The basic game is an excellent strategy game by itself, one of my favorites, but have you gotten the Cities and Knights expansion?  That's the expansion I recommend personally, and it adds a good amount to the game without being TOO complicated.

He is talking about the Cactus version, Settler of Canaan, not the original Settlers of Catan.

We just bought one as a gift for our friends. We haven't had a chance to play it with them yet.

Are there any expansions for the cactus version.  The game is simple enough for the ten yr old to grasp and also has enough strategy to keep my intrest. I just spot him a few victory points.

No, there are no expansions for Settlers of Canaan.

Redoubter was referencing (the best IMO) expansion for Settlers of Catan.

Playing Settlers of Canaan will give you experience for considering the next step of purchasing Settlers of Catan.   Catan has several expansions, plus the board is randomly generated, rather than fixed like Canaan. Realize, though, that Catan is expensive. You can get the original version at places like Target and Wal-Mart, but the expansions are harder to come by.

It's too bad that The Schaef isn't on the boards any more. He gave me a great deal on all expansions and the 5-6 player extensions through his online store.

Yeah, I was wrong and an idiot ;) Forgot Canaan was there, and just misread what you posted.  Would like to try it someday, but Catan is still one of my favorite games (though as YMT mentioned, it is NOT cheap).
