I just read an article about Florida vs. Utah for National Title consideration, and noticed this breakdown of ranked opponents (All rankings come from the final AP Poll):
Utah beat:
#6 Alabama
#7 TCU
#18 Oregon State
#25 BYU
(no losses)
Florida beat:
#5 Oklahoma
#6 Alabama
#13 Georgia
#21 Florida State
(and lost to #14 Mississippi)
They had one common opponent (Alabama) whom Utah beat 31-17 and Florida beat 31-20.
Maybe Utah's case was better than some thought.... :o

Until Oklahoma and Notre Dame are banned for life from the BCS, there's no point in arguing for the legitimacy of their selection process anyway, for the national title game or any other in the mix.

BCS is awful. Utah should share the title, but of course we all know that will never happen. Happened to Auburn a few years back too.

Utah's problem was that they had a bad team nickname. If instead of the "Utah Utes" they had called themselves "The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame" they would have had a shot at the national title. Heck, with that nickname and 12-0 record the PTB would have called off the BCS Championship game and anointed them the National Champions back in December.

That was word for word my exact first thought when I read the subject line... ::)

By comparing their best opponents based on end of the year rankings is not a truly valid consideration. The final rankings reveal how each team finished the season. However, it is more important to look at how each opponent was doing at the time that Florida and Utah played each opponent as that truly dictates how good each team was that Florida and Utah beat at the time that they played each opponent. Florida beat the #1 team in the rankings in back to back games (Alabama and Oklahoma) and they beat #4 LSU earlier in the season. Utah beat #12 TCU and #14 BYU before playing a reeling #4 Alabam team in their bowl matchup.

Where was Miss. ranked when they beat FL?
-
They weren't. Their win over Florida was a critical turning point in their season.
