Title: Persian cards
Post by: Josh on July 09, 2015, 01:09:07 PM
Just off the top of my head.

King Ahasuerus
6/11 Brown EC, WC
"Search deck for a Brown set-aside enhancement.  Each player must search deck for a female and play a female from hand.  Cannot be negated."
Esther 1:1

Ahasuerus' Banquet
0/0 Brown EE, TC
X = Number of your Persians in play and set-aside, limit one per set-aside area
"Place in your set-aside:  You may move your Persians between territory and set-aside at any time.  If an opponent draws because of his special ability, you may set aside the top 3 cards of your deck (put lost souls in play instead), or take a card in set-aside to hand."
Esther 1:3

Citadel of Susa
Evil fortress
Holds one Esther artifact
"When you play this, search deck for a Daniel or Esther site.  OT Brown set-aside abilities gain "Regardless of protection".  Protect your Brown Persians from opponents' decrease abilities."
Esther 1:2

Also needs a scripture reference.

The only reference I can find to cats in anything even remotely related to the Bible is the apocryphal book of Baruch 6:21 which says...
"Upon their bodies and heads sit bats, swallows, and birds, and the cats also."

*Scratches head and wonders if cats really are evil*

It’s official. Cats are not Biblical.

Interesting. I think I like it. Haman's been in an interesting position for a while where he's good but there's generally better options, so he doesn't make the cut. I wonder if he'll get a reprint - with all this Persian support I'm not sure he needs one, but I could see either way.

Building the Persian support even more is this relatively powerful card. Obviously related to how committed you are to the Persian theme.

Here's a thought: what if this card was renamed "Haman's Plot"? It's basically the same idea and solves the issue of trying to reprint the old one into something balanced in the future. It would also prevent both this and the Patriarch's monstrosity from being used in the same T2 deck. Why not?

This card started on last year's list (yes, it was in FoM) but got pushed to this year where we have more Persian support. It had a similar but yet drastically different ability that didn't quite line up with the direction we want to push the game. The card title was Genocide at that time. As the ability morphed into what you see today we felt that title was no longer the best description of what the card does. Several titles were discussed, including Haman's Plot, before the current one was settled upon.

Just saying, that's obviously a good idea and one that some of our team wanted, but ultimately not what the majority chose.

Awesome, we finally have King Darius in the game! Now we just need King Xerxes/Ahaseurus and King Cyrus!  :)

Tiny grammatical issue: the period belongs inside the “Persian” quotes.

Yes, in this case. We’re not British.

YES! (Seriously, this was basically my reaction to seeing King Darius and then confirming he was indeed Daniel)

I am concerned the CBN Taking is a bit strong, maybe throw an instead on there if you want to keep it, or drop it to CBP or or drop it entirely. Then again, it is somewhat specific, it has to be a city or an evil human warrior, which is only going to work some of the time.

Tiny grammatical issue: the period belongs inside the “Persian” quotes.

I actually prefer it on the outside, because I find it silly to put external punctuation inside the quotes, because we aren't supposed to read the quotes as "Persian." we are reading it as "Persian". As someone who's taken programing knows there's a big difference between those two things.

I've tested Darius a fair amount and have not found the CBN taking to be too strong. Because it's an optional trigger he has to remain in play at the end of the battle for the take of a City or evil human warrior to work, assuming there is even a valid target. He has sizable stats and a band ability so he doesn't often get initiative. My opponent's always seem to (wisely) focus on removing him ASAP. In all my test games I've gotten between 0-2 takes from him, never more.

I understand the initial reaction, but in practice it hasn't worked out the way you suspect.

Ah I didn’t realize that he has to live for the Take to work.  Seems fine then.

Admittedly, in my excitement I completely missed the "After battle". Yeah, I'm good.

I also didn't realize Darius had to stay in play.

Does this mean that Moabite Marauders is next-to-useless? I've had it ruled that in order for them to take/banish an enhancement, the enhancement must be in battle during resolution, and since
A. removing the hero removes the good enhancements played off them and B. you can't take cards you already control, it really only works when he loses or stalemates. Based on this, it sounds like he only works in a stalemate/withdraw.

The card, for reference:

Moabite Marauders works as you describe. While you won’t take an Enhancement every battle, it’ll require some work, I would hardly call it worthless. Even if it’s only CBI banding, that’s solid.

That's disappointing to hear. I played Marauders all summer and nobody called me out on that. While it's not bad, a 3/5 CBI band isn't worth OT soul unity, especially with all the options grey has.
