Title: The TLG Redemption Cube!
Post by: uthminister [BR] on July 08, 2014, 11:53:10 PM
CUBE SPECS NOW UPDATED!
If you are not familiar with cube drafting, it involves using a set number of specific cards to make random packs with and then draft with them. The idea is to draft with a maximum of 12 players so if you are making 4, 15 card packs per player then you would need a maximum of 720 cards. That would give each player a 60 card pool plus up to 7 no special ability lost souls to build a minimum of 50 card deck. Also to make this a bit more interesting there are only one of each print of each card used in the cube.
So here are the specifics of the cube. The only additional rule will be that each player can only play 2 sites in their final deck.
16 good characters (includes split color) from each of the 9 good Brigades (144) 16 good enhancements (includes split color and/or covenants) from each of the 9 good Brigades (144) 21 evil enhancements (includes split color) from each of the 7 evil Brigades (147) 21 evil enhancements (includes split color and/or curses) from each of the 7 evil Brigades (147) 16 Fortresses 22 Sites 36 Artifacts 36 Lost Souls 8 Dual Alignment Cards 20 Multi Color Cards (7 evil / 13 good)
If you have suggestions of cards that you would like included, please also give me an idea of what card would be taken out to make space for it. Thanks!
BALANCED (GOOD/EVIL): YES BALANCED (OT/NT): NO (56%/43%...1%OTHER) POWER or PLAYABLE: PLAYABLE DOMINANTS: NO
OTHER NOTES: I tried to only use cards that would work with the largest variety of other cards. In other words; when I had a choice between a card that could only be used by a specific card type and one that could be used by multiple card types, I chose the later. This is also why many of the specifically targeted Artifacts and Fortresses are not included and why generic and lesser used Artifacts and Fortresses are included instead. I erred on the side of playability rather than power for this cube. I also used more cards from each evil Brigade than good Brigade to try to even out the fact that there are more good Brigades. Ultimately I decided to not include any dominants.

Reserved for Cube notes and ideas...
Doing the first cube update was a really fun time. Last year when I created the cube I was unsure how much fun it would be to play in correlation with how much work it was to put together. However, after taking the cube to Nationals and having to turn people away from playing it because we simply could not accommodate that many, I knew we were on to something. With the addition of a new good brigade in The Early Church set, it was the perfect opportunity to make the cube draftable by more people (was for up to 10 and now can handle 12 at a time). With the rise to 720, the ideal situation for the cube will be for 12 people to draft the cube in two pods of 6. After drafting occurs then players would be paired up for 6 2-player games per round for a total of 4 rounds to determine a winner. I am looking forward to bringing the cube to Knoxville for the 2015 Nationals and am hoping to be able to offer it as an after hours option for one or more of the days.

Found your thread! Those numbers seem high to me. It seems tough to get that many useful heroes/ECs in each color. I think it would help to fill in some of the "obvious staples" in each color to get people started. Wrath of Satan, Authority of Christ, Emperor Claudius, Emperor Nero, King of Tyrus, Prince of this World, Red Dragon, Captain of the Host, Balaam's Disobedience, Dungeon of Malchaiah, Coat of Many Colors, Angel of the Lord, Christian Martyr, Falling Away, etc. etc. I don't see any of those (and lots more) even being debatable. Leave the other slots for group discussion.

For doms don't use SoG or NJ, they would just make the game so unbalanced. I would recommend for doms Mayhem, VP, Grapes, AoTL, CM, Doubt (just because), DoN, Harvest Time

Are you going to have any restrictions on cards (ie. "common only" or "less than a dollar")?

No restrictions like that Mark. This will be a full fledged and all inclusive cube (minus SoG and NJ). I may see if one of our resident graphic designers would be willing to make alternative proxys for the cube itself.

That's too bad. This has marketing potential all over it. Think of all those worthless cards that you and Ken have lying around that no one wants to buy because they're not playable at top levels. Now think about creating a cube that is fun to play with and utilizes those cards, giving people a chance to see card combos that they don't normally. You could easily create a large number of these cubes, and due to the cheapness of the cards contained, you could sell them for relatively cheap prices. Playgroup leaders all over the country would buy those. It would create a whole new event across the country, that would be standardized almost immediately. And it would get rid of a lot of your (and Ken's) stock that you don't want sitting around. Think about the possibilities...

I think part of the fun of making a cube is that you actually get to "make" it. Simply copying a list doesn't have quite the same appeal. Comparing and debating each others inclusions is part of the fun. I'd love to see your $0.25 cube. No reason there has to be one specific list everyone uses.

Travis,
Why 16 characters and 11 enhancements per color? I don't understand. And possibly I don't understand the whole concept. Can you be a little more clear for those of us who have only played redemption. Thanks
Steven

The idea is to make a collection of cards that are from every brigade and with the most variety possible in order to make random packs that you would draft with. The reason I am using the number of cards I am is because I have a target number of cards (510) to make a certain number of packs (34, 15 card packs in order to have two extra so we are not using all of the cards every time) to do a draft for 8 people. I am trying to make the selection of cards balanced and powerful. Every time you draft you would randomize the cards again and make new packs (I use small manila envelopes to hold the packs before drafting them). Once you have drafted you would play three rounds of 2-player matches to determine a winner.
@Mark: If we put a cube out that was made up of cards people already have bunches of, they would just make one of their own. I agree with josiah that part of the fun is people having different cubes and discussing what should and should not be included.

how would you price out the packs for the cube or what would the cost per person for the draft run?

Post by: uthminister [BR] on July 10, 2014, 04:27:01 PM
@ White/Gold: It would be free or maybe minimal cost because you don't actually keep the cards afterwards. They are put back into the cube for the next time you draft with it.
@ Daniel: PM sent with my thoughts.

You have to include Jepthah in Red Heroes. His drawback is negligible in this format.
Lost Souls is weak.
Hur is a decent green hero since there are a few open slots.
I'd cut the white enhancements requiring NT Females. Really I'd cut any cards like this. Since it's being drafted, the challenge of getting your colors to match up is tough enough without throwing on additional restrictions.
Haman's Plot is a weird card to include. I think I'd skip it, in spite of it's power level. Dungeon of Malcahiah, and Achan's Sin are good ones to include.
Strife seems weak since you need dominant cuts.

I actually think you are under estimating how Cube will work with stuff like this. I agree that you will not want to draft cards that don't line up with your heroes which is why you will not and they will be left there for the taking by those who have taken those characters. Now having them match up in the game may be a bit harder but seeing as though each color has at most two main themes it is not impossible. And honestly I would rather have a card that has an awesome ability I could use rather than a card that has a terrible ability I would rather not use.
Haman's Plot is a weird card to include. I think I'd skip it, in spite of it's power level. Dungeon of Malcahiah, and Achan's Sin are good ones to include.
I gave a bunch of Haman's Plots so if we get to ripping some it won't be a big deal, however I was going to errata HP to say instead of "rip in half"; "remove from tournament".
@Everyone: Keep the changes and ideas rolling in. Once We have it at the desired quantities I will sleeve up the Cube and start doing trial runs with it. The sooner that happens the better the Cube will be for Nationals.

I think the easiest way to cut down the artifacts is to have a minimum requiremetns that the artifact be generally useful. That would leave the following six to be cut...
Given that you only have three Covenants total (unless I missed one), Book of the Covenant seems like an easy cut in Artifacts.
Windows of Narrow Light should be dropped given the paucity of blank heroes Assyria's Tribute should be dropped as it can only be used and Assyrian Iron Pan should be dropped as it requires a Babylonian Magic Charms should be dropped as it can only be used with a Magician. Urim and Thummin should be dropped as it requires a high priest

Alright, I have added Trap of the Devil because there are already two Tabernacle/Temple fortresses. I would be open as to which two of the three of those type would be put into the cube. If you were to include two of the three (Solomon's Temple, Herod's Temple, and Tabernacle) which would you included/leave out and why?
Also we are on to the next color that needs some tweaking; brown brigade: Need to add 1 Brown Enhancement Need to add 5 Brown Characters
Your thoughts?

For forts, I'd say keep the Temples (and there's actually 4, you forgot Zerubbabel's Temple) and take out The Name of the Lord. There may be 4 temples but there are also 8 people.
Brown cards:
King Rehoboam Abimelech Complainers Jezebel King Abijam The Jeering Youths (take out Morgan)

This idea sounds really interesting and I would love to participate in a tournament. A couple of question... *I assume this plays like a booster, can you explain set up in more detail? i.e. normal booster set up; pass right, then left; picking packs *Each player receives 4 packs of 15 randomly mixed cards correct? *You keep all the cards in the cube, then mix them up into different pack each time you play correct? *Would this be an option at actual tournaments to replace booster because of cost reasons?

Plays just like regular booster draft. Cards are random and distributed as you assumed. The cube is reusable for many fun gaming experiences. I would be open to doing this as a side event but it would be up to cactus if they would allow it in lieu of regular booster...my guess would be no because they want us to open packs.
Thanks for the questions.

Hey Travis,
This is an awesome idea, and I'm going to use this with my young playgroup to help teach them how to do booster draft, as this is my favorite category. One question: I'm guessing that the characters like Ira, Joshua, Elhanan are the warrior class version of these cards.

Have you ever thought of doing a draft where the player gets to pick 2 good and 2 evil doms for the deck? that way you don't have to put them in and they can use any they own as long as they follow the criteria? Just a thought.

I've never played cube although I'd like to try it out this year. (If I can make nat's). Personally I'd say 2 dominants total. Either 2 good, 2 Evil, or one of each.

Are you suggesting adding them to the draft? I think the others were saying players would bring or choose two doms to use. I think adding them to the draft would really throw off the balance of the cube. Honestly I am not even sure I like doms being included in any fashion now that I have thought about it. I have taken out all cards that have interactions with doms from the cube (which tend to at least tone them down a small bit) so they would run free and wild in the game play.

Update coming soon to add Persecuted Church through Fall of Man to the cube and perhaps expand the cube to accommodate a few more players.

Resurrecting this one: Is cubing still a topic out there - even more with all these new cards and the latest Meeks?

I have not updated with the new cards yet but have made updates since my most recent post. I just failed to transfer the updates to this thread.

Sounds cool! Please let me/us know as soon as you might have updated them some day. I am highly interested in the newer cards, especially how you deal with DAEs and DACs as well as cards like Hope, Fifth Seal/Justice Seekers, Third Seal/Famine, Behemoth, Leviathan, FireFoxes and cards like those (so cards synergising more then one kind)!
