The only thing I can think of is that your Inbox has gotten enough messages that there's a second page with a new one you haven't read. I don't know if you've checked that already or not, just the first suggestion that came to mind.

This is an issue that I've seen happen and it appears to be a technical glitch/bug in the forum software. The number usually resets itself eventually, sometimes after the next time you get a new message.

Agreed...I had this happen for awhile as well.
