Pending a routine physical, Brett Favre is now a Minnesota Viking ;D
-
Wow, I am stunned don't people actually retire anymore?
-
Not this person... :P
-
He's in pads at practice now! Press conference at 6!
-
Wow... I thought he made the official decision NOT to play...
-
wow, ridiculous. He is dragging his great legacy through the mud. I think he is just playing to keep racking up TD's and yards to hold Peyton off one more year.
But with Manning it is inevitable. It is only a matter of time barring serious injury that he will own all of Favre's records.....that is except the # of interceptions thrown by a QB.
-
Nah, its not the TD's record he's working on, he just wants to become the first QB to beat all 32 NFL teams ;) Two years ago he became the third QB to beat 31 NFL teams, the week after Brady and Manning did it, now he wants to beat them to all 32.

He only made an official decision not to play to get out of the first few weeks of training camp. Favre's entire "I'm thinking about retiring schtick" dates back to when the NFL first allowed teams to start holding mandatory mini-camps.
-
Favre just doesn't want to do the work involved with training camp and live in dorms. Let's not pretend like we are surprised he came back.
-
It will be an interesting development there in MN. So I have questions:
1) Will they tear the roof off the Metrodome so Brett can play on the frozen tundra again?
2) Does AP's fantasy stock go up or down? I can't tell yet.
3) Will Berrian's and Shiancoe's stock go up?
4) There's just something about this that makes me wonder: will Mary start dating Brett again? :P
-
1. No. It makes it better for his body being on astroturf.
2. Up. They have a legit passing game so teams can't stack 7 in the box.
3. Up. THere is a legit play action fake. Shiancoe will be a red zone beast.
4. I can't respond, that's an R rated movie, and not allowed in the forums.
-
Metrodome surface is actually better than astroturf now, it's a softer, fake grass surface.
AP can handle 7 in the box...it was the 8 and 9 men in the box that made it kinda tough for him... :P
-

What team does he need to beat?
-
Unless the Jets did some pwning I didn't hear about, it's his own team, the Packers.
-
Yeah, it's the Packers. Just like the only teams Brady and Manning haven't beaten are their own teams as well.
-

That's actually one of the big downsides, in my opinion. The Vikings were one half-way decent QB* away from winning it all, because AP really is that good. All they needed was some schlub who could hand off and complete 50% of his passes to a wide open receiver standing 15 yards down field to keep defenses from playing 8-9 guys in the box every down. Now, however, if the Vikings win it's going to be all about Favre all the time and AP will get relegated to the shadows.
Don't believe me? Quick, name the QB and the RB for Denver in their two superbowl winning seasons. Who is easier to recall, Terrell Davis or John Elway? It's funny considering that Davis was the dominant RB in the league while Elway was--at best--a middle-of-the-pack QB at the time.
-
Elway finally won because of Davis.
Do you think Favre will make it out of Green Bay alive if he beats them at home? Anyone check Vince's gravesite yet?
-
Favre is ruining his image the longer he does this. I have never seen someone retire twice and then take it back and decide to play. I wish him luck in Minnesota and he still deserves respect but the amount of respect he deserves is dropping rapidly the more he keeps this up. This is similar to when Michael Jordan and Mario Lemieux tried to come out of retirement and just embarrassed themselves. I can't wait for the Steelers matchup where number one defense shows Favre why he should have retired!! Can't wait for this season! Do I see a repeat coming?
-
Yeah... I bet the Pack is going to lose to the Vikings... sadly...
-
I don't like the idea of players retiring and coming back out of retirement. However, I do like the fact that the Vikings get a chance to be very competitive this year. I am a huge NFL fan and I enjoy seeing teams who have not have not gone far in the playoffs in recent years have a chance to do so. I am an Adrian Peterson fan, so it will be cool to see how he does with less pressure on him.

Maybe you should start rooting for the bills then, at this rate they'll never make it to the play offs. ( Stupid T.O.)
-
Let me clarify that statement. I don't necessarily root for a team just because they haven't won, as I have two teams, the Redskins and Ravens, and I am a diehard Redskins fan. It is just nice to see a change in scenery.

I foresee a very awkward moment if the Vikings win the Super Bowl. Would Favre be allowed to hold the Lombardi trophy? If he did, would a huge giant boulder roll down and crush the stadium?
;)

That's because Elway had been around forever...Davis (which I would have known btw) had an injury-shortened career, and ergo has not been as memorable.
-
I thought of Elway and Davis as a group. Davis would have been an all time great without his knee injuries.
-
I hear the Eagles might get Michael Vick, I sure hope so.
He never really killed any dogs, IMO. He was merely consulting them on end of life issues.

Frey, Walsh, Henley,...and Vick. Yeah, that will sell some records. :D

:rollin: Justin, you ought to get into politics, or at least TV journalism. You know how to put a good spin on things. ;)

That's kind of funny... I disagree with two things.
1. Terrell Davis came to mind at the same time, if not first. He's one of my top RB ever. I can't speak for everyone else, but I think he was remembered.
2. Are you kidding? John Elway is probably in my top 5 QB of all time. He's amazing.
-
1. Elway isn't top 5. Ain't no way. Montana, Marino, Starr, Staubach, Bradshaw, Favre, and maybe Manning and Brady, are all above him.
2. Justin works for the IRS doesn't he? So, he is in government/politics.
3. I love that pun Justin. Major Props.
-
Funny, Elway made both of these lists here (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/609633/greatest_nfl_quarterback_ever_who_is_pg3.html?cat=14) and here (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/35424/top_five_nfl_quarterbacks_of_alltime.html?cat=14). He also made this list (http://armchairgm.wikia.com/index.php?title=The_100_Greatest_Quarterbacks_of_the_Modern_Era%2C_Version_1.0)
I think it is difficult based on statistics alone not to put him into the top 5 all time. Plus he has 2 rings, he also played in multiple superbowls, he has "the Drive" and some of the best scrambling stats for a quarterback. Elway played with heart that cannot be measured in statistics and he Made things happen when he had to.
-
His rings were in the twilight of a career of failure. By the time he got there, he practically just had to manage the game. The fact remains he could not win super bowls in his prime when he was the star. Coupled with the poor statistics (in comparison to others), he's not top 5.
-
I also wouldn't put Elway in the top 5 ever. Denver's greatness rests on their running backs, not on their quarterback. One good "drive" doesn't make someone the best ever.
Montana, Manning, Marino, Farve, and Tarkington.
-

+1 If that were the case then Roethlisberger would be one of the greatest QB's ever. He is constantly leading great game ending drives (the whole drive leading up to winning superbowl XLIII comes to mind). He also has two superbowl rings...but currently unless you are crazy he would never make a top QB of all times list. Oh he is a great scrambler too...I love the guy and he is only a little shy of elway IMO but neither make top 5. Of QB's now however...1. Brady 2. Manning 3. Brees 4. Roethlisberger 5. Rivers
-
Forgot about Tarkenton. Dumb me.
Besides, the Drive was against the Browns was it not? That's like playing a semi-pro team.
-
If we take QB rushing stats out of the picture:
1. Montana
2. Unitas
3. Graham
4. Brady
5. Manning
If we include rushing stats:
1. Montana
2. Young
3. Unitas
4. Graham
5. Tarkenton
-
OK guys, keep knocking Elway if you want to but He is already in the top 5 quarterbacks of all time based on stats alone and here is a little proof. From http://www.nfl.com/history/randf (http://www.nfl.com/history/randf)
Passes attempted Carreer
8,758 Brett Favre, Atlanta, 1991; Green Bay, 1992-2007
8,358 Dan Marino, Miami, 1983-1999
7,250 John Elway, Denver, 1983-1998
Passes completed Career
5,377 Brett Favre, Atlanta, 1991; Green Bay, 1992-2007
4,967 Dan Marino, Miami, 1983-1999
4,123 John Elway, Denver, 1983-1998
Most Yards Gained, Career
61,655 Brett Favre, Atlanta, 1991; Green Bay, 1992-2007
61,361 Dan Marino, Miami, 1983-1999
51,475 John Elway, Denver, 1983-1998
Most Seasons, 3,000 or More Yards Passing
16 Brett Favre, Green Bay, 1992-2007
13 Dan Marino, Miami, 1984-1992, 1994-95, 1997-98
12 John Elway, Denver, 1985-1991, 1993-97
And couple all those stats with this one that make his body of work even more iimpressive.
Most times Sacked Career
516 John Elway, Denver, 1983-1998
494 Dave Krieg, Seattle, 1980-1991; Kansas City, 1992-93; Detroit, 1994; Arizona, 1995; Chicago, 1996; Tennessee, 1997-98
484 Randall Cunningham, Philadelphia, 1985-95; Minnesota, 1997-99; Dallas, 2000; Baltimore, 2001
This stat came from ESPN because the NFL only went down to third place. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/alltime/leaders?cat=tdpasses (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/alltime/leaders?cat=tdpasses)
Career touchdown passes
1.BRETT FAVRE 464
2 Dan Marino 420
3 Fran Tarkenton 342
4 PEYTON MANNING 333
5 John Elway 300
While I personally think that Elway is a top 5 quarterback, I understand if other do not place him there But please. lets at least acknowledge that if he isnt top 5 in your list, he is at least a very close runner up.
-
But he's not a close runner up. Considering how he played in a system that threw more than passed (out of necessity somewhat), his stats aren't that great. In my opinion, Favre isn't Top 5 either, so it's not just Elway that I drop.
Times being sacked is bad not good. He gets sacked a lot. That's terrible.
-

Well Duh! Do you really think I am that dumb? So if I am not that dumb, why would I post that Stat? hmmm. It tells me that he did all this impresive body of work behind a somewhat suspect offensive line for most of his career. (later superbowl seasons excepted of course). That stat makes his work all the more impressive
Similar to the idea that if Barry Sanders had played for almost ANY other team, we would have a different leader atop the board at Running back.
-
Or if Barry Sanders wasn't a strange guy.
So he is a gunslinger who played behind poor lines? Maybe it was a average QB.
-
The fact that he got sacked that much and STILL maintained those stats is indeed impressive. I can't believe Peyton Manning is already in the top 5 QB's with the most career TD passes. That is amazing!
-

Yeah, peyton will set the bar pretty high barring some severe injury.
-
Wow... I can't believe that Stamp and Alex don't put Favre in top 5... I think he's NO LESS than top 3... I would put him 1 but I'm too biased.
-
Why? Sure, he was great at what he was. But what he was was a gunslinger. He reguarly threw 15+ INTs and had circa 10 fumbles. His completion percentage was a pedestrian 61.6 career avg. I just don't see that being so great. Manning has already passed him easily, Brady probably has passed him, and people like Marino, Unitas, Tarkenton, and Montana are ahead of him.

+1 And last year and most likely this year are gonna kill him. He threw 22 INT's last year. I bet he throws 22 just against the Steelers this year!
-
Ouch! Favre has a cracked rib?!?!
-
I don't know... did you see that block!?
-
I don't know... did you see that block!?
Not his brightest moment to be sure, but Favre is one of the toughest guys to ever play the game and never shies away from doing something to help the team. He's thrown blocks for running backs his entire career, He just needs to learn how to throw a proper backside block.
-
One two three Favre five six seven....
-
Ouch! Favre has a cracked rib?!?!
Couldnt tell by the way he played monday night
-
Yeah, that was one decent stat line:
13/18, 142 yds, 1 td, and most important NO interceptions.
-
The great thing is, for the first time in his life, he doesn't have to be great. He only has to be GOOD. Adrian Peterson is THE BEST at what he does, hands down.
Brett Favre just has to open up a second option... and he'll do more than that.
