Post by: hi123 on December 04, 2009, 09:36:37 PM
Have you been in national tournaments? If so what was it like , how many people were there, and what place did you come in

My first (and only) Nationals was CA WOOT! and there were 85 people.  I tied for 3rd in T1 2player and got 1st in Ironman.

It was a great experience and if you ever have the chance to go, do.

My first and only nationals was the same as Cameron's, California 2009. I got first place in Multi player, second place in teams with my friend Connor Gressit, and 1st place in Type NW. It was a lot of fun. I also got my butt kicked by Gabe in Type I Two Player.  ;D

The year that nationals was in Minnesota, I couldn't go because my Dad was making me do work. If Nationals ended up being in Minnesota or Iowa this year, I would be able to go, which would be awesome.

Wow I dont think I will ever be able to come in first, or even tied for third out of 85 players(unless I use garden tomb)

Here is the Nats description of Ironman.
Quote
Seeker of Souls (IronMan):
Entry Fee =   $5.00

Participants register on Wednesday or Thursday and receive an identifying Lanyard Badge(and 10 Chip Cards) They wear (display) this badge whenever they are available to challenge or be challenged by any other badged participant. They engage in a regular Type-1 Two-player game. The winner receives a CHIP CARD matching the defeated players badge. The winner may not accept any chip card that does not match the defeated players badge (for example: any card he may have won from another player.) You can only play any participant once(no rematches). If a player has run out of Chip Cards to lose he can no longer play any matches because he has no chips left to risk. Matches CAN ONLY happen outside of scheduled tournament play. During the lunch break on Saturday ALL participants will turn in all collected chip cards. The winner is the participant with the most collected unique Chip Cards. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony. Winner will receive a Trophy and Redemption Product.

Cameron,

Sounds very interesting.  I hope to be able to make it to Nationals this year...depends on where it is I guess.  Hopefully I could participate in this endeavor.  Also, what is the "Redemption Product" that you win?  I'm sure it changes every year.  What did you win?

Cool.  I can't wait to find out.  I think if I go, even when/if i went I would lose, but it would still be fun to experience it.

Sad things is I think he was being serious...if that was a joke then that was pretty funny.
But My first nationals I went to was in New York  and I got third in type 2 2 player and second in type 2 multiplayer and seventh? in booster. Next year was at Kansas and I got third in booster and second in type 2 multiplayer for RNRS. Mixed the next year then this past year on the West Coast I got second in type 2 2 player and fourth in booster draft, missed third by a point, and second or third in RNRS for booster. You can see what I specialize in...

If you know that you constantly "gripe and complain" about it, why do you still do it?

The only Natz I've been to was the previous one in CA.  Out of eight rounds of T1-2p, I lost five (two from time out (which I knew my deck would time out a lot)), tide once (against Ken (and he had a deck that went against my entire build so it was interesting) and won twice (first against a RLK that couldn't get to my sites and Judges seat kept wipping his defense out (he got frustrated because I was waiting to clear his defense before going in (which was the point of my deck (hence the expectation of timing out a lot))) and the second win was against a roman deck (which they destroyed my Stronghold In The Dessert and Judges Seat so it was an interesting game on my part)).

For booster draft, I only drafted the two heroes in the tin I got (the two Luke heroes) but also drafted a great defense.  I never expected to win booster (for obvious reasons) so I just enjoyed the games I played and was surprised that I always rescued at least two lost souls.

I have attended three nationals- 2005 in Minnesota, 2006 in New York, and 2007 in Missouri. 2005 was probably one of the best experiences ever (seeing as how we had Tim Maly, Josh i-forget-his-last-name-tim's-friend, Ben and Isaac Haugen, and Chelsey all staying at our house for the weekend). haha I can still picture us all sitting on the cold kitchen floor after playing some intense DDR and Tim was still going...good times. Anyway, for anyone who hasn't been to one, the tournaments are immensely fun as they are so incredibly large and every game is bound to be different. I suppose this is true for all tournaments, but you get way more of a variety of deck types to play against with people from different regions. Also, because of attending national tournaments, I could say at a young age that I had friends from all over the US. The atmosphere of nationals can really only be described as a true family reunion that you actually look forward to attending. :)

I've been to 4. MN 2005 (BIGGEST ONE YET!!!) NY 2006, MO 2007 and OH! 2008. CA was a little bit of a stretch.
in MN, it was my second year of attending tournaments and I did fairly well, I went over 500, so I was happy. NY I wish I would have done better, but I don't think I did too bad. MO I did good in T2 Multi (5th place, but last round I was at a table with Tyler, Justin and Eric, so I was happy), OH! I did horrible. I had an awesome Booster deck, but it failed like Booster Draft can do, my T1 somehow got twisted draws and bad luck. I had to play DaClock first round and I didn't draw one FBTN hero. that also happened in the second game, and the third game I got an easy pairing being so low. third I played Rob's youngest daughter (I think...)with a new deck I was trying out. it failed. fourth I got another VERY easy pairing and I walked through, fifth I did that again, sixth I had an awesome time with Isildur forcing a 4-4 tie even though I could have won...  :-* seventh I had another easy one. eighth I played a site deck with my site deck... but mine was a Zebby deck, so... ninth I don't remember, but I won, and last I played Chris McCravy, who I lost to 3 out of 3 times we met that week (once was on RTS though, but we also played in Booster?)

haha Lord Stryfe and his friend... too bad he's quitting redemption... but YOU wouldn't listen to me and play SoG and NJ at the same time so we could tie 6-6 like they did.
