Title: Which Card Design is more appealing to you?
Post by: Daniel on July 18, 2014, 01:01:46 PM
I'm still working on my biblical card game and wanted to get everyone's opinions one what style suits them. Which card layout do you gravitate towards more?

MTG/Wizards of the Coast
(http://magiccards.info/scans/en/m14/8.jpg)

-Old school style layout with small space for artwork and outdated design and a bit of RPG charm-

LOTR/Fantasy Flight Games
(http://www.cardgamedb.com/forums/uploads/lotr/med_hands-upon-the-bow-saf.jpg)

-Modern design, large space for artwork; touches of medieval design-

Yugioh/Shonen Jump
(http://www.bbtoystore.com/mm5/yugioh/YU_CT07EN008.jpg)

-REALLY old school design, cartoonish elements-

Personally, I love the Fantasy Flight design.

I like the LotR/Fantasy Flight one the best as well.

MtG actually just recently changed their template.

I saw that, and I'm a little disappointed the changes were so minor

Think of it like evolution. Little changes ultimately will lead to bigger changes.

Anything but YGO.  The card design is honestly the second biggest factor in me not learning the game.

Honestly, I think card title placement across the top is a functional element.

My personal favorite layout would be modern L5R...

I prefer a card design where I don't have to hunt all over the cards for the main information. And I really dislike card titles that are not at the top of the card, since that makes finding your cards in your hand more difficult. The L5R would be acceptable; I don't like the LotR design. Magic is very functional, if not terribly attractive. Some combination of those elements would work for me, if I were inclined to try a new game. However, I'm down to two collectible games, and don't plan on starting any in the future for financial reasons, but I wish you good luck with your project.

Definitely title across the top.  I hold my cards in my left hand, and having the title along the left side is terrible for that.  Conversely, right side title would be awful for right-handed people.  Otherwise, somewhere between MtG and the LoTR style.

I'm actually against the status quo and I like card titles along the left edge. When I hold cards in my hand I don't hold them each slightly below the one behind it so as a result the card titles are covered by the next card. In LotR I'm able to see the card titles while holding them normally in my hand, as well as the cost of the card (Redemption doesn't have costs like that so that's moot, but it's part of why I like it).

Thank you all for your insight. So far, this is the general layout I've created. Obviously it differs from type to type.

Noice. Do you have any examples for cards with stats (if such exist in your game)?

You may want to also include (just because everyone else does, which means there might be a reason) is some way to clearly separate your identifiers from the ability. I am not sure that just bold is enough.

I want to point out that this game isn't technically "collectible" due to the fact that all you need to play is the base game. Think of it as Settlers of Catan or Munchkin.

Will it be "expandable" like Munchkin? My kids won't play Munchkin without the Fairy Dust cards and Munchkinomicon.

Absolutely; I'll be releasing small development "chapter" sets (around 50 cards at a time) every 3 months or so. Players don't have decks in this game, there is one deck that all players take from during the game, so the development sets can be seamlessly added into the base game.

I have always felt card design had to bow to the fact that cards are fanned in the hand. That means titles on top and other critical info on the left hand side.

Daniel, your design looks really nice. So have you developed a game? How does it play? Sorry if you have this info somewhere else. I just got back to the boards.

Thanks! I actually haven't formally posted about the game yet; I'm still developing it. I'm also currently looking for artists (wink wink) for some of the character cards.

Each player assumes the identity of a Nomad, encountering miracle workers, prophets, bandits, warlords and evil spirits. All cards are based on the biblical text and/or jewish/catholic traditions that enhance the surreality of the game.

It sounds pretty shweet. Will you be selling it?

Interesting. How do you win?
By getting to 20 points (discovering relics are a quick way to gain points)

As of now, you can play as 1 of 3 "classes": Oracles, Spirits, and Warlords. Oracles are figures who prophesy, can foretell the future, or simply can converse with the supernatural world (these can be good or evil figures). Warlords and Spirits, like Oracles, can be either good or evil.

Before playing, you must build a deck of 30 cards containing only cards that suit your class. When you play against another player (and their 30 card deck), there is a central pile of cards in the middle of the table that contains random Curses, Relics, and Blessings, which are neutral and are gathered during the game by the players.
