Title: Breaking Bread.
Post by: michaeljl on May 19, 2012, 10:26:03 PM
I've noticed that a lot of my Italian friends will have big dinners with large groups of friends, lively conversations, several courses of pasta, bread, salad, and wine. Everyone is welcome and brings friends and people will pitch in their food.

It made me realize that I want to adopt this tradition myself and start inviting large groups of friends over and break bread with them.

So the topic I'd like to start, basically, revolves around the merits of eating meals together and breaking bread with friends, and how this idea manifests in your own life.

It's of course important in the family, as well, I'm sure. I've heard it even can help keep the kids off drugs, which is important because drugs are bad for you.

NB4 thread becomes about drugs. This is pretty much the best idea ever. There's a reason Jesus instructed his followers to break bread together (besides the cannibalism, cue transubstantiation debate).

A reference to an early Roman criticism of Christianity that led to their persecution. According to the point of view of the Romans, the early Christians were atheists because their god was dead and human, cannibals because they ate the flesh of their god, anarchists because they refused to serve in the army or participate in society (since the early Christians were communists), and pacifists who wouldn't serve in the military. Thus, they were hated and were an easy target for Nero to pick on.
