Title: Forum Error?
Post by: Alex_Olijar on August 08, 2010, 12:11:53 AM
I was checking out the stats and found that I am the 5th most respected member. Is this a forum error? I can't possibly have 43 respect points. Has my switch to AADamage skin (which does not show respect) blinded me that much?

That being said, I have a simple request. If you come across a post by myself that was liked, or you like a post by me, please link to it in this thread. I would appreciate links to my posts that were liked. I'm really genuinely curious how this happened.

Am I the only one that has no idea what Alex is talking about?

I am referring the up and down arrows. The forum catalogues it as respect for statistical purposes. You are actuall ythe most respected member at 94 (mostly for great punning, I imagine).

EDIT: http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?action=stats (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?action=stats)

Bottom of that page has respect.

EDIT2: Ok, technically the middle of the page. Sorry.

Interesting. I never knew that was there. LOL at me being the most respected.  ;D

FWIW, Josh Kopp is the official Poster Child of the Redemption Message Boards.  ;)

He has posted around 1/10th of all forum messages. He's pretty Epic.

If it helps, I noticed that you got plenty of thumbs up throughout the Rapture thread.

Thank you! 2/43 respect points have been located! Unfortunately, the princess is in another castle! respect is still out there!

Holy crud, I'm more respected than CactusRob.
On second thought:
Holy crud, I'm on there at all!

Cactus Rob's respect per post (calculated based on posts since respect was enabled) is most likely astronomically higher than your, so that makes it alright.

EDIT: Rob is averaging ~2 respect per post since the system was enabled, however, his post-respect posts only recieved 12 of his 21 points. That means people were sniping older threads.

ut oh, now we have a place that quantifies all the respect totals. expect abuse, mayhem, and chaos to ensue.

Indeed. Perhaps "respect" is not the best word. That count should be called "Gimme some dat."   ;)

Personally, I just want to find out how I got respected. I don't know how it happened. I've always thought of myself as a bad troll and a divisive debater. Apparently though, someone likes that.

Well, that's not true. You often interject the voice of reason in the middle of the shouts of anarchy.

No, it just means you're underrated, which makes the arrow pointing down appropriate.

Ironically, my number has dropped from 94 to 86. It was inflated in the first place, so soon enough I will be back to normal. I guess I will have to stop posting on the "No, you're thinking of" thread, since someone gives everyone a -1 when they post there.
Title: Re: Forum Error?

hah! only 85 more respect to be found!
Title: Re: Forum Error?

I dropped from 3rd place (like 30 something) to almost 0 after I posted "HAH! I have more encouragements than you, therefore I am better. The only people who have more encouragements than me cheated: they made multiple accounts to + 1 their own posts!".

I don't regret it though. Gotta tell the truth  :-*

When numbers are involved, no one is happy.  Everyone wants bigger ones.

It must be an error.
Title: Re: Forum Error?
Post by: YourMathTeacher on August 08, 2010, 07:42:48 PM
Maybe we should change the word from "respect" to "laughed at." That way the table will read "10 Most Laughed At." There will be a dual meaning there that would make people less likely to finagle the numbers.  ;)

Seriously guys, now you guys are just giving him minuses on every post. What was so bad about his last post that he now has a -6?

Now you are doing the exact same thing that you're supposed to discourage: spam. Please only critique posts you actually think are useless and spam. Otherwise no noob is gonna know when they actually do some messed up post.

And in all honesty, there's a LOT of elitism on the boards, and I'll admit I'm not always on the correct side of it. Rawrlolsauce definitely has a LOT of spam; but he's been on the boards for a while and everyone thinks he's funny (he's one of my favorite members). Try to be kind to the newer board members who are trying to be funny, but just haven't had enough time to get used to everything.

Sauce typically trolls, which I see as entirley different than spam.

Sauce has reached the point where he understands the community's likes and dislikes in such a way that he can respond in a ridiculous way to virtually every situation by playing on some sort of old forum joke. His posts, if you do not take them as trolls, would be read very divisively and cause much dissention if they came from someone else.

People who attempt to emulate him simply want his results. They see + 1's and various compliments and want that mental and emotional reward, but they have not spent the time to properly recieve it.

I don't see that as a reason to support all of his spam posts. You can call it anything you want, but since I would define spam as anything that adds nothing to the discussion that the thread was started on (or obviously became centered on later on) and has absolutely no bearing to the topic. There are definitely a LOT of posts by rawrlolsauce that fit that description. I'm not saying I dislike all his spam posts, in fact I very much enjoy them. But let's take it easy on the newer members.

To each his own. I personally treat new members the same way I was treated in other forums that directly led to my reformation and subsequent maturing. I now post in complete sentences and only spell things wrong when I mistype. Before, I used txt talk all the time and provided a generally childish feel to my posts. I was corrected about that on other forums, and I bring that mind set to bear here because it worked on me.

It seems awful elitist that the thread starter, or should I say Thread Führer, gets to choose what the thread is about. Maybe those posts aren't off topic spam but a counter attack by the alliance?
