Hello, one and all
Many people who read this have already abandoned their TV's because they are disgusted with what garbage it has to offer. If this is you, I applaud you. For the rest of you, I provide the following case, albeit simple, against TV:
Harms of TV:
I, like so many of you, am fed up with my Television Set. Whenever I watch the TV, I become sensitive to the politically correct and provocative commercials, so I mute them. Whenever I mute them, I am assailed by the flashing lights and sparkles of car commercials. They all tell me to buy, buy, and buy! I will never be satisfied unless I buy the product that they sell.
I flip to a different channel, one that should have a modicum of redeeming quality, the News Station. No matter what my bias is, I keep getting the same old talking points pounded into my head about the politics of the day. Maybe I can sate my thirst for entertainment by watching films!
I turn the channel to Sci-Fi, and what do I get, but a ton of people treating Halloween with just as much luster as Christmas; I am disgusted.
Every time I turn the channel, I feel the pressure of indoctrination and hidden intentions lying in wait for me, ready to ensnare my mind with frivolity, laziness, and very unchristian thoughts. Even some of the Christian stations appear artificial; propped up with the glamour of modern wealth and worldly vices.
Meanwhile, a book is collecting dust on my coffee table. It is formidable in size, but if I stopped filling my head with this garbage of a TV, I could complete it in a couple of weeks.
For many, their real family "socializes" with the TV, and not the rest of their family. The crowbar of modern culture (TV) tears families apart, but books normally have the opposite effect.
Objections to my case:
If you are going to post and defend TV for its good shows, hear me out: If your right eye causes you to stumble, remove it. Sure, it will be painful, but you shall be spared from stumbling in the future.
Furthermore, to those who say that I should make the same argument for my computer, here is my defense: My computer is easier to control. I use it for good purposes primarily. Computers can be used for evil, true, but it is easier to filter. Furthermore, I can walk away from my computer more easily because I am not addicted to every pulse, light and phrase that it provides.
Purpose of this Post:
If you have not deciphered the purpose of this post by now, don't worry for this is my mission:
1. I will, following the November Elections restrict my viewing of the TV to one hour a week.
2. I will substitute this wasted time in front of the TV for more worthy and wholesome entertainment, and I will therefore free myself to pursue family-time and any hobbies that I have left on the back burner. I will also be able to set aside more time to grow spiritually with my Bible, rather than a remote control, in my lap.
3. I, by sharing this information, will try to encourage fellow followers of Christ to join in this campaign against TV.
If you can empathize with this cause, then I encourage you to spread this campaign against TV. I know I am not the only one who is fed up with the control it has had over me, and it will be a lot easier to commit to something like this to know that others share your goals. If you choose to do this, it will not be easy at first, but you will be greatly rewarded with the freedom that you allow yourself. By leading as an example, you will provide strength for others to resist TV as well.
In The One who deserves every minute of every day,
~The Spy

They all tell me to buy, buy, and buy!
Lol, Thats what my grandpa said last time he was at my house.
And I would love to join this Anti-TV campain but I only have one channel at my house and I don't ever watch that. :P
-
God made TV for 3 reasons:
1. Sunday Football
2. Monday Night Football
3. Superbowl Sunday
Thank you, and have a good day. :)

How many hours a week does that take out of your time? Then restrict your viewing to just those hours.

the only thing I use my TV for is video games, movies, the Superbowl and the occasional SNL, it's worked out pretty well so far

See, you are already ahead of me. Good job. ;)

I don't watch much TV during the week, except for a couple of shows... The Office, SNL, and every once in a while, Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader. All of the shows mentioned, add up to only 3 hours.
So I really only spend time watching TV on Sunday and Monday. Which is also just limited to football season.

The more TV you avoid, the less of a hold it has on you and the resulting freedom is refreshing. Your interest level is dependent upon your frustration with the TV.

This is an amazing post.

something for me. I only use it for Wii, football, baseball, and the occational movie. (maybe 3 hours a week + too much wii time)

So, what I basically got out of that statement is; "You are sucked in by TV, you have based your life on it. You only like it, because you are mad."
Which, I COMPLETELY disagree with. I watch an insanely less amount of TV compared to a majority of America. I'm in High School and I keep a very high grade average, and all of my classes are on a college level. So don't even say that TV "corrupts the youth and kills brain cells". I'm also on the computer a majority of my free time, and that, I would think, should be considered nearly parallel to what the TV is for. Computer is also a part of entertainment, as is TV. Sure the computer could be used for typing up papers, but TV also has things such as the History Channel and Discovery Channel. Which are basically there to teach you facts about our world, but it keeps you interested. Not all TV is bad.

Agreed. Now all we need is a SNL episode that has Dwight and Amy Poehlor doing the weekend update.

No, I only stated that the less you watch the more free you become. :-\ There was nothing negative in my statement. When I said, "Your interest level is dependent upon your frustration with the TV." I meant that you are more likely to agree with my idea if you are already upset with the TV.

I was accusing you of nothing, and I don't know why you are acting offended. I am sure that you would agree that time in front of the TV could be more wisely put to practical use.

Well, my first statement addressed both of these issues already. I might add that computers can be used to accomplish things.

Any more, there's little time to catch anything other than some of the staples we watch through the week, Heroes and such. I'm not really compelled to campaign against the TV per se, but you know what, turn it off once in a while. Play a board game; they are great fun, and you can actually have a two-way conversation with the other player(s). I happen to know a guy who can hook you up with some at reasonable prices. ;D

I wish I had people to actually play with :-p. I need to kidnap a part of ohio to FL ;)

I'm taking a course in TV broadcast that is discussing the effect of TV on culture, and whether it is a good medium. Here are my thoughts:
I flip to a different channel, one that should have a modicum of redeeming quality, the News Station. No matter what my bias is, I keep getting the same old talking points pounded into my head about the politics of the day. Maybe I can sate my thirst for entertainment by watching films!
One of my textbooks was written in the 1980s by a NYU professor that thought TV would destroy civilization. He flat-out says that "stupid" shows (read: those that do not claim to be worthwhile, such as American Idol or CSI, which are obviously just for entertainment) are perfect for TV and fit the medium well. It is entertainment that presents itself as something more (ie, the news, Sesame Street, and it even claims televangelists fall into this category) that doesn't work, as viewers are not actively critiquing the content they are viewing. Thus, it makes them think they are learning and comprehending a concept, when they are really just being told a handful of random things that hardly cover the concept, making them worse off than before.
Meanwhile, a book is collecting dust on my coffee table. It is formidable in size, but if I stopped filling my head with this garbage of a TV, I could complete it in a couple of weeks.
You're right to identify books as a better source of information, as they are usually intended as a complete work, and they must rely on non-entertaining means to keep an interest. It also allows active response, as you expect it to make claims. The written word is a better medium for intelligent arguments, as the reader can think more effectively. It also takes a fair amount of credibility or a number of peers to make a book happen, compared to something on TV taking just an insane man and a camera.
I disagree with you here. Computers are even worse at presenting entertainment as important information -- blogs, user-generated videos and information, the web has been used poorly as a form of information distribution, as it is extremely hard to tell if you are getting fact or fable. (The professor of the course said that the web also does a horrible job at trying to filter itself -- which TV at least tries to do. He had an assignment where we compared a day w/o TV to a day w/o computers -- scary stuff.)

And if anyone has a TV larger than 19" that they are ditching, I'll come get it. I couldn't fit my TVs in my van when we moved to Florida. My daughter has to stand right in front of our tiny thrift store TV just to be able to read the words to Barney's Sing-a-Long.
Weather being what it's been this week, please help yourself.
Just so that there are no false impressions, it was 41 degrees this morning in Orlando.
-
It was snowing last night in Ohio though :-p so it must be warmer here. I love this weather. Any place above 20 is awesome weather.
-
I love this weather. Any place above 20 is awesome weather.
I agree completely. I liked having a little bite in the wind. I was trying to expell any preconceived notion that it's always 80 degrees and sunny in Florida.
This morning I went into school in my normal short-sleeve shirt. My students thought I was insane, since they were all wearing four layers or a parka. It was good for a chuckle. ;D

You sound like me, Pants+normal light shirt in the middle of winter here. Middle of summer and I'm in a hoodie... idk why I do that second one.

Well this comes back to what my mom said "if we don't let them have what they want on tv, then they wouldn't let us have what we want." it's like anything we have to let people have bad books so we can have the Bible.... Sad yes very but it's the way things go...Ans funny thing about the whole hollow week thing cause that's true. But I like tv I watch the news, old movies(black and white and when people could act) but yes there's always good and bad it's life sad but true

I've noticed them getting stricter about cursewords on TV and radio

I've noticed them getting stricter about cursewords on TV and radio
I disagree. For instance, I was very disappointed with Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoon this past Friday where the clones said "hell" as an expletive twice. I had to talk to my son afterward to make it clear that it was not a nice thing to say. I find it disturbing that the expression "What the h__" has creeped more and more into family programming as acceptable.
-
It usually surprises people when I tell them I don't own a TV. I haven't had regular access to a TV in about a year, but I still get to watch most (all?) shows I want online (through their networks' websites or occasionally on YouTube if they're not on the air or on DVD). Give me a game of Nexus Ops over that time spent watching TV any day.
-
Give me a game of Nexus Ops over that time spent watching TV any day.
Same for me, just replace Nexus Ops with Legend of Zelda or SSBB

I agree with the whole bad words in children programming it's getting worse and other things like "total drama island" at one point a girls top comes off..it's pixeled out but still the thought is there and it's a cartoon! I mean that should go into the same line with family guy...and not to mention how they try to work other suggestive things in cartoons
-
This is my 4th year living in the hills of Eastern KY, where the only TV signal you can possibly get is satellite. And since we didn't want to pay for that, we haven't had any TV since moving here. I haven't missed it at all.
We still watch movies (which we have total control over what we choose to see). Most of these are VeggieTales for the kids, but we sometimes watch others. I just recently saw Fireproof and loved it. Other than that, about the only thing I have seen lately are some old episodes of Star Trek:TNG that a friend had, and the first 2 seasons of Babylon 5 (on Hulu.com) that I'm almost finished with.
Life is better this way.
P.S. Spy, since you'll be having more free time, perhaps you could join our online tourney when the points reset next week.

I pretty much only use the TV for movies and occasionally videogames. The computer however, I am on WAY more then infront of the TV.
-
I do still watch tv regularly but I really only have two shows I actually make sure I watch (Heroes and Lost). Most of the time, I'm either watching Fox news, something on Discovery, or Cosby show.

Family guy actually gives you a Parental warning though, Drama island doesn't :(
-
really if gives you a warning but it's like 5 sec long and it's green and it saids it's PG..lol to that and btw i don't think that family guy has really ever had a girls top come off from the front and them having to pixel it out...it's the bad words and the "other" so called comedy in it

Hey all, I am sorry to tell you all, but I only check this board once or twice a day. Thusly, my responses to you all shall be somewhat slow.
Furthermore, to those who say that I should make the same argument for my computer, here is my defense: My computer is easier to control. I use it for good purposes primarily. Nevertheless, computers can be used as tools that peoiple can interact with. Unfortunately, the same fact/fable problem can be said of TV as well. The web does a bad job of filtering because it is used to find things and accomplish tasks, but I understand your position well. I agree with you for the most part here, but there is a difference between TV's and computers that I want to shed light on: A TV throws random material at you; a computer assists you in your tasks and finds things for you that you search for.
I can think of a lot of more important things to champion than, "Throw away your TV!"
Sean
True, but that does not negate the importance of this idea, but only compares it to other things. The plan is so simple enough that you should not mind it being championed.
Life is better this way.
Agreed.
P.S. Spy, since you'll be having more free time, perhaps you could join our online tourney when the points reset next week.
*wince* Well, I would love to. I will give it some thought, but I try to limit my computer time to spare my eyes from burning, and they do.
I do still watch tv regularly but I really only have two shows I actually make sure I watch (Heroes and Lost). Most of the time, I'm either watching Fox news, something on Discovery, or Cosby show.
I never watched heroes. However, I enjoyed LOST until they tried to push the envelope of PC garbage. After that happened, I quit.
I can think of a lot of more important things to champion than, "Throw away your TV!"
Sean
+1 abortion better education the war drags better cartoons on tv ::) :P........
Yes, but can you really boycott for those things? And was I ever saying that the above issues are not important? NO! But nonetheless, the TV is a simple thing to just stop watching.

I mind that this is getting face time when there are a plethora of things that are exponentially more important that are not even spoken of. I will listen to your anti television rant when the more important things have been addressed and solved. You need to get your priorities straight.

I really don't think there's any reason to be so harsh towards him for wanting to make a change in his life that he sees as potentially positive. And if it is really that big of a deal, it's probably better handled in PMs.

if you had just polled a more diverse selection of people we could have avoided this little misunderstanding ;)

I told you, we tried, however, unfortunately, we here at the Janissary polling institute like to maintain intelligence in our polls and so, it is not our fault that certain groups could not qualify/did not apply to participate in our polls.

If we were really organized that way, then why do we watch TV to begin with? After all, by giving up on TV, I can free myself to do better things that use up my time, like Redemption. ;D
I really don't think there's any reason to be so harsh towards him for wanting to make a change in his life that he sees as potentially positive. And if it is really that big of a deal, it's probably better handled in PMs.
Yeah, I don't know where the animosity is really coming from. After all, I am not "ranting" as Sean put it, I am just proposing something positive. :) I personally find the harms of TV to be significant enough to boycott.
-
The issue of TV is a triviality compared such things as sex trafficking, slave trade, genocide, hunger, homelessness, the simple fact that there are people who have not heard the truth of the Gospel, etc...
I'd rather spend my time with the things that are not trivial.
Sean

And in order to spend your time on those things, you'd probably need to... turn off the TV?

precisely :) It takes no time at all to stop doing something.

There is no correlation to giving up TV and being able to be involved with the important issues.
I first learned about sponsoring a child while watching TV. Would you have it be so that I would not begin sponsoring a child?
I first learned about the genocide in Sudan while watching TV. Would you have me be ignorant of a clear injustice and not be able to encourage involvement to stop it?
The Billy Graham Phone Center has had over 1 million people call in seeking prayer and/or wanting to receive Christ as their Lord and Savior because they were watching TV. Would you have it be so that those people never got ministered to?

So what does it hurt you for him to give up the TV?
I first learned about sponsoring a child while watching TV. Would you have it be so that I would not begin sponsoring a child?
I learned about it from the back of a CD. Some kids learned about it from a promotional playing card, or from a famine sponsored by their youth leader.

If you're incapable of picking up a newspaper or accessing Internet news sites, sure, be as ignorant as you please.

Two reasons. The first is that I disagree that television is something that needs to be given up on something more than a personal/individual basis. Second is that the clearly more important things seem to be a getting a back seat when they should be at the forefront.

man alot of views in one post!
oh and as I said befor " good and bad sad but life" now I am 13 okay I go to the tv to watch alot of stuff because alot of stuff is on, okay PC's we can control...and tv we can also I mean theres very bad stuff on both (heck the pc is worse it doesn't have rating you can find any crap on it) but on the tv you CHOSE to watch what's on just like you CHOSE to play, watch,do on the pc.
It's like if i said " oh i'm watching this because the tv is making me?" NO! that's like saying "i'm watching this because my PC is making me" HECK both are harmful to us we don't need to throw around views why the tv is good or bad it's BOTH okay you can not watch tv if you want it doesn't matter to me (btw i went to a christian fest once NO tv NO pc for 4 days (not long i know) but still anyway it didn't bother me at all) but it's not a big deal and try to make something look evil when people know it's evil but it also is good it's a mix it's just like LIFE
okay i'm done...

The first is that I disagree that television is something that needs to be given up on something more than a personal/individual basis.
People can choose what they are going to do about TV based on his points. I read them, understand a lot of them, agree with some of them, my TV watching (slim as it is) is not diminished.
Second is that the clearly more important things seem to be a getting a back seat when they should be at the forefront.
He spent ten minutes typing a post on the Internet. If that's critical time wasted from another critical issue, and he refuses to give it back to you, I will personally donate ten minutes of my time to hunger relief in central Ohio to make up for him. Will that satisfy you?
-
Schaef, I'm pretty sure he's spent mroe than ten minutes defending this. Also, I believe Sean was making the point that he's busy making sure he doesn't watch TV instead of making sure he feeds the hungry or whatever. Forgive me if I'm wrong, Sean.
-
Schaef, I'm pretty sure he's spent mroe than ten minutes defending this.
Do you believe that he is setting up a headquarters to run a campaign to stop TV watching across the nation? If not, I suggest you argue the point and not the semantics.
Also, I believe Sean was making the point that he's busy making sure he doesn't watch TV instead of making sure he feeds the hungry or whatever. Forgive me if I'm wrong, Sean.
To which I already responded that it takes no time or effort to not watch TV, you just don't do it, so there's nothing lost in doing so, and in fact, turning off the TV frees him up to take on these other efforts, so what's the big deal?
-

NO! that's like saying "i'm watching this because my PC is making me" HECK both are harmful to us we don't need to throw around views why the tv is good or bad it's BOTH okay you can not watch tv if you want it doesn't matter to me (btw i went to a christian fest once NO tv NO pc for 4 days (not long i know) but still anyway it didn't bother me at all) but it's not a big deal and try to make something look evil when people know it's evil but it also is good it's a mix it's just like LIFE
okay i'm done...

<<BACK ON TOPIC>>
TV can be good and bad but really I think this is a bunch of pointless rambling, Sean, quit being cynical you've taken your opinion WAY to far, Schaef, you've fought Seans opinion WAY to much...if everybody will focus on the main point. To spend more time on godly things than worldly thing we'll all get along...some of us...no...most of us on this thread are acting way to immature stop the bickering and focus on the good intent that it was put forth with by Spy

Because Caleb is god, and whatever he says is automatically right. Remember that.

It seems that the only ones who are in on this have had a head start... they don't have TV's.

Gandalf the White, here is just a little bit of forum ediquitte. When a thread had been dead for a long time, please don't necropost (restart thread with no new info.) It just isn't proper.
Just MHO, but you need to slow down on your posting. Before you post, really ask yourself if your post (especially on old posts) contains new and interesting info. If it doesn't, or it is just a "lol" or a "=D", don't post. Don't spam, and people will love you. ;)

I know board etiquette can be difficult. For example, while necroposting is almost always bad, you will get yelled at for not necroposting if you create a new topic of something that has already been quite lengthily discussed. For example, at one point there were no fewer than five "favorite music" threads on the first few pages. But if you do necropost, it must be because you want to bring something new to a discussion. Bringing this back to chime in that your family has also gotten rid of TV is not a good reason to bring it back. Perhaps posting an article on the negative/positive effects of TV on this generation, along with accompanying text containing your own thoughts (a MUST when posting an article, simply giving a link and then saying "what do you think?" is annoying) would be a legitimate reason.
In other words, you'll get the hang of it eventually, as long as you listen to those who have been posting longer than yourself.

Actually I was wondering how has The Spy's goal of not watching more than one hour of TV turned out?
Is it all you had hoped for and more? or did you cave to the pressure and watch TV?

Since you ask, I will answer. My goals had turned out as I had planned for the most part. At nearly every chance I refused the TV, but no matter how hard I tried to the television off, someone in my family always turned it back on. Therefore, the solution has come quite recently. By allowing the cable to be cut, nobody in my household watches TV anymore. So although it took time, it worked out in the end. :) Now, I am as fervent as ever to keep away from the Television. It has allowed me the free time I have needed to read books by the week so that my stack has shrunk considerably. I am a happy person for books and enjoy them far more than television.

Good reasons to keep TV:
1. UFC

Ughh, I hate watching sports. Watch PBS and learn something.

I once challenged my kids in m y youth group to "fast" from TV for a month. It was the month of May during all the "sweeps" programing. I had three students actually take me up on it and they all said the same thing. It was hard, one even gave up during the month, but they also found that they had a lot more time to do other things they liked and, while they havent banned TV from their lives altogether, it gave them a great perspective to judge how "addicted" to TV t hey can become and it helps them limit or choose the programing they watch more carefuly.
Me, I usually watch sports (Reds in the summer and Colts in the Winter along with a little college basketball) I also like to watch Shows off of the History or Discovery Channel or National Geographic.
The only regular show that I watch often is CSI (the original, I dont watch the other two), I also tend to watch House on reruns but now they have started to repeat the shows so I dont even watch that any more. but I still haven seent he episode where Cutner commits suicide so I still have this gaping hole in my "House" timeline. grrrr.
So every week I usually watch 1 hour of guarranteed programming and then anywhere from 0-12 more aditional hours depending upon how many Reds games or interesting History/discovery/nat geo chalnnel show are on.

House interested me until they became too caught up in their immoral ratings if you know what I mean. ;)
I also like to watch Shows off of the History or Discovery Channel or National Geographic.
I also enjoyed these shows, but I soon realized that they often misinterpretted facts and produced faulty conclusions that I began to not trust these shows. When I lost my trust in their fact-gathering skills, the shows quickly lost appeal to me.
