We're going to go ahead and call the race at this point...and Evil Character is the winner! 8)
EDIT* Nominations must be made by 11:59 PM CST on Tuesday, 1-16.
Here are the rules/guidelines for submitting nominations for the Evil Character name.
1. Each person may submit up to 3 names either by posting or sending me a PM (I will start a new thread once the card type voting is officially closed)
2. Names must be Biblical (I know we have extra-Biblical characters in the game, but this card will need to have a direct Scripture reference)
3. Names must be for characters considered "Evil" in Redemption terms (i.e. we're not making an evil King David). If it's a character with some ambiguity (King Saul, Joab, etc) we'll figure that out later.
4. If it's a character with a repeated name, be sure to specify which character you are referring to (i.e. "Saul" could be the king or the NT Saul)
5. Please do not "campaign" for certain characters on this thread...you may do that elsewhere, but I want to keep this thread clear for submissions only.
6. Based on the number of entries, I will create a poll with the most frequent submissions. I'm not sure what to expect for how many different entries we'll have, but I'm thinking we'll do at most 15 final entries to vote on. If we have a handful of those that are close together in votes, we'll do a second round of voting with just those.
I think that's it for now! 8)

2. Names must be Biblical (I know we have extra-Biblical characters in the game, but this card will need to have a direct Scripture reference)
3. Names must be for characters considered "Evil" in Redemption terms
So are we allowed to submit generic evil characters like "Foreign Archer" or "Foreign Raiders" based on this criteria? Or should we stick with unique characters that are named, either by their actual name or allegory (The Watchman, etc.)?
Maybe for generic characters, it should be recommended to submit a verse as well so players can see where the character comes from.
-
Generic Characters would be acceptable with an accompanying scripture verse for reference purposes.
-
Athaliah
Absalom
Eglon, King of Moab
-
Absalom
Abner
Sones of Anak (Numbers 13:28. 33 Nevertheless, the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there. There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”)
-
Prince of this World
-
Jannes
Rapha / The Father of Giants
Alexander the Coppersmith*
*Coopersmith
-
Alexander the Coppersmith (desperately in need of an updated version with an ability and would be a great antagonist to the Paul promo and the RoJ Heroes)
Orpah (or we can go with Oprah, the false prophetess, as an evil character) :rollin: (In all seriousness, she could use an updated version and would go well with the contemporary Ruth theme)
Peninnah (a character that doesn’t have a card yet and was really nasty to Hannah. She would be a great fit for a Samuel-themed mini set. I made her card some time ago; it can be seen on the New Card Ideas topic for an idea how she and the other Samuel-themed characters could work).
-
Abner
King Jehu
Emperor Nero
-
Levitation
Abner
Alexander the coppersmith
-
Barabbas
Absalom
The Ten Sons of Haman (Esther 9: 10 is probably the best reference. There may be little information on them but they could also be divided individually since they are all named. Could make Persians a viable defense which would be awesome)
-
King Agag, an Amalekite. We have about half of an Amalekite in the game right now (Ammy Slave is actually Egyptian); even though we don't really need any more brown themes, the Amalekites have enough significance to warrant a theme (at least as much as antediluvians).
Absalom as an anti-throne card.
Jannes, for reasons Isaac went into already.
-
I know the last few sets have boosted animals but I still think they're behind a little so my 3 picks are for animals.
Of course
Leviathan
Job 41:1-34 Can you draw out Leviathan with a hook, Or snare his tongue with a line which you lower?
Possessed pigs
Mark 5:11-13 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.
The Big fish
Jonah 1:17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
-
King Artaxerxes
The Wisemen
Persian solidiers
When I mention the Wisemen , I am referring to the wisemen that were jealous of Daniel and made the king sign the decree.
-
King Artaxexes
Peninniah
Rapha/"The Giant" (depending on translation): the father of Goliath, Ishbibenob, Lahmi, Saph, and The Twelve-Fingered Giant (2 Samuel 21:18-24)
[updated]
-
King Artaxerxes
The Wisemen
Persian solidiers
When I mention the Wisemen , I am referring to the wisemen that were jealous of Daniel and made the king sign the decree.
RC777, not that we couldn't do another version named "Persian Wisemen", but that group is represented by the card "Persian Presidents." :)
-
My picks 8)
Rapha, Father of Giants
Ishmaelite Merchants (the ones who bought Joseph and took him to Egypt)
Brood of Vipers (Pharisees)
-
The Rich Young Ruler
What brigade would this guy be?
-
The Rich Young Ruler
What brigade would this guy be?
If he gets picked that wouldn't be for me to decide... ::)
However, I could see him staying in Brown or possibly being moved to Gray or Gold.
-
The Seven Sons of Sceva. They could have a better card.
Alternatively, Athaliah.
-
Two Thumbs up for Rapha, Father of Giants.
I'd also like to submit Absalom and Amasa
-
Leviathan
-
I'm astounded (and also glad) that a certain EC hasn't been mentioned yet.
Que?
Actual submission is Midianite Army.
-
Dual Alignment Jehu
-
Just realized I hadn't put a deadline for this phase...
Nominations for card name must be made by 11:59 CST on Tuesday, 1-16.
I will allow people to update their votes at any time before the deadline, but please make a new post (or send me a PM) to let me know you have updated your vote.
-
I updated my selections to:
King Artaxexes
Peninniah
Rapha, Father of Giants (the father of Goliath, Ishbibenob, Lahmi, Saph, and The Twelve-Fingered Giant) (2 Samuel 21:18-24)
-
1. Each person may submit up to 3 names either by posting or sending me a PM (I will start a new thread once the card type voting is officially closed)
If I submit the same name three times, will it count three times for getting into the poll? If yes, Que, Que, Que.
1) Cushanrishathaim, King of Mesopotamia (Judges 3:8)
2) Diklah (Genesis 10:27)
3) Meshillemoth (2 Chronicles 28:12)
-
For #1, you mean this guy? ;)

King Kedarlomer of Elam - Genesis 14:4 (my favorite because he had other kings who were subject to him...aka he was a bad dude!)
King Amraphel of Shinar - Genesis 14:1
King Arioch of Ellasar - Genesis 14:1
King Tidal of Goyim - Genesis 14:1 (Thanks Four_Corners5)
-
What makes you so special that you get 4 nominees? ;)
-
Cheaters - Lev 19.13 NKJV ‘You shall not cheat your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of him who is hired shall not remain with you all night until morning.

Cheaters - Lev 19.13 NKJV ‘You shall not cheat your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of him who is hired shall not remain with you all night until morning.

Either way it's been added to the submissions list... ::)

Hmmmmm... I thought that card referred to the son of Robert "Bob" Cushan and Nancy "Nancy" Risathaim (explaining the apostrophe) whose given name was King.
OK I officially change my first vote . I now have...
1) Rapha, Father of Giants
2) Diklah (Genesis 10:27)
3) Meshillemoth (2 Chronicles 28:12)
-
So far we have 39 submissions by 27 people.
Keep em coming or give a "Second" to a submission you would like to see as well! 8)

I have never participated in an event where I have had to replace my team mate in the middle of a National's Tournament team game because he decided to QUIT to participate in another event he deemed more important than FINISHING what he talked me into playing. That would have been against the rules. #stillbitteratEmjayBee83

I don't think Rapha works as a submission because the direct scripture reference doesn't mention Rapha or Raphah as a person. I believe it means giant in Hebrew. Then we are left with a card called "Giant, Father of Giants".
-
Sources I've read said that it could also be translated as "tall" which means it was probably a nickname.
-
According to biblehub.com, the Hebrew is transliterated "hā-rā-p̄āh" and the Strong's number is 7497 "Rapha" (Proper Name).
links:
http://biblehub.com/text/2_samuel/21-18.htm
http://biblehub.com/hebrew/7497.htm
Here's the word in various popular translations:
NASB (the translation that Redemption now uses) - "the giant"
KJV - "the giant"
NKJV - "the giant"
ESV - "the giants"
NIV - "Rapha"
I feel like Rapha could work, but perhaps the name could just be "The Giant"
-
The Hebrew names רפא (Rapha) and רפה (Raphah) are really two different names, but the verbs that these names are derived off yield words that can be spelled either way; with an א or with a ה. It is therefore not clear from which verb our respective names come, or what they would have specifically meant.
And to make matters worse: it's not clear how many different men named Rapha(h) there are in the Bible. Here are the candidates:
1. Possibly the patriarch of the gigantic Rephaim. The Rephaim were a tall and numerous people, of which king Og of Bashan was the last one. Their name (רפאים) is a plural form of רפא, and that word may either describe their nature, or their patriarch. We don't know. But:
-In 1 Chronicles 20:4-8 we read about the battles of Israel against the Philistine giants of Gath, of whom it is said that they were נולדו להרפא; "born onto the rapha" (with an א).
-In 2 Samuel 21:15-22 we read the same story, and in this version we read that these giants of Gath were בילידי הרפה; "of the born-ones (=children) of the rapah" (with a ה).
The word rapha(h) is in both cases preceded by what seems the definite article ה (he), which suggests that rapha is a noun. However, in Judges 1:20 the text speaks of בני הענק or 'sons of the Anak', which supplies enough precedent to consider the reference to the Rapha of Gath a patriarchal personal name. In English, the NAS, KJV, JSP, ASV and Young translations all choose to interpret this word by implication, and read "the giant". By contrast, the NIV reads here the personal name Rapha and the Darby translation has Raphah. But that option carelessly omits the ה (he) in front of it. If we're dealing with a personal name here, it would be Harapha(h). The problem with that is that this assumed name would come from a root הרפ and that doesn't occur in Hebrew. In other words: we don't know and all are guessing.
2. The fifth son of Benjamin (1 Chronicles 8:2 — spelled רפא). The Chronicler's Benjaminite son-list is very different from the one submitted in Genesis 46:21, and this is perhaps because the Chronicler listed the Benjaminite families that were still around at the time of writing, and listed them according to their prominence within the tribe.
3. A son of Moza of Benjamin, who descended from king Saul's son Jonathan (1 Chronicles 8:37 — spelled רפה). In 1 Chronicles 9:43 this man is called רפיה (Rephaiah).
-
In other words: we don't know and all are guessing.
So I think we should lean towards something more specifically referenced in the Bible. Sticking with the "giant category" Sons of Anak or King Og of bashan would be really cool, but "The Giant" seems a bit bland for a community created card.

Brood of Vipers (Pharisees from Mark 3:6)
Cozbi, Daughter of Zur (Numbers 25:15, the female Zimri, son of Salu "banded" with)
Beelzebub, King of Demons (Matthew 12:24)
-
Jezebel (Rev 2:20) (would probably be a Heretic)
False Jews (Rev 2:9, 3:9) (Definately are Heretics)
Emperor Nero
-
Since others are submitting four names instead of three, I’d like to add a fourth to my other three:
Og, king of Bashan
-
Jezebel (Rev 2:20) (would probably be a Heretic)
False Jews (Rev 2:9, 3:9) (Definately are Heretics)
Emperor Nero
False Priests (the verse on the Priests one... maybe make this into series or something.)
Guardian is only going to take three suggestions per person, so if you have a least favorite, you may want remove it.
Since others are submitting four names instead of three, I’d like to add a fourth to my other three:
Og, king of Bashan
And if Guardian sticks to his rule of three per person, is Og the one you *do not* want to be considered?

Peninnah

I will be sticking with 3 per person.

Sons of Belial. Judges 19:22
The sons come from a time when there is no king over Israel and how their actions have grave consequences for the tribe of Benjamin
Saul of Tarsus. Acts 9:1. Saul(Paul) was a persecutor of Christians in/around Jerusalem and sought to go after the ones hiding in Damascus
Certain men of Judaea. Acts 15:1 A time before the church gathered together to set basic tenets for new believers to live by----- this could be better considered a evil enhancement card as opposed to a evil character.
The unbelieving Jews. Acts 14:2 Jews that traveled after Paul(who was on his missionary trips) and stirred up people (Jew and Gentile both) against the belief that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah and also accused Paul of blasphemy.
-
I posted a comment earlier saying Leviathan, but I added the references to it and added a few other cards (all Job references ::) )
Leviathan: Job 3:8 or 41:1
The Accuser: Job 1:6 NLT
Maggots: Job 7:5
-
Would maggots be an animal? Lol

King Jehu.

Which three of these are you most in favor of?
-
1) Saul of Tarsus (NT)
2) Sons of Belial (OT)
3) The unbelieving Jews (NT)
(The certain men of Judaea) could become an evil enhancement card to be used by the heretic faction/false doctrine. These men believed unless you followed the law of Moses, you could not become a Christian.
Personally I'd like to see both a OT evil character card and a NT evil character card. I think that's what happened last year and it would make the choosing of which evil character to make easier. My personal opinion here.

Lot of good submissions, so I didn't bother.
Some of my favorites...
Maggots, animal
Leviathan, animal
The Ostrich, animal
EDIT: I did like the Father of Giants idea too, so that would probably replace the Ostrich as my 3rd.
Apparently, I would really like an expansion of the animal theme.
