How is Remeption these days?

Hello everyone! It has been a good 7 years sense I was an active Redemption player and message board user. I have seen a ton of familiar names just from the topics on the board. Lots of great memories playing Redemption. So how is the game these days. The last expansion I remember is the Angel Wars.

It's changed a LOT since AW, lol. 3 or 4 major meta shifts.

People have given up on trying new strategies beings they realize they're always going to be 3 or 4 steps behind me.

The short version is, Priests changed a lot of fundamental strategies for the game, and the expansions since then have changed a lot of fundamental strategies for Priests.  So there's been at least two generations of development since Angel Wars.

-almost all cards are useful now in each set.
-there was custom heroes at nats tourney legal
-patriarchs, apostles  are readily available due to TXP packs

The short version is, Priests changed a lot of fundamental strategies for the game, and the expansions since then have changed a lot of fundamental strategies for Priests.  So there's been at least two generations of development since Angel Wars.
The long version:

Priests began the vast change, with the introduction of themes sorted by brigades, as well as many protect abilities. It really didn't change anything too much, but it was the beginning.

Faith of our Fathers made you play a theme deck if you wanted to win. Zerubabel's Temple reigned supreme with protection from everything. Autoblock became popular on defense, using characters like Uzzah and Trembling Demon (with Holy of Holies) to protect lost souls from rescue before the hero could do anything. There were also strategy decks, such as the hand discard deck that won nationals. Deck discard had been tried a number of times, but failed mostly.

Rock of Ages solidified theme/strategy decks. Pre-block ignore ran rampant with The Garden Tomb, and there was nothing you could do about it.

TexP didn't change much, but Territory Class allowed you to do sneaky things to your opponent. Image of Jealousy and Destructive Sin attempted to stop TGT, but it didn't really work...

Disciples killed preblock ignore. Instead abilities came to the forefront, with Herod's Temple frustrating many players. Disciples are currently the popular meta, using speed and Thaddeus' protection.

Okay, so that was semi-long.

I'd get a few TxP and Di packs, then take a look at where you want to go with that.

Any of your current decks probably won't win a tournament.

Maybe a local... We had someone come to one of our tournaments last year with a fight-by-the-numbers deck that hadn't been touched since before Kings, and he won type 1 2-player! It was pretty funny. :)

Well, true.  I once held a local that was won by an unmodified starter deck.

Also: Bluefrog, you may want to wait until the new set comes out.  Supposedly Red and OT are going to be good or something.

The new set would also be easier to formulate new decks on, too, as each tin will have a nice theme set to work from (for offense and defense).

Old school FBTN is legit. I played it last year at nationals, at least for part of the time.

If you have no cards, then how are you going to have a deck together in time?  Wouldn't it take time to get a deck bought, mailed, and assembled?

To answer your question...
Set Aside Drawing and pre-block ignore are main offensive strategies.  This can be accomplished through...
The "new" brigade: Teal   Feasts and their auto wins.
White   The Garden Tomb girls with their powerful enhancements
Purple   The new Disciples and their fishing boat
Clearly, these are quick summaries, but if you look in deck concepts and completed decks sections of the boards, then you will find examples of what I am talking about.

Auto block and EC recursion are typical defensive strategies:
Auto-blocks include Uzzah & Trembling Demon (from the "new" orange brigade)
Philistines are still dominant with Philistine Outpost; though Nazareth slows them down.
Pharisees are gaining popularity with their drawing and play first.
Herods have seen some success with their blocking and capturing.
Again, check the deck concepts area to get a more in depth look at the strategies.

If that is the case, then "Tins" are your best bet.  There are certain Tins that are better than others if you have a choice.

Depending on the prices, feel free to compare them with Three Lions Gaming, since a lot of Christian stores in our area that still have Redemption (not many do) charge more than retail. Then the shipping cost is worthwhile. :) And we have all the tins so you can choose which one you want.

Oh yeah, I used to love ordering from 3LG back when I used to play. On a scale of 1 - 10, 1 being clobbered 10 hold my own, how would I do if I managed to buy some boosters, grab an NJ, and some other staples. I know its a hard call, I am more worried about the new theme decks then anything, considering i know nothing about them in an actual game.

Honestly, I don't know your meta or who will be at the tournament.  If you were in my area, then I would put it on a 2 or 3.  The new cards are that powerful, especially when they work together.  If you still want to take that route, then I suggest newer "boosters" like TeP or Disciples.  If those are not available, then Priests packs are your next best bet since that was the set that introduced the new brigades of Teal and Orange (therefore they contain a LOT of the same colors and could build a workable deck quickly).  I would not go older than those sets.  Additionally, I suggested Tins because they build up a deck quickly and efficiently.  I was trying to help you save money while having a decent deck.

I hope you don't find my advice discouraging, but like it was mentioned early...the last 5 sets have adjusted the game that much.  It is a whole new (and in my opinion) exciting game than it was since Angel Wars (which is when I first started).

I suggest you buying a G/H starter deck and Tin XIX. You'll spend 25 dollars and get a decent deck out of it. From there, I recommend Disciples.

That sounds like good advice. :) Let's change the price tag, though. If you decide you want to do that, you can order the starter deck and tin at Three Lions Gaming, and I'll include 2 Disciples packs to help you out with your deck! Just leave a note with your order so that I remember to include them for you. ;)

Not that this involves me (and assuming Tin 19 is TGT), then you should exchange one Disciples for TeP so he has a CHANCE at getting Susanna.  Then again, it doesn't involve me.   8)

The above two posts are good advice for a decent tourney deck.

Ken, you are a generous guy.  Bluefrog, I think this is a very worthy deal to get you up and running for a decent showing at the upcoming tournament.  A very workable, competitive deck for $25 (not counting the Doms) is hard to be beat by anyone.  (Also, the Tins include Packs if you like to open those as well).

Bluefrog,

Check out Texas tournaments on the official tournament page. Marcus and Ben usually have cards at the tour that they are willing to trade with you. Also Terry has some cards as well. There are a average of 8-10 players that meet at Life Church. Look forward to seeing you there.  Welcome Back!

You guys rock! Thanks so much for the advice, I cannot wait to play again. And, thanks a ton Ken, you have definitely regained me as a customer for all my Redemption needs :). Does Mike still play in the Texas group(cant remember his last name)? I remember way back when, I think maybe 03 south central regional he let me stay at his house because it was an overnighter and I was just a young tike with no license or car. I remember Marcus, Terry, and Ben though, those guys rock.

edit: just submitted my order on 3LG, so pumped

Kittens! Haha, you go to RWC? I am originally from upstate NY, more specifically Leroy/N Chili area. I used to live on Sunnyside Ln off of Westside Dr and Union, My Mom graduated from there and my dad used to work there. I also have several childhood friends who go to RWC. Good stuff.

Hey, Bluefrog!  Can't wait to introduce you to some new guys in our playgroup.  Marcus Parker, his sister Neeka, Ben Shadrick, Jordan Drott, Chad Soderstrom, and Buddy Dunn and myself (Terry, thanks for the compliment) are still very active.  We now play in Dallas at The Life Church (at the northwest corner of Hillcrest and Alpha Road.
