Title: Musicians Census
Post by: Minister Polarius on October 07, 2009, 06:52:53 PM
I've noticed lately that there seems to be an oddly high percentage of Redemption players who are musicians. Who else here is a musician and what is your main instrument? Drummers can count for the sake of this poll ;)

My main instrument is guitar.

I play guitar, but I wouldn't consider myself a musician.  I have not played any where near enough....

Piano is my primary instrument, though I haven't practiced in a while.  Second is French horn, and there's a couple other things after that.

Pol discovered last summer that I play the keyboard, and he had a look on his face like in Back to the Future when Marty was saying to his dad, "get out of town, I didn't know you did anything creative!"

I play piano for my church.  I also play guitar, a little.  I have yet to master a single bar chord.

Should those of us who are musically challenged respond to this thread so that an accurate percentage can be figured, or should we just stay out?

Guitar for me.  I got to play bass for the first time a couple of weeks ago when out bassist decided not to show up for Sunday morning worship.  it was fun!

I also play trumpet but I dont get to lead worship so much with that one because it can be difficult to sing and play trumpet at the same time.

Clarinet was my major instrument in college. I can play that, sax, some piano (enough for a few choruses and for my elementary classes), and I sing. Oh, and the recorder-not just "Hot Cross Buns" (which my 3rd graders learn), but a Handel Sonata for (Alto) Recorder.

You can add my son Robert (music ed. student at Philadelphia Biblical University), who plays clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, sax, tuba, piano, and several other instruments. Plus he was drum major of his marching band. And he once finished 4th at Nationals.

And my younger son Jonathan is a HS tuba player.

And my daughter Stefanie, who is just learning Redemption, plays string bass.

(My wife is a middle school orchestra director and violist, but doesn't play much Redemption.)

I also play trumpet, and do get to play sometimes at church, since our worship band is actually a brass band most evenings :)

I have also played percussion in concert before, and mess around a bit on piano just for fun.

I can play Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee on the piano and steel drums.  That's probably as far as my musical talents could ever reach.

I never learned an instrument, probably because I never had the patience: My dad always tried to get good deals by giving me private lessons by like his friends who knew how to play the instrument, which I didn't want. :P If I had been learning an instrument of my choosing in a group, I might have learned to play two or three, but as is, I'll join the non-musical percentage.

I've played the Clarinet, bass clarinet, B flat contra-bass clarinet.  Right now, I'm practicing my clarinet every now and then so when I finally get my braces off, I can join the worship team (haven't practice in a while due to appointments being three weeks apart and having to wait a bit after each one for the pain to go away (but hopefully that means that they're coming off soon ;D)).

As for piano, I can play some songs I know on the clarinet (though, it's one note at a time instead of chords) and I can play Awesome God (with chords).

You should try it.  Probably not in a worship setting, but singing through your instrument while playing is a common extended technique.  I could sort of do it with my French horn, but I could only really pull it off in the lower registers.
