Title: Mainly for Playtesters.....
Post by: CJSports on May 03, 2011, 08:01:05 PM
Why was Thaddeus given the ability he was, what kind of biblical reference did he have that he protected everything possible from evil people.

There's almost no information about Thaddeus whatsoever. The reason his ability is OP is because he was edited in the final round of playtesting and none of the playesters saw that he was horribly OP. The reason for what his SA does may have to do with the fact that Thaddeus is probably the same person as Jude, who is known as the Patron Saint of Lost Causes. The SA is appropriate in that if Disciples hasn't won by the time you get all 9-11 of them out, you're going to need him to win.

Every year we need to make a card that people will complain vociferously about. That trend has been going on since the release of Priests, when Urim and Thummim was going to destroy the element of surprise in the game. In FoOF we had Z's Temple, which was going to destroy the game because it made an invincible offense possible. In RoA we had The Garden Tomb, which was going to destroy the game because it made an unblockable offense possible. In TexP, we made Mayhem, which made winning by the person who didn't draw it on their first turn almost impossible. And in Disciples we made Thaddeus, who basically makes everything on defense impossible. Next year we're making [Edited by ROSES] which will counter pretty much every OP'd card made in the game in the past 5 years, but to such an extent that it will probably be complained about more than all those other cards combined*.

So why do we do this you ask? Well, it's because we like to get people excited about the counters to the OP'd cards that will come out eventually. How exicted were you the first time you saw Golgotha? "Finally", you said, "a hard counter to TGT!". So you went out and bought dozens of Disciples packs until you finally got a Golgotha, and you were at peace the next time you saw your opponent's TGT. So really, it's all a ploy. We make OP'd cards in one set so we can make counters in the next, so that you'll have a reason to need to buy the next set. It's ingenious really. Just remember that of all of the cards we have made that were going to destroy the game, the game lives on**.

To be fair, U&T never got counters, Priests just got less popular.

U&T caused a number of evil characters in RoA to be printed with the ability to target deactivated artifacts.

Actually, cards that protect your hand from opponent's cards from the Di set (Simon the Zealot is one...are their others?) also counter U&T. But I do agree that the waning popularity of Priests is the main reason it's not used as much anymore.

The reason priests are being used less and less is that they got very minimal help from the last three sets.

Holy Unto the Lord, Jehoida's Strength, Ezra's Journey, Burning Incense are all possible BW that are not discards.

This is similar to how computers programs work. Yes I will leave my program slightly broken in an annoying and unavoidable way then I will release an updated version that fixes this problem, but breaks something else. It keeps you buying my products so I don't become poor. If I release one perfect program no one ever has to buy anything from me again.*

*This statement, although smart business practice, is also false
