Title: Overrated
Post by: TimMierz on February 24, 2009, 01:54:41 PM
Name somethings that are overrated, or that you just don't like as much as everyone else seems to. It can relate to anything. I'll start:

Led Zeppelin
chocolate ice cream
the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode of "I Accuse My Parents"
football
the beach

U2, Coldplay, girlfriends, American cars/beer, J.K. Rowling, football, Abraham Lincoln, King David, Aristotle, and many more.

Things that are under-ratted:
John Wilkes Booth, the Kinks, King Saul, and many more.

While I agree that people wrongly deify Lincoln, I'm curious as to what aspects of Mr. Booth you feel are underappreciated. I'm no expert on either Lincoln or Booth, but after reading Sarah Vowell's "Assassination Vacation" I find it tough to sympathize with Booth.

I agree with a shocking amount of items in your list though.

I believe that a lot of things are overrated.  This is just to name a few for now...

Duke and UK college basketball programs
Drugs and Alcohol
America (this is a sad self-realization: however, I do very much love my country.)
Credit Cards
relativism
the words of secular music
cheese
chocolate in general
cake
faddish *EDIT* quotes
Hollywood "looks"
Fast Food
going to the Movies as a first date
*EDIT*  the soul seeker

People use cell phones as a crutch.  There is absolutely no need to have text messaging, a camera, and any other random thing that you can get for your phone.  I went through my entire high school career without a cell phone and all of a sudden it is a necessity?  That's a bunch of garbage.

Change, people think change will solve everything.  They are wrong.

Agreed. People are basicly glued to their phones these days. Mine is rarely even on due to neglecting to charge the thing. We should have their name changed to "Mobile  messaging devices", since people hardly use them to physically talk anymore it seems.

Overrated:
The Israelites (not in an anti-semetic way),
protestantism,
sleep,
natural science,
money,
occupation,
government,
the "struggles" of African Americans.

Under rated:
 free-thinking,
art,
 insomnia,
education,
anarchy,
the struggles of Japanese Americans (concentration camps),
the struggles of Russian Americans (killed and imprisoned for "espionage"),
the struggles of Irish Americans (it was once lawful to shoot an Irish man for being Irish),
and the struggles of the rest of the races who have overcome great difficulty and don't demand pity for it.

IMO, faddish cliches, are quotes that people make just because everyone is doing it.  I'm not even sure if they're cliches now that I think about it.  I'll change it to faddish quotes.

Why is science a religion?

Overrated:
Video games (in general)
Eating (I actually have at some times in my life wished I could survive without food because I didn't want to take the time to eat)
Watching Sports
Any science that isn't physics (and possibly computer science (and technically math, but i don't think of it as a science))
Complexity (when its unnecessary)

Underrated
Physics
Being a nerd
Many other things can't think of at the moment

(I don't want to offend anyone who likes other sciences besides physics, I do think the others have their place in the scientific community as well as elsewhere)

I think using science for what is was never meant to do is overrated as well as using Christianity and the Bible for what is was never meant to do is also overrated (if you really want to get into a discussion about that it would probably be best to start a new topic)

I think math and logic are key to any natural science and I enjoy some philosophy from time to time (actually usually, but I don't get very much opportunity to discuss it with people who are actually interested in it and I don't want to take any classes on it) and they are often underrated

Title: Re: Overrated
Post by: ChristianSoldier on February 25, 2009, 09:56:01 PM
It's not meant to deal with things outside of our universe.  It has to do with the foundations of modern science
1) Logical thinking
2) Experimental Data
3) Occam's Razor

This means that for something to be science it should follow these principles, unfortunately science is inadequate to deal with supernatural occurrences and thus should not be expected to deal with God or a creation miracle so we shouldn't try to use it to prove creation or God, it is based on using the normal situations, not the exceptions in it.

Sports (not watching them, playing them) > video games.  Physical activity is a good thing.  I strongly suggest that you play a high school sport, I made a lot of my best friends through volleyball and frisbee (they also helped me cut back on video games and get in better shape).  I know that you can make friends playing video games too, but RL friends > virtual friends.

Im gonna agree with the twilight fad, Definately overrated, along with Harry Potter and all those before them

North Carolina basketball is also overrated, but not as much as UK
Notre Dame Football is overrated...and that is sad because I am a fan  :(
I will agree that Obama is Overrated because too many people have a messiah complex about the guy.  Dont get me wrong, I like him, I even voted for him, but he is overrated...but lets see what happens after the honeymoon.

macs.  I am sorrt but the macintosh did not change my life!
American Idol and Survivor.  Isn't it funny how un-real reality TV has become?
The Problems in Iran and/or N.Korea.  If either of these states allowed nukes to leave their borders then it would be over for them. Period.  they would become radioactive parking lots and piles of rubble.

ipods.  Mp3 players are a dime a dozen, I even have mp3s on my phone so why would I want to dump a bundle
horror movies.  I just haven't seen a real good horror movie since the original "scream" sorry
Fashion (and supermodels for that matter)
The westmister Dog Show
Caviar
Modern art
Pop music
NCLB  kids still get left behind all the time and the admin cooks the books (thats what you get when you use one method of assessment to determine competency)
Blu-ray DVD's and High Definition television in general
any brand label.  Some are obviously quality products, but most are simply the flavor of the month and that annoys me./

Underrated

The new BSG on Sci Fi.  It is a fantastic and powerful re-adaptation of an old hokie Sci-fi adventure
The 0/2 Red buckler. Defense FTW!  no, wait I mean Stalemate?
Redemption D3.  Metalpsalms site is fun.  plus I just like autographing random cards and sending them in ...
Racism in america.  Everyone thinks its all good now that we have a minority president...well, sadly they would be wrong
American Cars pre 1980  While I will agree that modern american cars are pathetic, anything before the muscle car era cannot be overrated
Steven Colbert
Social Studies Education (thanks NCLB!)
Black History and the contributions of minorities and women to our great nation
non-traditional sports in the US like Cricket, Lacrosse, jai-alai, and curling! (curling Rocks...really!)

Video games aren't all overrated but sports are...all of them(except fencing that's just cool  8))

Amen, brother!  I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet you in 2005.  We had a REALLY fun game during booster draft.   :)

Haha yeah, and the baseball game too.  I don't have a clue anymore who was playing, but I had a blast.

I agree sports are a good thing it's just way too many people take them way to seriously

Meditation is under rated; I've been giving different methods of it a try lately.
I think the Bible is both overrated and under rated; it's too much of a "tool of argument" and less of a "means to wisdom/understanding". The Bible is taken too much at face value; I think we should spend more time investigating the more mythical and philosophical parts rather than just finding out the answer to something like "is drinking a sin?"

After reading recently that the average American watches 150 hours of television a month (about 5 hours a day), I was happy to not contribute to that statistic.

Of course, that's ignoring the hours per day I spend on the Internet.

colin, you are the most foolish person i know.
the bible shouldn't even be on an over rated or underated list.
when you say the bible is overrated or underrated, your basicly saying God himself is overrated or underrated, cause God is the author of The Holy Bible

Actually there's about 40 or so authors I believe. God was just involved in the process.

North Carolina basketball is also overrated, but not as much as UK
Dems more fightin' words :)

This quote was just hilarious to me.  #1 I think the Bible should be taken way more at face value, and #2 I think your perspective on the Bible is EXTREMELY biased based on what you WANT to be true, and the example you gave was an excellent case in point.  Very funny brother.

Weren't you the one who believes the Bible to be uncorruptable? That sounds more like believing what you want to be true.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal cheese."

I just corrupted the Bible.

You didn't corrupt the Bible.  You corrupted an internet message board.  I nor anyone else that has any intelligence would claim that an internet message board was authoritative, accurate, and inspired by God throughout all time :)

Yeah, I am going to agree with Prof on this one.  Honetly Colin, your argument makes you look foolish.  I beleive the word of God to be inspired by god (not authored by God) So God's word cannot be corrupted just like my words cannot be corrupted.  They can be misused and mistranslated or misunderstood but they are Gods words just as my words are my words, they cant be corrupted by you because as soon as you mess with them, they become your words filled with your intentions and your designs.

While you cant corrupt my words jsut like Gods words, God's words do differ in several very important ways. 1) they bring light, life and truth to humanity. 2) Gods word still exists as his word, despite the fact that he is using broken and fallible vehicles to tramnsmit his message.  Despite all the translations, interpretations, transliterations, miscommunications, etc.  I believe God to be actively involved in the process protecting and preserving his message to humanity.

Yes there have been additions and changes from the "original" word of God.  Just look at the differences in the Lords Prayer from the Catholic to the Protestant Faiths. But I believe these "mistakes" or 'corruptions" to remain faithful to Gods Word.  The Bible has been the most copied book in the world and in spite of this, it has the least amount of variance than any other copied manuscript.  we are even less sure of what the original writings are for some of Shakespeare's plays than we are about the word of God.  That should help reveal how important God's word is to Him.
