Post by: Lamborghini_diablo on August 23, 2011, 02:08:46 PM
Anyone else on the east cost feel that? A 5.8 hit Virigina/DC a few minutes ago.

My dad did in Pittsburgh. I didn't. Facebook confirms a feel in MA.

I felt it, its the first earthquake I've ever felt in my life.

I was just wondering if I was experiencing low blood sugar or something.  It was weird.  I stood up.  My exact thought was "surely, that wasn't an aftershock."

You'd be right, it wasn't an aftershock, it was just a shock.  :P

Reading about the scale. 5.8 would only cause damage to poorly built stuff. Its 7 and above that is a cause for panic.

This was also my first earthquake that I remember.

Pictures of the destruction are pouring in. I've hidden one under a spoiler tag because of how tragic it is. This is not for the faint of heart.

Is that yours in the picture, Lambo? I'm so sorry.

I'll have you know that there is now collateral damage from the earthquake. My wife snorted Root Beer out her nose while laughing at Lambo's picture.

Would it be too much to ask to steal that picture so I can post it on my Facebook page to let my family get a kick out of it. I would credit you..... if I knew your real name.  ;)

My goodness I have not laughed that hard in a while.

It's from a blog post. Lambo is a plagiarizer :(

My dad felt it at work, but me and my mom didn't feel it at all. Probably because we live on a giant bedrock hill. Kinda sad I missed it.

Yeah its not my picture, but the original link had some... unfriendly words on it, and the image didn't hotlink properly.

Seriously though, we had a 7.2 last year (about 95x more energy released) and my brothers sat around making jokes about who farted...

^^^My friend's post on Facebook. You wimpy east coast n00bs.

To be fair though, on the east coast, a 5 or 6 can travel for about 300-400 miles.

I suppose any "wimpiness" exhibited by east coasters would be the same "wimpiness" exhibited by so-californians if you got a 10 inch snowfall like midwesterners and east coasters get every year. Just sayin' ;)

There's no where to take it. Everything would be closed.

Oddly, this would develop into a triple-threat disaster.  Because it's SoCal, the snow would melt quickly and cause flooding.  The flood waters would empty into the ocean causing a sudden pressure change in the earth's mantle creating an earthquake.

Let's not forget the mudslides on the way down.

Excellent point.  Also, there's the forest fires started in the surrounding mountains by tipped over space heaters.
