Title: Official Redemption Fantasy Baseball
Post by: Sean on February 13, 2009, 03:51:24 PM
I am in the process of making a fantasy league for this Redemption community.  If you would like to join, post here and I will send you password information to join.  I will be using Yahoo!

Note, there is a maximum of 12 and there has been more interest than I thought there would be so if you're interested it is first come first served.

I put your e-mail on the list for the invitation.  Let me know if you don't receive it by tomorrow and I'll try again.

Also, if you have people in your playgroup that do not frequent the boards that would like to play feel free to pass along the password to them, or send me their e-mail so I can send them an invite.

I signed up. but I tried to click into the league, and it said I am not apart of it. "Saruman's Orcs, League: Redemption Online Community" but if I click the Redemption Online Community, it says I'm not apart of it. that's redundant.

Actually, I'm not much of a baseball person anyways, so wk4c can take my spot.  (I was just in for the fantasy aspect, but I'm good to wait for the next football season... besides, harder classes may mean I won't have enough time for FanSports towards the end of this semester anyways.)

Go to the league page.

http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/77876 (http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/77876)

Under "League Notes" you will find the first bullet describes when to enter the draft.  15 minutes before the draft starts, a link will become available on the league page for you to enter the draft.

There are several green links to different pages at the top.  The first of these is "Baseball 09" then "League."  Underneath that row is another row of blue links.  The "Scoring and Settings" describes what you're looking for I think.

I'm pretty happy with my draft.  I had to do the pre-draft setup because I was at a Redemption District.  Plus, I didn't have long to set up the pre-draft because of a busy week.  Overall, I'm happy with my first Fantasy Baseball team.  I know Baseball well, but I don't know how the fantasy aspect works.  So this is going to be interesting and fun at the same time.  I really hate that I didn't get Pujols...he is a GREAT Christian and baseball player.  Apparently, I was 5th or 6th in the draft.  Ryan Howard will just have to fill the hole.
Title: Re: Official Redemption Fantasy Baseball
Post by: wk4c on March 22, 2009, 01:24:16 PM
I'm pretty happy with my draft as well.  Untill A-Rod comes back in I still have a power hitter at third with Mark DeRosa.

My starters atm are...

C - A.J. Pierzynski
1B - Mark Teixeira
2B - Dan Uggla
3B - Mark DeRosa
SS - Jhonny Peralta
OF - Ichiro Suzuki
OF - Bobby Abreu
OF - Corey Hart
Util - David Ortiz

And obviously A-Rod on the bench.  When A-Rod comes back, DeRosa is going to the outfield and I say see ya to Corey Hart.  But whoa, could you imagine having Dunn in that outfield in place of Suzuki along with DeRosa and Abreu? With A-Rod on 3rd! *drools*

You don't want Dunn in that outfield if you want to win. You already have a few guys who are similar to him, so he's a redundant.

Fantasy is all about stats.  Even if you've never heard of some people, you want them if them put up stats.

I personally like the style of fantasy that accumulates stats over the entire year rather than the head to head style.  If you like that style, it is available on yahoo as well as other providers.

Okay, can anybody help me out....Is Tejada on probation in general or probation from baseball?
I don't know whether to keep him (or keep him in the lineup ) or sub him out for a slightly less efficient SS.

Any Help?
Title: Re: Official Redemption Fantasy Baseball
Post by: Sean on March 27, 2009, 11:11:31 AM
It appears that his probation won't restrict his playing.
Title: Re: Official Redemption Fantasy Baseball
Post by: soul seeker on March 27, 2009, 11:31:58 AM
thanks Sean...that makes me feel better...I picked up a okay SS just in case.

*EDIT*  Actually, "okay" is relative to that I have never played a fantasy baseball team and I'm assuming they're okay.  I'm not sure how the points work until the season starts.  I know what scores but I don't know which category weighs heavier than others.  I tried to load up on stars.  Especially my pitching staff.
Title: Re: Official Redemption Fantasy Baseball
Post by: Sean on March 27, 2009, 11:59:12 AM
Each stat is "weighed" equally.  If you have the most HRs then you get 12 points.  If you have the second most HRs you 11 points.  Each category has this system so you take 12 and multiply it by the number of categories to determine the maximum number of points you could get.

An example would be I am 1st in HR and RBI but only 6th in Steals and Runs.  I would get 12 for HRs and RBI but only 6 for Steals and Runs so my total score would be 36.  Where as if somebody else was 3rd best in all 4 stats they would receive 10 points for each and be better than my 36 total points with their 40.
Title: Re: Official Redemption Fantasy Baseball
Post by: soul seeker on March 27, 2009, 12:03:11 PM
That sounds pretty good!
Hopefully, I will take 1st in Ks and some other stats my team is good in.  I doubt I will take 1st in homeruns though unless several of my guys have breakout years.

A common occurrence is that people will make trades in order to improve in certain categories.  You may find that you need to do that in the even that you are really low in one category and really high in another.

Okay, April is over.  Time to review how my drafted team has performed, although we already know it's cruddy.  Here's how my first nine picks fared:

1. Jimmy Rollins, .207
2. Prince Fielder, .234
3. CC Sabathia, traded for Jon Lester, 1-2  5.40
4. Brian Roberts, .356 8 2B
5. Geovany Soto, waived
6. Magglio Ordonez, waived
7. Ryan Zimmerman, traded for Brad Hawpe, waived
8. Ryan Ludwick, .297 5 HR
9. Ervin Santana, on DL so waived

I know there's five more months but that's just pathetic.   :-\

Title: Re: Official Redemption Fantasy Baseball
Post by: soul seeker on May 01, 2009, 05:16:42 PM
my batters are holding up..I think I'm close to top 6 in all offensive categories

pitching is another story:  I can't seem to find a good combination.  All my "headliners" are off to rocky starts.  Namely Oswalt who I dropped and Beckett is frustrating me too.  On another tangent, I partially wish they would count Zambrano for pitching and batting (he's doing pretty good).  I should have moved Santana higher up my draft wish list.  Oh well, hopefully these boys will pull me through in the long haul.

I don't know the stratagy of Fantasy stuff, but my pitcher's aren't doing much. I also was using Gomez instead of Kubal, and Kubal was on fire, and Gomez was dead for most of the early season. if only I followed baseball while school was still around...

Ouch!  Wolverines forgot to put A-Rod into the starting lineup.  He hit a 3-run homer in his first at-bat back from the DL.  Wow!

Of course, I'm pretty happy in my other league as I started A-Rod.   ;)

My team is doing good.  Kind of surprising because some of the guys I only drafted because I got their autograph at spring training this year.  Ethier, Kemp, and Loney.

7. Ryan Zimmerman, traded for Brad Hawpe, waived

Stamp, I can't thank you enough for that trade!  I was just looking for a decent 3rd basemen, not a 30 game hit streak monster!  He has far exceeded my expectations (decent hitter with a fair amount of HRs).  I know you are probably kicking yourself but who knew he was a diamond in the rough.

Now, if I can find some diamonds in pitching (i'm last in ERA and WHIP, pretty low on Ws).  I thought I had a good staff except they can't hold it together.  Oswalt started waaaaayyyyy too slow.  Becket is winning but is ERA is atrocious.  I'm shuffling pitchers just to find a rotation that will work.  Oh and Zambrano is hurt for a few weeks.  He was my K stud.

Whodathunk?!?!   :D

I'm glad Zimmerman is working out for you.  I have him in a couple of other leagues.  Believe it or not I just picked him up as a free agent in one league just two weeks ago!

Well, my team is scratchign and clawing its way back to respectability and up the standings.  Rollins and Fielder are starting to get back to normal form.  Aaron Hill is my team surprise.  I picked him up as a free agent early on.  I now have two of the best 2nd basemen: Hill and Brian Roberts.  One may be avilable for trading to someone in the near future.  it all depends on my current crop of outfielders.  Pena has been giving me a bunch of homers.  I'm tops in assists, although I have far too many errors.

How many of you manage your team on a daily basis?

I know I do.  I want to maximize the amount of points that I can potentially get.  It's the only way to catch first.  Plus, I LOVE baseball.

I manage daily as much as possible.

Being the O's fan that I am, I would be interested in B Rob.

I know there are some managers who check on their teams periodically.

For Moberly Saints/Bryan H and dynasty/bmc25yankee, I sent you both a trade proposal.

The fun result of having rotisserie points is that your daily +/- can be in indirect proportion to your teams performance.  One day my team batted over .400 with OBP over .450 with average pitching stats and I lost 1.5 points.  The next day I batted less than .250, had no wins or saves, but gained 2 points.   :D

Anyone know the board name for Moberly Saints/Bryan H?

The only Bryan H I know of is Hake.  However, he spells his name with an o, not an a.

If I Google "Moberly Saints" I get a lot of hits in Missouri.  Is this maybe a friend of The Prez?

Congrats to Sean for moving into first place!  (thanks to some of my former players  :D )

I have made the long comeback from <80 pts to >140, jumping back and forth between 3rd and 6th.

And the season is only about 40% over.   :o   Lots of great baseball to go!

Double postage.  (Allowed since I am STAMP.  ;) )

The first half is over.  I'm looking forward to watching the All-Star game with my two best friends.  Here is an analysis of my first year of fantasy baseball:

4 Yahoo leagues
Redemption Community - I drafted losers and by the end of April I was in second to plast place.  But after many shrewd moves, I have climbed to third place.  Sean and Janissary have some really good teams so i don't know if I can climb past them into 1st or 2nd.  But anything can happen in the second half.  Best player: Prince Fielder.  Biggest surprise: Kung Fu Panda, aka Pablo Sandoval.

Avalon Drive - This is a league for our neighborhood.  I started off middle of the pack but made a couple of trades and ascended to first by the end of April.  Been there ever since.  Best player: Ryan Braun.  Biggest surprise: Grady Sizemore.

Head-to-head public league - I would have been in first place but in the last game of the week on Sunday night, Ludwick hit two homers and had four RBIs that pushed me down to third.  We actually have a girl in this league.  And she is good!  Best player: Chase Utley.  Biggest surprise: Ben Zobrist.

Rotisserie public league - In first and dominating every category except AVG.  Funny thing is that all my teams have cruddy averages.  Best player: Zack Greinke.  Biggest surprise: Mark Reynolds.

2 MLB leagues
Head-to-head league #1 - I participated in the draft in this one.  You get either a win or loss for the week.  After three weeks I was 1-2 and hoping Mauer would come back soon.  I am now 12-2, best record in the league counting both divisions.  Best player: Joe Mauer.  Biggest surprise: Marco Scutaro.

Head-to-head league #2 - I autodrafted this league after setting up my pre-draft rankings.  I got crushed this past week but still have the best record in the league at 11-3.  Best player: Albert Pujols.  Biggest surprise: Michael Bourn.

OH YEAH!  Manny pinch grand slam last night on first pitch!!...and it was Manny bobblehead night to boot!!!

And just now Mark Beuhrle throws a PERFECT GAME!!  Another one of my teams has Beuhrle and Jonathan Sanchez who threw a no-hitter earlier.

STAMP, I think you are locked into 3rd unless something drastic happens. (injury, big trade, etc...)

Well I almost caught you two weeks ago.  I think my pitchers simply have to stop giving up hits and runs.

Injuries have hurt Janissary and Isengard Orcs, although the latter has Justin Upton back who is on a tear.

My jump into second has all been due to my pitchers actually starting to pitch.  I've improved in just about every one of my pitching categories.  Will it be enough?  Hard to say.  But I have had a ton of fun with this league!  I just wish some of the other managers actually managed their teams, (even though it helped me climb the standings in June and July  ;) ).

Friends in the league,
I have posted a message on the league page concerning next season's scoring options.  Please share your opinions on my planned changes.

As for the league standings, I was was surprised at the 5 point jump STAMP had a few days ago.  I am glad though that the standings have settled back to where they belong...with me in first.  Looking like a good race for 1st this year.  Who's pitchers will get more wins?  I think that may be the stat that determines whether STAMP or myself get first place.

LOL, the only reason I'm making you work for it is that my pitchers finally started to pitch.  Of course, Wolf and Kershaw are all of sudden injured.   :o

(Hmmm...guess I'll have to go look at the scoring options.  I'm guessing you're throwing out the ones you scored low in?    )

Well it was certainly an interesting last two weeks of the fantasy baseball season.  My pitching had finally turned around in September and with a little more than a week to go I was in first place with an eight point lead on Sean.  I thought I had it wrapped up at that point.  Then my pitching fell off the deep end!  No more wins so Sean passed me up.  No more saves so Awesome Ninjas passed me up in saves and K's.  And someone passed me in ERA.  After 4 days of that, Sean and I were tied for first.  I figured my only chance at that point was for Wolf, Hanson and Kershaw to have good games.  They did from a strikeout standpoint but none of them won.  I did regain the lead but was worried going into the final weekend.  I decided to pick up every available Minnesota and Detroit relief pitcher in hopes of picking up two points with holds.  I also sat my entire batting lineup on Sunday so as not to lose any ground in AVG and OBP.  In the end I lucked out.  I still think Sean has the better team.  I had to make a lot of free agent moves to beat him...and just barely.

Congratulations to everyone!  I haven't had this much fun during the baseball season since I was in 5th grade.  We did fantasy baseball on paper in 1975!!  I still remember the starting players on my team:

1B Rod Carew
2B Jorge Orta
3B Toby Harrah
SS Bert Campaneris
OF Joe Rudi
OF Mickey Rivers
OF Jeff Burroughs
DH Tony Oliva
SP Bert Blyleven
SP Vida Blue
SP Ken Holzman
SP Nolan Ryan
SP Ferguson Jenkins
