So I'm gonna buy an Ipod touch. Any suggestions for which one to get, any deals that certain stores have?
-
The best retail option is MacMall, but their only CA locations are Torrance and Santa Monica. You can try Fry's, but their prices and inventory are hit-and-miss.
Online, Amazon is the most reliable low-priced option.

Buy a Zune they are pretty nice. Btw how much are you looking to spend?

I must disagree with Isildur, there is no device on the market like the Touch.
If you have one, I would definitely try Costco. Their electronic prices (and their amazing extra warrenty coverage) is amazing. You can skip AppleCare with Costco; they replace things so easily...

for apps yes the ipod does win. But if your looking for more gigs for your dollar and a super sleek device that has a far better interface for music then the ipod. Then maybe just maybe the Zune might be ok too.
-
While I agree the Zune is a great device (if the iPod touch wasn't out I would use it or an Archos), but the apps makes up for anything the Zune has.
-
that is the only redeeming thing about the ipod, the app store. otherwise, archos all the way (i have both, btw).
-
D'oh! Totally forgot about Costco. Buy there.
As for which device is best, it depend on what features matters to you.
- Zune pwns in audio quality, music subscriptions, radio, and price, and plays nice with PCs.
- iPod has all the iTunes store offers, the 'Apple experience', multitouch, and is a pretty good gaming device.
- Archos has better storage options, 802-11N, much bigger size (which may be good or bad), and works w/ Flash.
I wanted a pocketable device that would give me apps. I went with iPod - audio quality isn't a big deal to me, as I'm only a casual listener when I'm out in the wild.
-
Audio quality is very very close to 99.9% of people. The lowest common denominator is the music's bit rate unless you go lossless or really really high. Don't worry about it.
-
Cnet did a man-on-the street/Pepsi Challenge type of survey and found that 80% prefer the Zune audio when using quality earphones. That's what I was refering to.
On the stock headphones, however (how non-audiophiles listen), I personally can't tell much of a difference, but a buddy swears the Zune is still much much cleaner, even with junky MP3s. Whatever makes you happy...
-
Hm... so how much cheaper is a Zune? I do like apps and stuff, but if I can get more gigs and save a bunch of money, I can go with the Zune.

$200 gets you a 16 Gig Zune
The Same $200 gets you a 8 Gig Ipod
About $280 Gets you a 32 Gig Zune (You can find it for like $250 or so if you look online)
Or for about $300 you can get a 32 Gig Ipod.
So it really just depends on how much Cash you want to spend. I have no clue what the price ranges are for a arcoss (Or what ever that thing is) though.
-
Oh that's not cheap enough. I'll go with an ipod. Also, I was looking at Costco prices and they're about 15$ more expensive than WalMart or Best Buy... so I don't think I"ll get it at Costco.
-
You serious? I have never seen Costco outsold, especially to Best Buy. Good choice on the Touch though.

Yeah. Look online at prices. Yeah I gotta have my paper toss. ;)

Costco can't advertise Apple products at less than a certain % off retail. Their iPod prices aren't even listed online, so I'm not sure what you were looking at. Cameron is right, there is no chance that Best Buy would sell something less than Costco -- I've never seen Best Buy sell anything much below retail, much less at the best price.
Amazon: $184/$270/$357
MacMall: $184/$270/$357
Walmart: $184/$270/$358
Best Buy: $189/$275/$365
Apple Store: $199/$299/$399

just get an ipad.

lol oh you ::)

While I prefer my computers to be PCs... I have been looking at an ipod touch for a while now as well. I have one question about the app store... do you have to buy every app, or do they make free ones as well?
-
There are quite a few free apps and I'd say 80% of the paid apps are $.99. It's a good deal and there is a lot of fun stuff on there.
-
Yeah, my current 30gb 3rd gen ipod is starting to die on me I think... so I may wanna upgrade soon. The wifi abilities are the biggest selling point for me. It's basicly an iPhone without the contract.
-
I'd guess about 40,000 of the 140,000 apps are free. Some apps require internet access, but most at least have an offline mode.

If you have Skype credit, a constant wifi connection, and headphones w/ a mic, you have a phone. ;)
