OK, so I obviously missed when this "encouraged" thing started. What is it all about?
-
It started today - I don't know when, but I saw it around 11ish. For about 10 minutes Schaef also had the ignore feature active, but he quickly shut it back off.
I don't know if the encouragement system will stay around that much longer either, we tried it maybe a year ago, it didn't work out so well.
-
Ignore feature messed up the board layout.
-
does encouraged do anything special?
-
No.
-
What is the basic premise of the feature?
-
i was hoping to bank my points for a buckler at least.

joke
A Buddist man goes up to a hotdog vender and proceedes to look at the menu. After the man had looked over the menu for a while the vender asked him what he wanted. The man replied '' Make me one with everything".

I think you forgot to put your joke in that big space.

Totally off topic, but it was the perfect excuse to post this image that I love so much. ;D
-
Sad.... Even putting C.S. Lewis next to ... that guy.
(even further off topic: Pretty crazy how he's so famous with a name like Clive Staples)
-
Well, I didn't know his name was Clive Staples until about 4 years after I started reading his books.
-
Dust jacket.
-
I wonder if posting this will get me any encouragement.
-
I think the best way to be encouraged is to deliberately not go for it. But heck, I've only got six, so what do I know.

Not true. The best way to get encouragement is to offer to trade packs for it.
-
At the time of that last post, I had 0 encouragement. I now have 2. Clearly, it worked. ;)
-
I just think that its encouraging to see all the encouragement. Isnt that the true point? When you see others being built up to feel better about yourself as well?
-
Ya, I'm just loving life right now!

Yep. But then people get all competitive.
-
Yep. But then people get all competitive.
... for what?
-
good question. The answer to that is the driving force behind the US economy.
-
The US economy is a system of exchanging money for goods and services. Giving and receiving these points achieves nothing tangible for either party. I don't think "I agree with the content of your post" is the driving force behind the US economy.
-
Well, one thing about this system... you don't even know what post someone liked. I think it'd be better for the + 1 thing to be on the individual posts.
-
The exchange of goods and services is not the driving force. The driving force is what causes said exchange. In the American economy, people buy (on credit) things that make them look better (Purses, iPads, etc) so that they can be better than everyone else.
Specific example: Farmville. I hate it on a personal level, but love it on a business level. Firstly, all your friends can see how you're doing, and you're ranked among your friends. Now, for only $20 or so, you can become the best on this ranking system.
This doesn't get you anything tangible. Nor is it useful as an investment. The reason someone will spend this money is to show that they're better than everyone else (pride!)
Now, how does this relate to encouragement? Ever since we were young, we've been taught that having better numbers than everyone else makes us better. (Grades, Sports scores) Now, a new number pops up, and subconsciously, everyone wants to have the best number, because that's what we link our identity to (generally speaking).
I don't think there's anything wrong with offering packs for encouragement, or tattoos. Just remember that your encouragement is only a number.
-
i agree with lambo, having a thumbs up/thumbs down for each individual post would be much better than this system.
-
I was on another forum where they had per-post and overall, but up and down voting were both enabled. The problem was that people took it far to seriously and argued endlessly about it.
If TheWarrior tried to pull the same stunt over there, he would most likely have been banned.
I personally didn't like the system because people kept voting down my posts about Jesus.
Dang Dirty Ape-thiests!

That's sort of my point: they don't do anything.
As to the other comments, I disabled thumb-downing before I even turned it on, so as to avoid that exact problem. There is no per-post support in this version of the forums and I lack the time and programming expertise to do a custom job just for this. So for the moment, it's this or nothing.
-
Can I vote nothing, and we get the ignore feature back? ;)
-
This whole thing is not encouraging.

Ironically, I encouraged you for that. Perhaps a new name is in order?
-
I don't think "I agree with the content of your post" is the driving force behind the US economy.
The folks at Mattel who paid $3.8 billion for The Learning Company would disagree with you. As would all the people who invested in TheGlobe.com, Boo.com, and InfoSpace.
"How quickly people forget the late 90's," he laments.
-
Are any of those companies even in operation today?
... I'm expecting to learn this post was ironic.
-
Interesting, can we have a - encouragement? I want to be -!

Sure. Of the ones listed Boo.com is (I believe) the only one that is defunct.
Back in 1999, young master hobbit would be well on his way to becoming and internet-millionaire hood with his novel encouragement-based revenue model and successful launch.

Sure. Of the ones listed Boo.com is (I believe) the only one that is defunct.
In March of 2007, management made the decision to shutdown the operations of both its computer games and VoIP telephony businesses. On September 29, 2008, theglobe.com sold the business and substantially all of the assets of its Tralliance Corporation subsidiary to Tralliance Registry Management Company LLC, a private entity controlled by Michael S. Egan, theglobe.com's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer... Immediately following the sale of the business and substantially all of the assets of its Tralliance Corporation subsidiary, theglobe.com became a shell company with no significant assets or operations, and has no source of revenue other than revenue related to the “net revenue” earn-out arrangement with Tralliance Registry Management. (http://theglobe.com/)
As of December 17, 2008, TLC closed its online store, leaving their products to be found at retail stores and other online distributors. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Learning_Company)
Additionally, TLC sells/sold computer games, theglobe offered content publication, boo sold brand name fashion clothes and infospace is a meta-search engine. All of these examples provide a service beyond the capacity to send or receive plus-ones, and the ones that did not offer a tangible product rely(ed) on advertising revenue for their business model. They are not examples of thumb-up as an economic model, but the sale of advertising space like a newspaper or magazine.
