who do you think was the best rock band ever?
What is the best song ever?
best guitarist?
best drummer?
greatest solo artist?
pick an era 50's/60's/70's/80's/90's/present

Best Rock band ever = The Beatles.
-
Buckethead is probably my favorite solo artist. Metal, funk, and progressive styles mixed together is pure wyn.
And I don't know a whole lot of guitarists, but Randy Rhoads certainly had great skills and style. Oh, and John Petrucci is especially awesome as well.

-
Dylan had a band, innit?
-
Dylan had a band, innit?
Yes, but he didn't write with a band, ergo solo artist.
-
who do you think was the best rock band ever? Eagles
What is the best song ever? Stairway to Heaven
best guitarist? Eddie Van Halen
best drummer? John Bonham
greatest solo artist? Roy Orbison

I'm going to add some more categories:
Best punk band?
I'm going to go with The Clash.
Best rapper?
Jay Z
Best singer?
Jeff Buckley
Best pianist?
Ben Folds
Best country artist?
Johnny Cash (though Robert Plant and Allison Krauss are great).
Greatest rock album?
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club.

Who do you think was the best rock band ever?
It's really hard to decide, as most rock bands are phenomenal in their own right. Among the best are: Kansas, Dream Theater, Petra.
What is the best song ever?
Again, so hard to decide. My personal favorite is Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas.
Best guitarist?
Phil Keaggy, Eddie Van Halen, and Jimi Hendrix. On a personal note, I don't like Jimi Hendrix at all, but he's heavily regarded as one of the best.
Best drummer?
Neal Peart and Mike Portnoy. Although Duncan Phillips of the Newsboys is no slouch.
Greatest solo artist?
Steven Curtis Chapman.
Pick an era 50's/60's/70's/80's/90's/present:
Definitely the 80's.
New categories:
Best punk band?
I'm not really into punk, but MxPx is heavily regarded as one of the best. I do like Relient K.
Best rapper?
John Reuben.
Best singer?
Steve Perry of Journey.
Best pianist?
Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater.
Best country singer?
Again, I'm not really into country. But I do like Alan Jackson as a singer.
Greatest rock album?
Wow. So many to choose. Rush's 2112 definitely comes to mind, as does Leftoverture by Kansas. Comatose by Skillet is among the best, as is Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence by Dream Theater.
-

I'd have to disagree with this statement. The Sex Pistols, the Ramones, and the Clash are usually considered the three best punk bands by critics.
-
New categories, eh?
Best punk band? If The Clash is punk then I can agree with this one.
Best rapper? zzzzzzzzzzz
Best singer? Mariah Carey (There are so many good singers from my favorite genre of classic rock, but Mariah's vocal range is hands down the best ever.)
Best pianist? zzzzzzzzzzz
Best country artist? Dolly Parton
Greatest rock album? Boston (Their first album is amazing. Bradley Delp's vocals are out of this world. What's truly amazing about this album is that not only is there hit after hit on this album, but every song fits together in a complete package. Not a greatest hits album, but better.)
-
Best pianist?
Sergei Rachmaninoff. I listen to his works for hours at a time. Its a really tough call though. So many great classical composers that defined piano playing, such as Mozart, Chopin, that make it a difficult decision. Evegeny Kissin is a great modern classical composer and pianist that is phenomenal.

Ya know, after "christian" bands, I prefere classical, video game, and movie sound tracks. Not really into rock. I play violin so that pretty much solves it.

Oh yeah, I forgot we were going outside of the confines of rock. Chopin is amazing.
-
Well, I chose the pianist for Dream Theater because he is a phenominal pianist, attending Julliard at the tender age of nine. But if we're including classical musicians, then Liszt, Brahms, and Chopin are three of the best.
-
[Roll over] Beethoven's not bad. ;)
-
Wow, I am surpriesed no one has mentioned Steve Vai for best guitarist yet. But my personal favorite is Stevie Ray Vaughan. Although I do also like Jimi hendrix, Eddied Van Halen, Eric Clapton and Phil keagy as well.
-
Eddied Van Halen is definitely my favorite... ::)

who do you think was the best Progressive Metal band and best band ever? Dream Theater
What is the best song ever? I'm torn.... Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, A Change of Seasons, A Nightmare to Remember, The Best of Times, and The Count of Tuscany are all equally good in my opinion.
best guitarist? John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Michaelangelo Batio (quad guitar ftw)
best drummer? Mike Portnoy. (You spell his name wrong Caleb. >.< )
greatest solo artist? Hmmm.... Not sure on this one.
pick an era 90's/present
-
who do you think was the best rock band ever?the Beatles, Queen
What is the best song ever? Bohemian Rhapsody or Bohemian Polka
greatest solo artist? Weird Al Yankovic
Best Classical Composer? G.F. Handel, Bach
Best Classical Composition? Water Music Suite, Mvt 11
Best pianist? Billy Joel, there are some others I saw on PBS once, can't remember their names
-
greatest solo artist? Weird Al Yankovic
Haha, he doesn't write his own songs. He doesn't count as a solo artist.
-
>:( he does count!
-
greatest solo artist? Weird Al Yankovic
Haha, he doesn't write his own songs. He doesn't count as a solo artist.
He writes all of his own songs. Half the songs on his albums are originals, and all the parody lryics are written by him.
-
But he's a mockery of music. ::)
-
He's more talented than the original songwriter because he made a different song that has a story or somethinig fit in the same music.
-
Wait... you're saying that he is more talented that Billy Joel? And the Beatles? And anyone else who he's ever copied? Just for the sole reason THAT he copied? :-\
-
It's hard enough to write quality original lyrics/msuic. It's even harder to fit your lyrics that make sesne into someone else's music.
-
I don't agree with that, but okay. But that means that you are defining "music" as "lyrics." These are NOT the same. He only fits in stupid lyrics, the other artists find (imo) better lyrics and write the music. In my opinion, that makes them a better artist.
-
He's more talented than the original songwriter because he made a different song that has a story or somethinig fit in the same music.
Bolded the emphasis from a previous post. Clearly he is not a better writer of music. He doesn't write any.
-
But why do you find his stories in his songs better than the original? Why is "the saga begins" more clever than "American Pie." Why is "spiderman" more clever than "piano man?" I think that Piano man is an AMAZING song, and his is funny, but not that clever.
-
It has nothing to do with cleverness, although his songs are clever, and everything to do with originality and creativity.
-
Okay, I thought clever meant = original and creative. That's the definition I was using. But I think there are some awesome creative lyrics and original songs that he paradies and almost ruins for me. I'm not sure he's "more original" just because he changes a song.
-
Clever is more along the lines of cute cunny sort of stuff, puns, etc. For example, White and Nerdy is a clever song because Chamillionaire is the complete opposite of sterotypical white and nerdy.
I find his parodies to be extremely creative. If you can write a song into a song that already exists, let me know, because I'd like to know. And this is beside the fact that he is clearly a competent musician to be able to play these songs, as well as a competent singer to be able to sing within pitch and such for the varying styles and rap etc.
-
I think he actually has an aweful voice. I think in a lot of songs he is out of pitch, and I just hate the sound of his voice.
-

Actually, this is utterly incorrect. As I've already stated, "Weird Al" writes his own music. Half of the songs on every album he has ever made are original songs.
But the fact remains that "Weird Al" Yankovic is a musical genius. This is undeniable. He can not only write original parodies of the original song, but he can also reproduce the style of a particular artist (all the subtle nuances and everything). He is a musicologist.
Give him credit where it's due. The man is a musical genius.
-
True. My fault for misrepresenting there. However, I think he's at his best in parodies.
-
Musical genius... Now I'm just gonna have to walk away... ::)
