Title: Hall of Fame voting 2010
Post by: Prof Underwood on July 04, 2010, 02:46:56 AM
We have 8 candidates for each of the 2 categories for the Hall of Fame for 2010.  This is the last year that we will be making an exception to the rules and allow 3 people from each category to be elected.

After the election, all 6 people will be in one combined group of Hall of Famers, where they will join our 4 inductees from last year (Rob Anderson, Justin Alstad, Ron Sias, and Chris Bany).  They are simply separated below to display their various contributions.  I would appreciate all input onto this thread being positive.  Please state why you voted FOR someone, not why you DIDN'T vote for someone.

Players:
Keith Bartram (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=19078.msg300037#msg300037) – [T1-2p (x3)] - Winning Redemption's biggest event at nats every time he went.
Joshua Hey (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=19078.msg299737#msg299737) – [T2-2p, T2-mp (x2)] - 4th place overall RNRS when he left the game.  One of only 3 players to place in the top 3 at Nats in 3 different events in the same year.
Gabe Isbell – [T1-2p (x2), T2-2p, Teams] - Only player to win both 2-player events at the same Nats.  He has dominated, his decks have been copied, and cards have been created to stop him, Elder
Eric Kimmons (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=19078.msg301850#msg301850) – [T2-2p (x2), T2-mp (x2)] - Only player ever to win 4 Nats in a row.  One of 2 players who have won at 4 different Nats at all.
Eric "creative middle names" Largent - [T2-2p] - finished in the top 3 at Nats 7 years in a row, Elder
Tim Maly – [T1-2p (x2), T2-2p] - Consistently at the top for many years, and helping create the "new REG", Elder
Sam Nurge – [Sealed, Booster] - Winning the two "random" events in the same year, proving it isn't quite so random
Tyler Stevens - Consistent winner over the last 5 years as evidenced by being in the top 30 RNRS points of all time.

Contributors:
Mike Berkenpas – Author and Keeper of the REG, Elder
Roy Cruz – the Heart of Redemption, Nats host, Elder
Doug Gray – Artist, original owner of 3LG, Elder
Bryon Hake – Primary card designer, Nats host, Elder, 2x Nats winner [T2-2p]
John Michaliszyn – Nats host, Creation Festival Guru, Elder
Stephen Schaefer – Creator and manager of the Storehouse, Overlord of the online forum, Nats host, Elder
Kevin Shride - Elder, Nats winner [T2-2p]
Bill Voight - Creator and manager of Redemption Camp, Creator and host of the "Annual T2 Only Tournament"

Batram: He created the 3 deck per tournament rule from what I have heard, and he won Type 1 3 out of 4 years.
Hey: He was too good in his time to not get elected.
Kimmons: 4 straight Nats = my vote
Berkenpas: REG me, please.
Hake: Strong creative influence on the game.
Gray: for his years of service just under Rob

Players -
Gabe Isbell- generosity, humbleness and unique ability to see into the game. (don't know how else to explain it)
Eric Largent - a name that inspired me to start dabbling in T2 and see what I could do.
Tim Maly - a willingness to post a ruling with the reasoning behind it and stand by it, through reasoning, though it may be controversial.

Contributors -
Mike Berkenpas - Because without the REG......well, I'll say no more.
Roy Cruz - Heart goes a loooooooonnnnnggggggg way.
Stephen Schaefer - Without order, chaos would result.

Godspeed,
Mike

I'm not sure if it would be fair of me to vote, as my vote would be very biased towards the few people I have actually met (2 people on the players list and 1 on the contributors list). Is that alright?

Why isn't Justin Alstad on the list?

He was the first one to the hall. :)

The only one I've known personally is John Michaliszyn, and I certainly vote for him.  He's the one who got me into Redemption, and helped me out immensely.

Players (My thinking is that consistency is proof of skill and not just chance.):
Eric Kimmons
Eric Largent
Tim Maly

Contributors:
Doug Gray – Dominant voice for the Redemption community for many years.
Bryon Hake – Best host on earth, plus a dedicated contributor
Stephen Schaefer – Keeps us in order with regular appearances.

Everyone is allowed to vote.  However, if you are unfamiliar with some of these people I would encourage you to read some of the comments of the people who voted for them to get a better picture for who they are.  Some of the names even have links to a larger write-up of them (hopefully Tim will write some more this year).

Why isn't Justin Alstad on the list?
He was the first one to the hall. :)
He actually entered at the same time as Rob Anderson, Ron Sias, and Chris Bany.  But the point remains that he's already in :)

Please follow the advice I gave BB above so that you can educate yourself enough to vote for a complete set of candidates.

Ill not vote for Players because I still think the list is lacking many other players who deserve to be on the list. But for Contributors ill vote for...

Doug Gray – Great guy and was a huge influence on the game in its early years.
and...
Bryon Hake – Amazing person who showed me how to play Redemption and is one of the best tourney hosts you can ever wish for. Bryon has also been the primary designer of cards and a top ruling judge for years.

You actually get to vote for 3 players and 3 contributors.  Do you really only want to vote for 2 of your 6 possible people?  I understand that there are other great players who aren't on the list this year.  But that doesn't mean that you can't find 3 players there who do deserve to be in the HoF.  Just remember to nominate those "other players" next year when we take nominations again.

I'll add the following to my votes:
Players
Joshua Hey
-I think it's harder to win multiple events in one year than one many years
-It takes some serious guts to give up chances at winning Nats.
Gabe Isbell
-multitasker
Sam Nurge
-same

As to contributors, I don't have enough information.  I don't want to throw away my remaining two votes, perhaps some writeups could be made?

Joshua Hey - Call it some kind of bond...as I'm another one placing top 3 in 3 categories at the same nats.
Eric Largent - Simply golden as a player and a friend!
Sam Nurge - Lots of fun to watch and a killer at Sealed categories...not bad at most other categories as well.

Mike Berkenpas
Doug Gray
Bryon Hake
SIMPLY ICONS OF THE GAME...WISH I COULD VOTE FOR 4...WOULD ADD KEVIN SHRIDE.

My votes.

I vote for:
Isbell: He has probably had more say in what the next expansion will be than anyone but Rob by forcing their hand with his awesome decks. Oh, and he also helped cut my deck from 130something to 56 when I was a newb ;).
Kimmons: Just an awesome player. Owns everyone at nats.
Maly: Another awesome player, who could likely be labeled under contributor also.

Gray: Icon of the game, had a big influence.
Berkenpas: The REG is HUUUUUGGGEEEEE and IMPOOORTANNNNT.
Voight: Big force behind type 2, and brings the "fun and fellowship" part of the game to a new level.

My votes are out of respect for those who went before.  Kimmons and Bartram and Hey did AMAZING things back when redemption was still in its infancy.  We owe them alot.  Maly, Isbell and Largent will be sure to get in, but lets make sure we do right by those who went before us and blazed the trail.

Well we've come down to the last few days of voting for this year's candidates for the Redemption Hall of Fame.  If you haven't taken your opportunity to vote yet, you have a few more days to let your voice be heard.  Check out the list of candidates in the first post (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=22022.msg345314#msg345314) of this thread and then post you choices.  Please state why you voted FOR someone, not why you DIDN'T vote for someone.

Keith Bartram - I never met him or played against him, but winning main event 3 times in 3 tries is golden.
Eric Largent - Mr. Consistency with T2 placings at nationals.
Joshua Hey - His reputation speaks for itself.

Bryon Hake - Without his contributions to playtesting in recent years, the game would not have taken as large of strides as it has done.
Stephen Schaefer - Helps keep order and analyzes ruling issues to help produce important rulings.
Roy Cruz - His relentless efforts to spread the game are invigorating.

I would like to announce my endorsment of Bryon Hake for Top Redemption Contributor! Without Bryon, some of the best and most fun cards in recent sets would not have been made. Bryon is also a great contributor and an amazing Tournament host! If that wasn't enough, he has also won at 2 different nationals! If you have not yet voted, I would encourage you to vote for Bryon Hake! He will make all your wildest dreams come true! (not really)

Just to male sure I get my vote in (I mostly do moble now and can remember the list or view it while posting), I will vote for Bryon. If it wasn't for his tournaments, I would have quit redemption a few years ago.  Also, he is a great guy, helps out whenever I need his help, and is very honest (I gave him $30 last tournament and took six texp pack and a couple of minutes later, he told me that he sells them at cost so I was able to get four more ;D)

I will vote for others if I have time on my home computer before the voting time is up.
