I had a great time looking through this. I've read about half the stuff on the SF side, and most of the unread I'd like to read. I'm not too much of a Fantasy person, would someone want to comment on that half?

Thought this was about the San Francisco 49ers, and you wanted us to look at Fantasy Football players. Lolz.

Several of those Fantasy authors are on my "To Read" list. Definately would recommend "The Stand" My mom was reading it and I read it too. Stephan Kings take on the battle between God and Satan basically.

I am a die hard Star Wars nerd (to the point I'd hit the "random page" on Wookiepedia to learn new stuff) and read Lord of the Rings in third grade. Yes, you read that right. I am currently re-re-re-re-.... uh... re-re-re-reading it. (I try to read it every year.) And I can write in LOTR Elvish.

I thought the movies were okay. They're great movies in and of themselves, but not anywhere near as good as the books. (I was... upset when I found out they skipped Tom Bombadil).

I KNOW! i first read that part and I was like. "Wait,What..... Why wasn't this in the Movies?"
Another thing i noticed is the books actually Sing more songs than you hear in the movies.(I Particularly like Gimili's Thorin/Moria Song)

Tom Bombadil was the biggest omission from the books by far. I much prefer the Silmarillion to the trilogy, and The Hobbit over anything else by Tolkien (I detest Christopher Tolkien and all he stands for). The movies are some of my favorites though. Really captured the spirit of the books with what they had to work with imo.
Yeah, the books were actually rumored for a long time to merely be a framework for the songs within them.

Ikr the argument always is, "if they put all that stuff in, the movie would be too long!" The trouble is, they added a whole bunch of stuff that wasn't in the books.
Also, I think they "technically" fit it in by composing a song to go with the lyrics, deleting the lyrics, and playing the song as background music. :P

According to Arthur C. Clarke, any sufficently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
I'm totally into SF, and I think that there's a vast difference between the two. Fantasy is concerned with storytelling, while SF is concerned with ideas.

Actually, societal ideas. Foundation wasn't so much a story about some old guy, it was about the inevitability of cyclic change.

They are both Ideas, Although F is More Made for Enjoyment, I Would be lying if i said i dont enjoy SF.
SF Ideas : Technological,Societal and altogether more apocalyptic (NO Aliens in F)
F Ideas: Imagination, Adventure and more rustic (How Come you never see Swords or bows in a SF?)

How Come you never see Swords or bows in a SF?
I don't know about swords or bows, but The Two-Space War had Civil War era muskets combined with space travel.

I just finished reading a SF that involved both swords and bows.
Storytelling allows the hearers, or readers, to insert themselves into the story and imagine themselves in the adventure. They can experience emotions that they wouldn't normally experience. It's reading for emotional response. SF engages the cognitive skills, which is exciting and rewarding to a certain type of human but not to all.

Or try star wars. Light sabers (saber being a kind of sword). Wookies use crossbows, and even though these have "energy" they are still the same thing as the midevil ones, just shinier. SW also has Vibroblades (Metal Swords), along with sling shots and other midevil weaponry. Honestly, SF is crawling with sword type weapons. Why? Because swords are cool, being able to see someone (or play as someone) who can cleave an enemy in twine with a flick of his wrist has appeal.
As for the difference in my opinion between the two.
SF: What ifs, that is all it is, what if the world exploded, what if the two cosmic languages were basic and Chinese, what if Kirk was a manly manly man, what if we had lazor guns, etc.
F: Creating an adventure that is impossibly captivating for some reason or another. Almost all elements (Technology and Ideology wise) of a Fantasy book are already known except for what role magic will play, if any. Which limits what they can and cannot do.
I honestly like the works of fantasy that, albeit them rare, has the magician as a scientist, rather than an actual magician. For I too can make fireballs out of air! Science, ya gotta love it.

The simplest definition of the difference between SF and F is that Fantasy explains abnormal things as magic/supernatural and Science Fiction explains them as science. Usually (though not always) Fantasy is set in past or past-similar themes (medieval, middle ages, etc.) whereas Science Fiction is usually set in future or future-similar themes (advanced technology, greater advancement than humans have accomplished, esp. space travel, etc.).
