Title: HURRICAAAAAAAAAAAANE!
Post by: Lamborghini_diablo on August 25, 2011, 07:59:11 PM
Just to match my other thread title.  :P

All you fellow east coasters ready for the east coast apocalypse? First we get an earthquake, then the hurricane! What's next,  a tsunami? Sheesh.

That's why I moved to Florida.... to get away from the hurricane-prone northeast....  :o

We don't get hurricanes much out here though Kittens. Lucky for you however when that hurricane is gone thats it. When a blizzards over? Theres still 12 feet of snow to take care of.

I'd also like to point out that you are not FROM Rochester, you go to school here, and you've only had to survive one, fairly mild WNY winter.

Say that to flooded roads and houses. It takes at least a day for our road to stop being a river after hurricanes.

9 months of the year isn't good enough for you?  I've also survived 19 (some fairly wild) Central NY winters.

It takes at least a week for all that snow to melt, and as its melting my whole town is a river.

Lake. Effect. Snow. You don't get that in Oneonta, or at least when it gets to you its already done. And considering you were on a cruise ship for some of the worst of the winter....

You want weird weather, move to Texas. The only state where you can experience all 4 seasons in one day. You wake up to it snowing(winter), lunchtime-its breezy with leaves falling(fall), around 3pm the sun is blazing in the sky(summer) and when you settle down in the night, you notice that its raining(spring). Ain't Texas weather great!

There's a nice interactive tracker to help predict how hard you'll get hit.

I don't remember the last time we've had a snow day. We had a shut down due to extreme cold...

How cold? In MT it can get -20 and it's still a school day (not joking)

I didn't think there were any schools in MT...I thought the whole state was just one huge National Park that people just hung out in sometimes... ;)

If by National Park, you mean the most beautiful & relaxing place to live in the continental US, then you would be right!

Hmm... 2 weeks without electricity, downed trees everywhere... in the middle of a heat wave. No thanks, I'll pass this year.  '05 was bad enough.  After a direct hit by a Cat 3 or 4 of course, not a 2.   Enjoy the unusual while you can. ;)

-23 caused a delay this last January. I'll keep looking though.

Two years ago we had a -40 windchill (-20 something without it) and there was still school, not even a delay. My district isn't big on delays.

I knew -40 was in my head for a reason!  I'm pretty sure our school was cancelled. Of course, I didn't have school at the time anyway...

The last time I had a snow day was 2nd grade and it wasn't even an official. The water main froze and exploded or something and flooded some of the school and the playground.

Well, I survived. We had some MAJOR property damage though, just look at this!

Spoiler (hover to show)

My parents and I drove around a bit to see what happened in the surrounding areas, pictures below (images linked to not eat up page space)

A flooded road (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/2.jpg)
Uprooted tree right next to our yard (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/3.jpg)
That slide looks fun now! (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/4.jpg)
I think this gazebo was lifted, and floated over. (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/5.jpg)
Apparently this guy really wanted some coffee in the morning (Not joking) (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/6.jpg)
Welcome, and enjoy the water! (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/7.jpg)
Same flooded car, but from the other side of the road (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/8.jpg)
This tree was in a very unfortunate position. It blocked people from escaping the flood waters. (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/9.jpg)
A nearby lake, it normally has falling water, but not THIS much (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/10.jpg)
You know how tall a speed limit sign is. (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/11.jpg)
Stop ahead? I think I'd rather stop NOW! (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/12.jpg)
Another tree that fell next to my place. That thing was an eyesore. It will not be missed. (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/13.jpg)
Two more trees that fell outside of our property (http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z18/Lambo_Diablo_Svtt/Hurricane/14.jpg)

I guess I never did tell my story on here, mixed this forum up with another one.

The hurricane was dreadfully boring until 9 PM. Then, the power goes out, and minutes later a family members calls warning us of a tornado heading our direction. We hide in the basement for 45 minutes until the nasty arm of the hurricane passed. Still on edge from the tornado warning, I went to bed fully dressed with a flashlight, pocket knife, headlamp, phone, and jacket ready for another tornado. I never fell asleep until 4 AM, then woke up at 8. We still had no power, so my parents and I drove around to take pictures. Around 3 PM the sun came out, and an hour later the power came back on. Except for the threat of a tornado, it was pretty uneventful for me.
