Title: DR.WHO?
Post by: I am Knot a Blonde! on October 20, 2012, 04:40:01 PM
So, I just finished watching this series on netflix.
Wow.
While I still have it fresh in my head, who wants to have a very complicated yet interesting conversation about it?

I'm almost done with Season 6 and it's pretty good.

I liked Tennant more than Smith, although, Smith was pretty close with the bow-tie and fez...

I like my Doctor to be quirky, so Tom Baker and Matt Smith are my favorites. Tennant was great but just a bit too cool. And I Eccleston didn't stick around long enough. I don't like turnover to be too fast (another reason why Baker is awesome).
As for the series, I'm caught up to present, and excited about seeing the direction things will go with a new companion starting at Christmas. However, I'm pretty frustrated at BBC for being so inconsistent with their seasons. Some years it was fall/spring, then it was spring/fall, then nothing last spring, then just a few episodes this fall before a long break. It tries my patience.

Tennant is the best doctor. That is all.

I used to like Tennant. He was my first doctor (I think? I might have watched an episode or two of some other doctor in there, but Tennant was my first doctor after I started following the series carefully) and was one of my favorite. But the more I watched the older stuff then Smith, the more I realized that Tennant was an awful doctor and just went running around and shouting instead of being interesting. So I've come to really dislike Tennant. And I've never really liked Eccleston.
I haven't watched the newest season and I don't really plan to follow the series again unless Moffat is replaced. Moffat was awesome when he wrote The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, etc, but the only good episode he's written since then is A Good Man Goes to War (and, for the record, the Rory-Sontauren scene was the only exceptional part of that episode.) I know I said this multiple times, but I'm still mad at Moffat for what happened the season before this last one. The dues ex machina (LITERALLY!!!! THAT MAKES ME SO ANGRY), River not killing Rory, killing Rory 40 times, the terrible pun to end the season.... I could go on.
Which is really disappointing, because Closing Time was a great episode and The Doctor's Wife is the best episode since The Curse of Fenric. Or Battlefield. Whichever was released later. I think it's the Curse of Fenric but I'm too lazy to check.

Seconded. He's my favorite Doctor. :) I, having never seen the Harry Potter movies, was really disappointed when I found out that David Tennant played a bad guy in "Goblet of Fire." :'(
At any rate, I liked the new episodes we got this fall. I thought I was gonna cry like a baby at the end of "Angels Take Manhattan," but I didn't. My eyes simply welled up and that was it. I have only ever really watched the new show that started in 2005, but I'm interested in checking out episodes with the 4th and 5th Doctor. Can anyone recommend any episodes with them in it?

5th Doctor? THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI 4th Doctor - Genesis of the Daleks I guess. The Talons of Weng-Chiang is often highly rated too, but it isn't that great.

I've grown to like Smith over Tennant. I recently rewatched the series, and Eccleston moved up a bit in my book, but Tennant stayed the same. Smith is always growing. Prof makes a good point--Tennant was a bit too cool.
I haven't watched enough Baker to judge him. I did like McCoy in The Curse of Fenric (best episode ever).
I'm really not sure why Caves of Androzani gets so much attention. It's not even close to being on the top of my list, and the fifth doctor was lame.
Deus Ex Machina>Flesh. Just saying. If it was the flesh I would have given up on Doctor Who altogether. Of course, I haven't watched it since then...

I haven't seen any of the older series, so my comments are only from the 2005-present series. I started with Eccleston and Piper (I know some people think she stinks in Season 1 but I liked her). Tennant followed and is where I currently am (with Donna as the companion). I've skipped some episodes, mostly watching the ones that are the big, lore-important ones. I like Tennant more than Eccleston, but I think Eccleston could have been great, too, if he'd had more time. I've seen snippets of Matt Smith episodes and I'm not sure what I think of him. However, I choose to reserve judgment until I've watched the rest of Tennant's important episodes and seen Smith episodes for myself.

I have also never seen any of the older DR. who shows, I am on season 3 of the 2005-newer stuff. Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to think as quickly as the DR. can!!!

Just pointing out that I've followed through with this :-*. That may seem pretty easy considering that post isn't very old, but my dorm floor is engineering students only, so it was pretty hard to avoid Dr Who.

Overall, I really like Oswin. I'm feeling sure Smith's time is drawing to a close though, and that's sad, because he's really grown on me. Benedict Cumberbatch for 12th? Probably not. I think this season is the best so far, but it may just be because I haven't watched Who in quite a while.

I also like Oswin, and am excited to see what direction she pulls the Doctor. I disagree about Smith's time drawing to a close. I think having this new companion is going to rejuvenate his character, and expect he'll stick around for quite a while longer.

Blink The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

The best: Curse of Fenric The Caves of Androzani Battlefield The Doctor's Wife Genesis of the Daleks City of Death
Overrated: The Talons of Weng-Chiang Blink
Underrated: The Greatest Show In The Galaxy Battlefield
Caves of Androzani is so overrated, at least from a current standpoint. We know The Doctor will regenerate. Blink is probably overrated but still really good. The main issue is the Doctor isn't as involved as he should be. Doctor's Wife was really good...
Granted. Midnight was also excellent, as was Silence in the Library.
I think Waters of Mars is overrated. I didn't like the "oh, I'm a Time Lord, I can do whatever the heck I want" attitude that it introduced. Fortunately, it was right at the end of Tennant.

I liked the End of Time episode, it was a sadder end and it gave at least me a better understanding of regenerations but Matt Smith jumps right in just fine. I like that one.

Old seasons are good, but like most older British TV, is very dated. More science/educational feel than the modern adventure/syfy style it uses now.
Blink is an excellent episode. I like stories that explore nonlinear time travel in a linear story without following the time traveler. Iconic quotes, too. I think my favorite episode is the one introducing Matt Smith. I had a hard time accepting previous cast changes, but I liked both 11 and Amy by the time fish sticks were tested, especially after the heaviness of Tennant's last. I also really like the Van Gogh story.
I hope Matt Smith is around for awhile. He seems to like being an icon, and with a BAFTA nomination, he'd probably be interested in trying to win while on a solid show (although I completely agree that Benedict Cumberbatch should give it a go before he's too big for the BBC).

I think there are several places on the web that host TV shows like this for free. But make sure that you have a REALLY good virus protection, because clicking on anything on those websites is pretty sure to infect your computer with something nasty.

You can always check libraries for DVD collections. This site searches almost every library at once. If you click on a season and enter a zip code, it will find the nearest copy.

Today, one of my friends said that he thinks Tilda Swinton is going to be the 12th doctor. I don't know how likely that is, but man... I'd start watching again if that were the case.

As cool as that would maybe be, The Doctor shouldn't switch gender. It'd be totally out-of-character for him, especially as he seemed to find The Corsair's tendency to do so highly amusing.
Title: Re: DR.WHO?
Post by: Rawrlolsauce! on January 09, 2013, 07:30:00 PM
Catherine Zeta Jones was Davies' suggestion for the 11th doctor, so it's not that far out there. They've been adding stronger female companions (especially River Song) since Smith took over, which would help segue into a female doctor. And really, although the Corsair's gender switches could have been a meaningless comment, if a female doctor is chosen, confirming a gender switch ability is necessary.

We already have very strong female companions, why do we need a female doctor? I wouldn't watch that, but I'm probably in a huge minority there. The only way I could be persuaded otherwise was if at no point whatsoever did any part of the show become "ooh, look how female I am now!"
Title: Re: DR.WHO?

I actually do not like the idea of having a female doctor, that would just be weird! But like many people I would still watch, but at that point it would be more to say that I still watch DR. Who then it would be for the show quality. ::)
