Title: Type specific cards?
Post by: slugfencer on November 15, 2020, 06:45:27 PM
Can we make cards that are specifically used for certain formats?

For example: a new discarding deck card:
The ability discards 2 cards from a type 1 deck
The ability discards 4 cards from a type 2 deck.
The ability discards 3 cards from each opponent's deck in a multiplayer format.

Doing this would make some cards more viable and powerful in different formats.
I know we kinda do this where some cards are just more powerful than others in certain formats, but this would be very obvious about trying to boost a format.

I know that would be a lot of wording on a card so if that is a problem you could just make the type 2 card and state on the card that the special ability works only for type 2. (Discards 4 from deck).

Thoughts?

Not sure if it's good to specify the category in the ability, like saying "Type 1" or "Type 2", but I think abilities with conditions like, "If you have more than one opponent, do X" or "If opponent has more than 50 cards in deck, discard their top 4. Otherwise, discard their top 2" could work. Basically I think everything should have to reference particular things within the game itself and not be "meta", since "meta" things are more subject to change in the future.

I'd argue there are a few of these in the game already. CoW Confusion is the big one that comes to mind, being played very differently in T1 vs T2. Beyond that, lots of cards that specify "an" opponent can be used very cheekily against players uninvolved in the current battle (this works especially well with instead clauses).

I agree with Jaylor that specifying category in the ability isn't ideal, even if for no other reason than card space. There could be some interesting ideas around more soft scaling, though - a card with an X value of "total Redeemed Souls" would be less powerful in T1 than T2, and more powerful still in multiplayer.

What, you don't think someone would try to banish all three copies of Legion of Angels in my T1 deck??

Lol Of all the Redemption players I know, you would probably be the most likely person I'd expect to do that.  :P
