St. Ignatius was a disciple of John the Evangelist ("...the disciple whom Jesus loved.")
Ignatius was presumably martyred (eaten by lions) at the Coliseum, perhaps between 98 and 117 AD.

Actually, that picture looks like he's using his ninja moves on the lions. He does seem unbothered by the lion gnawing on his shoulder.

Well, that's the way Ignatius is depicted in Byzantine iconography. Unfortunately I couldn't find a photograph of him on the internet. :-)
