Title: Favorite Music
Post by: BubbleBoy on November 19, 2009, 04:50:40 PM
This may sound strange, but I've just recently started to get into listening to music. However...I don't really know where to start, or even what kind of music I like, except that I know I hate rap and all the harder versions or rock. So...what are all of your favorite bands, Christian or not?

I like electronica a lot. Most pop with electronica sounds in it is ten times better.

Recently, I've been downloading a lot of obscure (to Americans) foriegn music. The classical music station in my area is about to be sold, so I've been listening to that.

My favorite bands are metal (nu-metal in specific). Examples would be: System of a Down, Korn, Linkin Park, Rammstein, Slipknot, Three Day's Grace, Metallica, Anthrax, Iron Maiden, etc. However, you probably won't like them beings you don't like heavy rock.

Your best bet might be to listen to the classics 8). The Beatles, Queen, U2, etc.

BB specifically said that he didn't mind if they were Christian bands or not. Had he wanted christian bands, my list would look different.

RELIENT K. seriously, these guys are incredible.
FM Static.
TFK's: This is a Call, Wish You Well, Look Away and Already Home are amazing softer songs. you also might want to check into Learn to Breathe.
Hawk Nelson, who I hated before today, but I found out that Trevor McNevan wrote most of their stuff, so they're now one of my favorite bands... haha
Chris Rice
Mark Schultz
Seventh Day Slumber is probably on the edge for you, you might want to look at their worship album though, it's incredible.
Owl City for electronica, haha
Leeland
Brandon Heath

and once you do get into the harder stuff and rap, which you will, cuz everything else becomes dull :P listen to TFK, Skillet, Underoath, Showbread, August Burns Red, As I Lay Dying, Demon Hunter, Flyleaf, The Letter Black, Disciple and Children 18:3... the list goes on. when you're in the in between stage, A Day to Remember is Punk/Heavy Metal. epic or fail, I still can't decide.

Because I know everyone* cares about my taste in music, here's what I've heard new over the last months...

Brother, Sister by Mewithoutyou. By all indications I should've disliked it. The music doesn't have a clean sound, the vocalist's voice isn't fantastic, he talk-shouts a lot, and it switches wildly between too-hard and too-soft. And yet I keep coming back. The lyrics are fantastic, and upon repeated listenings I've found it flows quite well as a whole. I still laugh at the guy coughing in "Orange Spider," but in general I think it's extremely well done. Current favorite tracks are "C-Minor," "Wolf Am I! (And Shadow)," "O Porcupine," and "Messes of Men."

30 Seconds to Mars (both albums). They do a great job with hard rock that doesn't devolve into growling or excessively loud chord-banging. I wish I had more to say about them, but I only got their albums recently, and while I've enjoyed the overall texture, I can't pick out exceptional tracks.

Cycles by Ghost Circus. Similar in style to 30 Seconds to Mars but perhaps a little more on the proggish side, there is some instrumental work and has a good overall feel. "Accelerate" and "Send/Return" are my current favorites, but most of all I like it as a complete album.

Everything Goes Numb by Streetlight Manifesto. I guess I was expecting more after having heard Somewhere in the Between, but it was pretty much more of the same. I still like the sound, but I wonder if I really need multiple Streetlight Manifesto albums.

Images and Words, Dream Theater. Got this at Lambo's suggestion, and it's good, but has a very 80s sound that I wasn't expecting (maybe if I noticed the 1992 release date I'd've caught on quicker). "Pull Me Under" remains amazing but the rest is just in "okay" territory for now. I need to listen to it (and all other Dream Theater) more, as they have incredible talent.

Absolutes, Barcelona. On a fluke I went to a concert featuring four bands I've never heard of: Barcelona, Anchor & Braille, Sherwood, and Copeland. Barcelona's album was the one with the most staying power for me. While mellower than most stuff I like, I quickly became enamored with "It's About Time," "Come Back When You Can," and "The Takers." It can sometimes drag on a little much, and it's not something I always want to listen to, but it has good moments. Oh, and they rely too heavily on the woah-oh-ohs.

*no one

Mute Math is a must for the Christian alternative rock lover.  They do songs that have indirect Christian meanings ("used to" is the proper term).  Example:

MuteMath - Chaos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1pFZDflEgM#)

This is a remarkable song called "Chaos".  Enjoy!

Third Days Grace
I can't decide if that's supposed to be Three Days Grace or Third Day.

and Toby Mac is rap.

and Toby Mac is rap.

Actually, he changes between rock and hip hop.  Most of his third album is rock and half of his first one is as well.

i tend to go through phases. when i was young, it was christian radio.  in my early teens, i had a love for the oldies, dont ask me why. that led to pop music... but now im stuck on alternative. it just seems right for this part of my life :)

Well so far not too many have posted much Alternative music and no one has posted any Classical music  :o

Some Good Classical Composers (ill include Soundtrack composers in this area) I listen to are...
Holst
Shostacovich (This guy is very contempary in a Classical sense :P for Classical music and I would reccomend his music if you normaly dont like Classical music)
Tchicovski (dont trust my spelling on that one :-\)
Hans Zimmer
Howard Shore
John Williams (I only like his stuff that was made post Indy Jones for some reason...)
Baroqee (This guy is either a style or a person not sure... but this kind of music is great)
Bach
Beethoven (I only like his Symphonies though :P)
Prokofiev
Balakirev
Lots of other classic dudes are out there ;)

Alt. Rock/Alternative Has loads of people that are good some of my faves are...
Foo Fighters
Cake
Barcelona (The Newer band)
Barcelona (The Old Band)(Has some funky songs but the ones that are good stick in your head)
The Killers
Coldplay
Weezer

If you are looking to get crazy look up the band The Ink Spots  8)

And Shostakovich is spelled with a 'k.' This year our marching band show was his tenth symphony. When we went to competitions, a lot of the announcers couldn't even pronounce his name. Look him up on wikipedia. Quite interesting.

Agreed on Theocracy. I still have yet to get (his) self titled album.

I'm glad he finally got a full band together though, Mirror of Souls is definately among my top christian albums. However, I think it'd be at the same spot even if the only song on it was Laying the Demon to Rest.  ;D Amazing song with some SERIOUSLY amazing vocal work. I dont know many people who can hold notes that high for that long... period.

Woops yeah I did that post really fast and I wasnt checking the spelling on names. But yeah I really like Shostakovich his music is vary deep and varied compared to much of the other music being composed at that time period. Have you ever heard his 11th Symphony? You should listen to it its good stuff 8)

I haven't heard his 11th symphony. I know his 10th was based on Stalin.
