Title: Hard Riddle (At least for me)
Post by: Kyp Henderson on May 28, 2010, 12:23:17 AM
A hardware store has a big bargain bin.  Everything in it is the same.  Everything is worth 10 cents.
The price for one item is 30 cents, the price for two of the same items is 30 cents, the price for three items is 50 cents, and the price for 100 items is $1.00.  What is the item?!

It doesn't matter. The owner of the store is obviously French.

That was my initial thought, but the line: "Everything in it is the same" threw me off. Also, I wanted to ask for clarification on how exactly the riddle was worded, since the way it is worded in the OP doesn't allow for your answer to be correct.

Look at the wording: "A big bargain bin." Naturally, the more you buy, the better the bargain. "Everything is WORTH 10 cents." Not priced 10 cents.  However, it asks what the item IS, not how the pricing works.

Yeah but "bucklers" is a correct answer for any question.

pennies (value of a penny in copper is 10 cents) wheat pennies go for thirty cents, the new lincoln pennies go for 15 cents each, steel pennies go for about 16 cents each or 3 for 50 cents, and when you add up the value of the regular pennies they would go for 100 for a dollar...probably not even close to the right answer!

Ok, that would make sense, I didn't know the answer and my math teacher asked us it, I suspected letters, but didn't know how it worked.  I don't know if that is the correct wording for the riddle, because I did it from memory and not paper, but thanks for the answer.  I should now earn extra credit!

Some of us on the boards may have qualms about doing peoples' homework for them. Next time you should say that that's what's going on up front.

And some of us take wild guesses that may end up loosing someone extra credit...  ::)

If you had said it was for homework I still would have helped and given hints and such, but I wouldn't have hazarded a guess.

Actually though, he said extra credit and not homework. I don't have as many qualms about helping someone get a few extra points as I do doing their homework for them.

Ok, sorry, I did not know that it was such a big deal to let people know that ahead of time, it was just for fun, and it turned out that my math teacher was joking about the extra credit anyways, I will make sure to state specifically why I asked the question I ask next time.  Apologies to all offended.

We're not really offended (and anyone who gets offended at stuff on here needs to realize the internet is srsbzns), we'd just prefer not to do peoples' homework for them without being told. I know that's not the case here, just ffr.
