Title: A Call for a Librarian
Post by: Minister Polarius on December 29, 2011, 12:27:50 PM
As awesome as a card with that title would be if I found a verse for it, this isn't a card thread XD

In a recent thread, people were asking why I stopped cataloging cards when RC came out. The answer is: with the increase in card volume, I don't have time. So I am looking for a volunteer to compile a gallery like the one requested. I'll sticky the thread and delete any posts on it that aren't gallery posts, and that will free up some room as I can unsticky the 2 galleries up there once they're condensed. The only caveat is that I want serious cards only; no Spartans, no Little Ponies, no RLK. The Cactus card creation team has been increasingly paying attention to this board, and it would be nice to have potential ideas in one place for them to browse.

It seems that Somekittens was already volunteering on the other thread, so he's got first crack at it if he wants it, but feel free to post here if you're interested in taking on the job should he decline.

I'll take it!  Though I would like to have my mod powers extended to this board, as it would make the job much easier.

I can't make people mods, you'll have to ask Prof U for that one.

As long as you create the thread, and lock it, then mod powers shouldn't make any difference.  You just unlock it whenever you want to add more posts of cards, then lock it again when you're done.

I can't make people mods, you'll have to ask Prof U for that one.
Actually, I don't think I can do that either.  I think that would be Schaef's department :)

Turns out Schaef can't do it either, it's Rob's department. But wait! Rob doesn't have that ability either! Looks like it's time to ask Jesus.

Jesus, can SomeKittens be a mod?

I think it's kind of ridiculous that a locked thread has been unlocked by a mod a posted in 3 times now. Talk about silencing the community.

#1 - I posted on that thread because I felt like there was an unresolved issue there.  However, it has since been resolved by this thread, so that thread is no longer necessary.

#2 - I think it's kind of ridiculous that a forum member who has been here as long as yourself and has been as controversial as yourself (at times) would accuse anyone of silencing the community :)

#3 - I also think it's kind of ridiculous that you would take a thread that is solely here to empower the community by opening up the opportunity for someone to be in charge of the archiving of these creative community driven ideas, and turn it into a chance for you to criticize people for silencing the community.

Regardless of who it's coming from, Alex does make a severe accusation that I think needs to be looked at.

The accusation may be severe, but that doesn't mean that it is anywhere near valid.  As I already pointed out, this thread is here to allow further discussion on the archiving topic, and to enable even greater community input.

The message boards are a privilege, not a right.

Before I go post all over the place, here's my plan:
There'll be three threads, one for entries, one for funny cards, and one for serious cards.  The latter two will be sorted by brigade and locked.  Only I (or a mod) will add/modify those.  The "entry" thread will be open, and anyone can post in it.  If an entry has +3 or more, it is archived in the appropriate thread.  I'd rather have the community choose rather than "SomeKittens chooses which cards are special enough."

Thoughts?

Is Pol's decision that the thread had run it's course not good enough for you to agree? If you don't want to trust his judgement, I question why he is a mod at all.

If you meant "vocalling encouraging others to find the answer through less standard practices than normal board members might normally choose to use" by controversial, then yes, I am fairly controversial. But I'm not really sure that's even true.

Would you like me to start a new thread about it that brings more people into it? This is actually probably a more discrete method of questioning the choices made by mods than posting a topic such as "Are Mods overstepping their bounds? A discussion about the power of lock-editing and it's effects on the voice of the community".

If you choose to do the last thing Alex, it should be done in APA format with appropriate citations  ;D

I would use Turabian normally (I like it's functioning better) but yeah, I would probably need to conduct thorough research.

Is Pol's decision that the thread had run it's course not good enough for you to agree? If you don't want to trust his judgement, I question why he is a mod at all.
Pol felt like that thread was likely to only result in pointless criticism (kinda like where you seem to be trying to take this thread, now that the main point of this thread has already been accomplished).  I just wanted to make sure that the archiving project would continue on.  I talked to Pol about it, and he agreed, leading to this thread.  This whole thing has been resolved at this point, and Pol is doing a good job.

If you feel like mods are NOT doing a good job, and you have evidence that points to that conclusion, then you should probably PM me with it and we can have that discussion privately at first.  If you are not satisfied with that private conversation, then by all means start a thread about it.  Just because you and I disagree sometimes, it doesn't mean that I don't value your input.  I'd be glad to hear from you about this.

I think Alex is trying to say that he feels the criticism was not pointless, and that the lockage only furthers his point.

I don't understand why you had to unlock the thread to do that. If you look at the develop of the thread, there were issues, there was tension, Pol made a definative statement about the issue, and locked it. RDT then entered to state his side (since he had been called out as well in some aspects) and then locked the case. Then, you inexplicably enter two seperate times to first essentially restate something that Pol has already said and then essentially bump this thread. I question why either of those issues was ever needed to be publically stated on that thread. Why did you need to just restate what Pol said? Why did you need to point that this thread now exists? It seems to me continuing to post on that thread either 1. appears to undermine Pol (and to a lesser extent RDT)'s authority in that subforum or 2. create the appearance mods need the last word. Neither of those statement are positive for the moderation team.

I think that there's been several previous threads and discussion about it. I can only assume the same discussions occured during backdoor politicking by the moderators, so I don't really see the need to rehash discussions that didn't go anywhere and haven't produced results despite statements that progess would be made.

Let me clear this up to start with.  I didn't unlock anything, I just posted.

you inexplicably enter two seperate times...continuing to post on that thread either 1. appears to undermine Pol (and to a lesser extent RDT)'s authority in that subforum or 2. create the appearance mods need the last word.
Wow, that is the opposite message that I wanted to send.  Actually the locking of the thread was reported by a forum member, which is originally why I got involved.  My posting after Pol and RDT was actually to support them as mods in their decision to lock the thread.

Then another forum member mentioned in the Trumpet Blast that they wanted to respond to my post.  Thus I added the 2nd post directing them to where they could do that.

Really, this whole thing appears to be a misunderstanding.  I apologize if my actions confused you, but there really isn't any big backdoor politicking going on that I know of.  And again I would welcome you to share with me what statements were made about progress without any results produced.  I really don't know what you are talking about.

Underwood, you raised a solid point in the other thread that made me realize I had misunderstood part of what Pol had said. Specifically, your comment referring to the "100 random Spartans and their weapons," which I didn't realize at the time was a catch-all for "silly cards". I simply misunderstood part of what Pol's argument was. Now, I would have loved to have been able to slightly revise my position in that thread, but I was unable to due to the thread being locked. The point I'm trying to make here is that, at least to some extent, I disagree with your reasoning for why you agreed the thread should be locked. I think there was potentially some fruitful discussion that unceremoniously cut short. I won't pretend that I know why Pol closed the thread, however, the way it came off (and again, I am not saying that this was why he did it) was that he was getting the last word and that was that. I won't speak for Alex, but for me personally, that's where my frustration came from, and I still stick by my original comments in the other thread, though I meant no disrespect to either Pol or RDT with my comments, and if I accidentally offended either of them, I apologize.

At any rate, it looks like that thread is a moot point now, since Kittens has agreed to undertake this project.

I can understand why you would feel that way.  But I felt like I had two choices.  One was to unlock the thread, which would have severely undermined another mod's decision and authority.  The other was to support that mod in their decision, and point people to a new thread where they could have that potentially fruitful discussion.  I believe that I made the right choice, and stand by it.

At any rate, it looks like that thread is a moot point now, since Kittens has agreed to undertake this project.
I agree.  In fact, now that SK has taken on the project, and even begun it already, I don't know that either that thread or this one has much further point.  Hopefully we can all call it a day.  And hopefully next time people will give me the benefit of the doubt when I make a decision that doesn't make sense to them, so that I don't have to go through all the nitty-gritty, to show that I had the best intentions.  It's not like I have a habbit of double-posting on locked threads (in fact, I think this is the first time I've ever done it).  So if I do something like that, hopefully people realize that I probably have a good reason for it.

Mods have the ability to post on locked threads without unlocking them.  I think most of the mods don't realize this.

This thread is indeed still open, but hopefully those who have been posting on it will spend more time and energy submitting new ideas for SK to catalog than arguing about whether the Professor was right or wrong about me being right or wrong :)
