Interestingly enough, Karen Gillan was also in that episode (with eyes on her hands). She mentioned on Twitter she could have sworn she recognized him from

I'm okay with the choice. I look forward to seeing him as the next Doctor.

I was hoping for a female doctor. Maybe Capaldi will play it transgender.
There is 0 precedence* for Time Lords being able to change genders during regenerations so I see no reason why they would make a female doctor. I'm a lore junkie and admittedly I would actually have a hard time accepting a female doctor. I would watch it, sure, but the continuity would be all broken and I don't know if I'd enjoy it as much.
* = In the reboot since 2005, I haven't seen many episodes of the older series if there's gender swapping back then.

Go rewatch The Doctor's Wife.
Catherine Zeta Jones was also Davies' suggestion for the 11th Doctor.

One offhand quote* hardly counts as precedence, wether Moffat claims it is or not. I must say that if that was ever a goal, it should have been done when, you know, there were other Time Lords around. (And yes, I do realize that the years make a difference and how much less likely that was when it was possible).

There's something called subtlety, you know. Randomly coming out with a female regeneration without building up to it is just bad writing. I gauarantee you that line was very intentional; there are other hints since 2005 suggesting it's possible too (eg: when Tennant regenerates into Smith.)
The main positive side of this doctor being male is that Moffat is a terrible writer and would just hypersexualize a female doctor.
(And all this even ignores the fact Moffat has said it's very possible to have a female doctor in interviews)

Just because a writer says it can happen doesn't mean it fits with continuity. :P
I'm sure they could write it in to MAKE it fit, but as it stands now it wouldn't really (they'd need more than one offhand comment).
I have nothing against a female doctor except that I feel it wouldn't fit with the current lore.

The fact is that gender switching via regeneration is canon. That's pretty much the definition of fitting with continuity. It wouldn't be that hard to make it not fit if they really want to go down that road, but as it stands now, it's canon. I can guarantee there's a less than 0% chance that the 13th doctor will be a white male (a black actor was offered the role of the doctor in the past and turned it down anyway, so that's a pretty safe bet.)
Predicting this three years early: Tilda Swinton.

If you want my real, honest opinion: they should offer the role to the person they think will do the best in said role. I don't think they should offer it to a woman or a black person or anything else specifically to try and please a certain group. The Doctor Who series deserves good actors (Tennant and the like) regardless of their physical characteristics.
