Title: Need identifier ideas
Post by: The Guardian on April 04, 2017, 03:30:59 PM
I'm wanting to make some Evil Character cards that are non-human, non-demon and non-animal (basically like Madness and Doubt). I'm trying to think if there's an identifier term that could be used to describe such a character instead of having to put "Not human, not demon, not animal" in the identifier line.

Ready, set, go!  8)

Sin

Not quite what I'm looking for...Doubt and Madness aren't sins for example.

Ailment

That's a little too specific but you might be on the right track.

Scribe

I don't quite understand how Scribe would fit that, can you elaborate?

Demon and animal are both only put if the EC meets that term so you don't necessarily *have* to put "not demon, not animal" in the identifiers as it's assumed they aren't those if the words aren't present.

If you're looking for a term that can encapsulate "characters" that are not human, demon, or animal it really depends on the idea behind them. Doubt and Madness are both emotional/mental states but that doesn't mean all abstract ECs will always be that (depending on your ideas).

Here are some general ideas for terms:
-Abstract
-Non-corporeal (though angel and demon could also qualify as this)
-Metaphysical
-Construct

Of these I think Abstract is my favorite as it can represent a lot of things and is the most self-defining.

Abstract concept

We could go green lantern on them and call it an "emotional construct".  ;)

Malady or infirmity. Not sure if your trying to have a term that encompasses both good and evil alignments or not

It's more along the lines of "Concept" as it could possibly apply to good characters as well, but even "Concept" doesn't quite capture the sense of what I'm going for.

Peace (as a good character) and Chaos (as an evil character) would be some examples.

Perfect example! If we decided to let Kindness be a Hero, what would it's identifier be? (Besides Fruit of the Spirit)

A force, maybe?

You could go with Abstraction. Or Trait. Archetype. Meta-Character. Ideal.

There's really also the question of how long the term can be, given that shorter is better even for identifiers (if not moreso than special abilities). Like, "Metaphysical Representation" might fit but is incredibly long and clunky.

Indeed, the goal is to save space from "Not human. Not Demon." (Since they wouldn't be in the form of animals, that's not as necessary to specify--but they could be physically represented by a human or demon like in the case of Doubt).

What do you all think of using "Symbolic" -- as in "Symbolic character" (which is how it would appear in a potential REG glossary entry)?

I'd support this. Easy to understand and fairly accurate.

Since we literally just came up with this idea of defining characters as "Symbolic" a few moments ago with everyone's help, we don't have an exact definition written yet, but Symbolic characters will essentially be representations of the things I was mentioning earlier (Doubt, Madness, and now as you see, Death). Symbolic characters will be non-human, non-demon, non-animal and will likely have no gender.

As such, we plan to change the designation of Death and Hades (WA) from "Demon" to "Symbolic."

A full definition will be added to the REG along with other necessary entries upon the release of RoJ.

I assume Doubt and Madness will also be updated to be considered Symbolic characters?

Also, I'm not sure the identifier needs to specify that only the character form is TC as it's on the right-hand side of the card (which seems like sufficient explanation to me). I like the idea of doing that with the class symbol.

LOVE this card and all the ideas with it!!!!

We really need an updated card builder, though, with all the fun and new stuff in this set! (double name cards, class icons on the right side....)

We wanted to err on the side of clarity as it could be misconstrued that it is also a TC enhancement, especially with younger and less experienced players who are not completely familiar with the territory class concept.

Also, if we make a dual alignment character that is territory class (for both alignments) we didn't want to have to put two icons on the card to express that.

What's the reasoning for beasts being demons and not symbolic?
