2013 T1-2P 1st place deck

So I gotta say I had not seen the 2008 deck prior to running this deck. Being relatively new to the game I am not familiar with a lot of the history of the game.   I first realized the power of the hand control when Gabe destroyed me in the single elimination tourney Chris hosted. I loved the deck and wanted to try it out myself. I discussed the potential of me running it at nats with gabe the night before and he kindly obliged.   I changed only few cards in the deck with some encouraging from Matt Townsend and Chris Ericson. Matt really pushed me to add Herod's Temple and Lampstand which I believe was the difference between 1st and about 10th.  Chris seconded that opinion so I went for it.

I will be the first to admit after my frustration with Foreign Wives being OP I find it interesting that a deck not running her won Nats this year.

I will attempt to explains little more later, I admit I am not good at remembering specific plays or games or even opponents but ill do my best to put something up containing some play by play stuff.

I also love the fact that this is a defensively-tilted balanced deck.  Very nice.

It seems much like last year the winning deck just took the competition by surprise.

Rogue decks always have a considerable advantage at top events due to it being non-meta in nature, therefore no one is teching against it.

This is the same reason I was able to take t2-2p last year. The rogue deck is fun to go with.

Only 3 of the top 8 ran naz so I found that interesting.

Congrats on the win man.

Why no Balaam's?

The meta offense ran strong angel and captain. Also the FBTN Auto Moses bands are stopped with scattered which is just a better version.

Balaams may belong when not playing against the angels

I noticed that as well, but you have to consider the deck is only 51 cards, so space is very limited. Especially for a Gen/Rom deck, as there are so many super tasty cards that can go into it. But Balaams D is one of the most powerful tools Grey has ever had, and it would be the very last thing I would ever cut. I also do not understand its exclusion. The only thing I can think of is to have more consistency with Entrapping Pharisees by using a NT battle winner instead.

If you run this deck again I think it might be a idea to consider running a 56 card version of the deck. With the extra five cards you could easily give the deck a little more end game/stopping power.

I don't think you quite understand how the deck works in the current meta. Currently, there is a ton of pressure to play as many cards down as you can (Sorrow, Vain, Tibbles) because of the general meta defense, which is some variation of those 3 cards with support as liked (usually pharisees). Lots of people just toss stuff down and onto the field and roll with 4-7 card hands when they pass turn and tend to use dominants right away. Hand Control has a good matchup against that because its really easy to limit the hand when the hand is already being limited by the playstyle of the meta in many cases. I actually don't think the deck needs more end power because to me its power is derived from limiting the opponent to the top 3 cards of the deck on any given turn + the one or two cards you keep in your hand. That's just me though.

I personally feel like if I would change anything I would drop Emp Vit for another EC; perhaps The Terrifying Beast.

A Genesis offense without Jacob? A Roman defense without RDJ?  ::)

The deck is 50 cards and needs to be to keep up with all he fast decks in the meta. I ran it at 56 up until last week when I could finally figure out what to take out to cut it down. I plan to start a separate post about the evolution of the deck and its weaknesses.

Hey Gabe I may have found a weakness For the deck. Me and Josiah met up and played 3 games after Nats. 15-7 my favor. (Played my competitive deck - no teching)
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

I haven't looked too carefully at this deck list, but I'm tickled pink that Genesis & Rome won another National tournament. Congratulations!

Back at WI states and MW Regs I debated whether or not to use a deck very similar to this and ended up not doing that. Main reason was that deck was stuck at 56 cards because I couldn't decide what to cut. It had Foreign Wives, Canaan, Asher, and Job Overcomes in it to set up some fun plays, and Jubilee + Abe's Descend + Golgotha to (potentially) get back Heavy Taxes forever.

Seems strange that there's only 1 artifact and it's not I am Holy (that, Chariots, and Darius' Decree were the only arts I had in mine). I love the inclusion of Cup o' Wrath and Spirit o' Temptation, but I'd take Jacob over Benjamin any day for RTC preblock...

Props to you! 8)

I didn't see this earlier, but I wanted to point out that any combos involving Foreign Wives, Canaan, and either Asher/Job Overcomes/Micah/etc. don't work.  In each case, the "X" identifier is based on the number of evil brigades your opponent owns, not controls.  And since your opponent doesn't own Foreign Wives, her brigades don't count towards the X.

Job Overcomes
For each evil brigade your opponent has in play, that opponent must discard an evil card from hand or battle. You may draw a card.

Elder confirmation?

jmhartz is correct. "Each brigade your opponent has in play" = "Each of your opponent's brigades in play" = "Each brigade on cards in play that your opponent owns and controls"

How to play this deck, and the "Hand Control" deck concept is explained in great detail here...

IF you want to know the "Special Abilities" on individual cards please see...

Is there a database (sqlite or excel) of all redemption cards and their types and ruletexts?

Thanks for the database, in my "spare" time, I threw together a JavaScript library that will scan for Redemption cards and also inject the ruletext next to each card. As a test, I used it on this forum (full source here: http://github.com/relipse/RedemptionHelper.js )

To try it out, go to chrome console and do below:
Code: [Select]
loadJs = function(s) {

    var script = document.createElement("script");

    // This script has a callback function that will run when the script has
    // finished loading.
    script.src = s;
    script.type = "text/javascript";
    document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(script);
}
loadJs('//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.10.2/jquery.min.js');
loadJs('http://raw.github.com/relipse/RedemptionHelper.js/master/RedemptionHelper.js');

Now wait a few seconds, then you can do below (replacing #msg_**** with a jquery tag filter)

Code: [Select]
RedemptionHelper.cards.jQboldCards('#msg_514142');
 RedemptionHelper.cards.jQinsertCardInfo();
$('.redempcardinfo').css('font-size','9px').css('color','red');

And you will see something like this:

feel free to fork it!

Oh and change #msg_514142 to whatever message has a bunch of redemption cards, and give me some feedback too!
