indeed. I was almost expecting an end to the movie much like the end of "Year of Hell" episode ended.

In season 5 voyager had a couple other very interesting time travel episdoes with "Timeless" and "Relativity". In both episodes one of the crew members has to go back in time to save Voyager's very existance. Time travel is always fun to watch.

Finally got to go see Star Trek and I absolutely loved it.  Was somewhat surprised to see Tyler Perry (Madea) in there as Admiral Burnett....

I guess he's a star trek Fan.

Of course Bones and Scottie were definitely the best!

"to have been"?? But what about now? Have you stopped playing? Do you have any of the other packs, or just NG? They've come up with a great way to incorporate all the crews by using wormholes and time travel.

I've got a bunch of cards from Decipher's Star Trek CCG. First Edition of course. Fun game, but now I'm looking to get rid of them all.

I stopped playing after All Good Things, never cared for the second edition.

I had a sick strategy that allowed me to basically download my entire deck in one turn.

Romulans, naturally.
