So, it was a quite an unexpected placement, but a great blessing to have placed 1st in booster!  LoC has been a great way to play booster as it does what the card designers designed it to do: play booster well by limiting certain themes/brigades in the set. Having played LoC booster many times now and LoC constructed a few times, I’ve found that the best offense and defense (IMO and experience) is Postexilic & Royal heroes and brown evil characters. This has been proven when I placed 3rd in booster at Nats 2020, this year by placing first, and other times I’ve played those same themes in other booster drafts (and from what I’ve seen from others who use those same themes).

So, without further adieu, here is a quick break down of this year’s deck. I drafted the brown evil characters first (mainly Jehoiakim and Jehoiachin, and as many copies of them as I can) as those are the most reliable blockers for booster. They are chump block guys who have won me and other players multiple battles. Then, I may either draft heroes or brown enhs that help continue the chump block strategy, such as Solomon’s Oppression and Treason! Treason!  Then, I draft royal heroes and/or Postexilic. Of course, any of this varies based upon what I have in hand. Maybe I want Royal Parade over a hero or blocker; or maybe I simply can’t turn down an ultra rare just for its value. But, the above is how I tend to draft.

Another main component to my drafting is soul gen. If you’ve played booster draft enough, chances are, you’ve experienced soul drought.  However, this can be mitigated if you draft cards that help soul gen, which is vital for booster.  In this deck, I had multiple ways: two copies of Matthan, a Hooked and Shackled (which I can play in territory on one of my good or evil kings of Judah to soul gen pre-attack), and Jehoiachin’s star ability. There are others, like Josiah, but I didn’t draft any of him as he never entered my hands.

The offense had plenty of interrupts and I could gain inish by attacking with a low numbered guys (like Jeshua) so I could use interrupts to interrupt any brown chump blockers’ soul protecting abilities. I could also band a lot with my and/or my opponent’s heroes for whatever purpose I needed (I put Marriage Covenant and Oath of Purity under Support above, but I mainly used them for the enh side).

I found that I barely could use my evil brown soul protecting enhs as many times my opponents would have a meek hero in battle; the same goes for Led Astray, which out of all 7 games I successfully used one time. It was the brown blockers that did the job for me.

The Assyrian splash helped me a few times when I was in a pinch. But I mainly used Assyrian camp as a fort as fodder for Jehoichin’s give ability.

We only had 5 super packs to draft from so there wasn’t much choice left over for other cards to select.  As you can see, I didn’t even have a reserve as I didn’t really need it. In hindsight, I would have put one of the Treasons in it so I could get it with Solomon’s Oppression or Ahaziah.

If I had to redo my draft I would have chosen another card over Led Astray and Sling Stones (Sling Stones is such a weird card to pull off. You can’t use it in SI, and if the hero is equipped with it and is removed from battle, it can’t be used as it has to be in battle).  There were no ultra rares in my packs.

That’s the short and sweet of it. I had some great games: some close, some not so close and two ties. No losses though, which was nice. All of my opponents were great sports. One of the best (and kind of annoying) games was my first game with Josh P (who ended up taking 2nd in booster).  We literally kept blocking back and forth with brown guys, and it wasn’t until about 10 minutes or so left that we actually started rescuing souls lol. We ended up timing out with a 2/2 tie. I love playing Josh because he keeps me on my toes as he’s a very analytical and smart player.  A shout out to all of my opponents who built cool and challenging decks and played very well. 👍

One last thing, I was very proud of my 12-year-old son, Brayden B., who placed 7th in booster!  Every year I see him getting better and better as a player.  I didn’t even get a full 5 soul win when I played him!

Two copies of Jeshua and you placed first. Coincidence? I think not.

Ha yep. His topdeck didn’t get used and I barely used his band. It was his 2 toughness that came in handy the most, especially in my game with Dario. I kept getting inish. 😁

By the way, I’m going to start calling you Jaydenshua. 😂

I am. Just haven’t had time to do the write up and such. I wrote/posted all of the above when I was flying back from Nats, so I had some downtime then.
