Post Voting (+1/-1)
« on: September 01, 2010, 01:36:23 PM »

I don't know how long this has been an option, but I just noticed it recently. Is there a reason it's there/allowed?

Redemption is a Christian card game and I don't believe these votes contribute to the atmosphere of building each other up that we as Christians are supposed to uphold. Reading threads across the forum, I see many posts that simply have a negative vote score and nothing else. Personally, I am very discouraged by this. It seems people have taken to simply "-1'ing" a post rather than replying to it with their reasoning as to why they disagree with something that was said in that post. I don't know about you, but I don't feel very built up when I see one of my posts with -4 but nothing said in reply to it. This voting gives the opportunity for people to vote negative if they simply disagree with, or perhaps if they just don't like, what was said rather than requiring them to post reasoning for their alternative opinion and have it be open for return criticism. This, to me, doesn't seem like a good policy. If you disagree, please explain why and what I'm missing. I would be happy to hear your side of things.

EDIT: I see nothing wrong with being able to +1 a post (especially since it's less spammy than "+1 I agree" replies), I am only concerned about the -1 option.

I agree especially the group of people going around -1'ing a whole thread because they don't like the thread

browarod,
It has been up for about a month or so.  At least, long enough to outlast most of the abusers.  Personally, I like the -1.  It allows me to show my disappointment or frustration with a hurtful post or spam, so that I don't have to repeat myself.  Overall post voting allows me to share my opinion without posting (especially if someone has already shared it) in a thread that is likely to become long and constantly showing up on my "threads you have posted in" link.  There are some threads that I have regretted ever posting in because of the length and constant updates (most likely because of spam) on the aforementioned link.
I don't know why one of your posts got a -4 because you typically don't spam and I don't remember you ever making any hateful remarks.  So my guess is that you got into a debate and 4 people disagree with you.  It allows people to disagree with you in a less confrontational way or lets them do some extra venting.  Also, there have been times I've -1ed someone and told them why as well.  I just felt that strongly about their post.
That's a bit of my take on it.   :)

The -4 was more an example than anything (I think the lowest any of my posts have gotten is -2), sorry for the confusion. Also, while I agree it's good to be able to express your opinion, I personally think it would be better to +1 someone else's post that says what you wanted to say rather than -1 the post that you disagree with. I do understand when someone is being rude and that it can get frustrating, and I am not referring to posts like that. I mean posts that simply state an opinion, reasons for why they believe that way, are perfectly legitimate and not derisive, and still have negative scores.

Schaef has said that if he could implement the +1 without the -1, he would, but that option isn't available. I like the -1, but only use it when I think a post is insulting or inappropriate, and like SS, if I feel strongly enough, I will post about it as well.

I'm glad to hear that, I just wish everyone was as courteous about their use of the -1 as you and SS.

EDIT: Case in point, my post at the top of this thread is now -2. I tried not to be rude, insulting, or inappropriate so I have no idea why it has been voted down.

I voted to disagree with your points of view without posting as such (though I am now required to because you aren't accepting disagreement like a man). It's not the end of the world to be -1'd. It really doesn't matter at all actually.

I voted it down for the lulz. I enjoy the irony of a thread about -1 being bad getting a lot of -1.

I agree with alstad and SS that you should only -1 someone if you strongly disagree with what they say and post about it. I also always -1 spam whenever i see it.

All I want to know is why I got a -1 for posting 3 questions in the Pithom thread.  Really?  Who would do that?

P.S. I gave a +1 to the initial post to try and start a +/- war.

This is the kind of attitude I am referring to. Clicking "-1" is not the same as posting, and I don't see why I should just "accept disagreement like a man". I don't know that you disagree simply by your -1 (especially since they're anonymous so I didn't even know it was you that clicked it), I don't know why you disagree, thus your -1 gives me absolutely no reason whatsoever to even consider your opinion (especially since your -1 doesn't express what your opinion even is), let alone enough to prove me wrong.

It may not matter to you, but it's very selfish to assume it doesn't matter to anyone.

If I wanted to present my opinion, I would. I now want to present it because I'm tired of seeing you whine like a girl about people disagreeing with you. You're acting as if being -1'd is stopping you from living your life productively or something. That's ridiculous. People -1 in order to express disagreement without having to post becuase they either don't want to express their personal view or their view is already being expressed.

If you can't accept being criticized anonymously via a system that is designed to encourage users to anonymously disagree with posts in order to promote less spam, perhaps you should go to the Mister Roger's Neighborhood forum. I hear they also give out free candy.

I'm not the one that's whining. At least I have the courtesy to post my thoughts and opinions rather than hiding behind an anonymous number.

You're acting as if being -1'd is stopping you from living your life productively or something.

No, I don't think I am...

That's ridiculous. People -1 in order to express disagreement without having to post becuase they either don't want to express their personal view or their view is already being expressed.

Voting a post down is expressing your opinion, so obviously you do want to express it. All I'm asking is that you explain yourself. As for it already being expressed, that's why I suggested earlier that you +1 the person you agree with rather than -1 the person you disagree with.

If you can't accept being criticized anonymously via a system that is designed to encourage users to anonymously disagree with posts in order to promote less spam, perhaps you should go to the Mister Roger's Neighborhood forum. I hear they also give out free candy.

I can accept criticism, I just think people should respect each other and treat each other decently enough to actually express specifics rather than simply utilizing an inefficient and unhelpfully flawed system. As for your recommendation to visit Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, I'll just assume you are frustrated for some reason and didn't mean to post spam.

I vote "+ 1 / -2" be implemented because this thread seems to take one step forward and two steps back.

FWIW, I received a prophetic message that Schaef would implement this feature, so that contributed to the timing of my retirement.

In other news, I caught a forty pound brook trout the other day.

No need to pull the respect card out. That's a line Christians use when they feel disrespected. Check back with me whenever we are discussing something you disagree with, rather than something I disagree with.

Why is it necessary to post this thread? The summary of the first post is essentially: Why do I get -1'd? This is a stupid system. *stuff about Jesus since this is a Christian forum* How is that beneficial? I don't care if you "have the courtesy to post your thoughts and opinions". If your thoughts and opinions are unneeded, then this topic is a waste of time. This is at least the second or third thread about this issue, not even counting various threads that get derailed with complaints about getting minused. Therefore, I view this topic as a waste of time because it is redundant. Because of that, I simply minused it rather than supporting it with a post. You then again complained about being targeted, so I explained myself so that you would understand, and you proceded to call me selfish

If you don't think being minused matters, why is this thread here?

I originally expressed my opinion that this thread is unnecessary with a minus rather than a post because it reduces forum clutter. I fail to see how that is bad at all and your arguments have all been so centered on being a victim that I am completely unconvinced so far.

Check my New Card Ideas thread. I disagree with people that think I should rewrite it shorter.

And how was I supposed to know that these were the reasons you disagreed when all I got was a -1? I can't read people's minds, I don't know what they think unless they say/type it. The only thing I called selfish was that you assumed nobody cared about pluses and minuses just because you don't."

I don't consider logical reasons to be "clutter" that should be avoided. Discussions cannot be carried out if arguments/opinions aren't posted to give the other side something to answer.

I may not like fish sandwiches, but I am not in the habit of arbitrarily minusing posts simply because I disagree with/don't like them. If it had been me, I would have posted expressing my opinion that fish doesn't taste very good to me and that, as a result, fish sandwiches are not yummy.
