Title: Most Popular Variations
Post by: Minister Polarius on January 22, 2011, 11:23:40 PM
Well, as you may or may not know I've recently been awarded the honor of succeeding Professor Underwood as mod of this board. This is not a very controversial board, but that doesn't mean I can't still make myself useful. I'd like to compile and sticky a list of the most popular unofficial gameplay variations. I can think of Type NW and Type Testament that would fit that category. So I'm asking two things of you: first, are there any other widely-played variations other than those two, and second, could someone post or PM me the Type NW rules in their entirety? Much obliged B)

Back in the day there was a "Retro" variation in which only cards from A/B, Limited/Unlimited and Prophets could be used.

I'm not sure it was ever very popular, but I remember at least one online retro tournament that was put together.

Perhaps it could be revised to include Women, Warriors and C/D.

I thought it was up to Apostles?

Maybe someone also did a Retro tournament through Apostles, but the original was A/B, Lim/Unlim, and Prophets.

There should be one that limits cards so that new players could compete with experienced ones with large collections.

A la this: http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=25031.0 (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=25031.0).  However, I'm sure someone's come up with a better idea.

Type Ban is a good idea, but it's never really been popular, probably because we've never reached a consensus on what exactly should be banned (other than pretty much unanimous agreement to ban NJ).

I've heard calls to ban NJ, but never a consensus.  This isn't type ban.  It's a separate type intended to allow newer players to compete with more experienced players.  (Thus the whole deal with starter deck cards)  Guardian said that others had come up with similar ideas.

What's the difference between it and type ban? Just which cards are banned?

In type ban, the only difference from T1 is that a few cards are banned.  In a n00b-friendly variation, various rules are set up (which may include restriction of some rarer cards) in order to even the playing field.  Like I said, mine's only an example, and Guardian said there were others.  I'm sure there's a better version than "big four" (which has never really been tested) for you to add.

Well, it wouldn't go in the sticky since it's never been a "popular" variation (to my knowledge, if someone knows otherwise then I'll put it up there). I'd encourage anyone who wants to get a game type recognized to post definitive rules for it and try to get people to play it.
