Saw it, thought it better than the first, but still no comparison to LotR.

I disagree i think the action from the both Hobbit movies is better and so is the comedy.

I love the Hobbit, but the personality of the characters is totally different than what J.R.R. Tolkien wrote them to be! In the first movie for example, when Gandalf came, Bilbo wasn't at all dismissive of him. Also, the scenes with Beorn, and in Dale were both very different, and Bard isn't even in the books till after the arkenstone. Also, Bilbo wore his ring the whole time while talking to smaug, and none of the dwarfs even entered any hall, and the whole thing about the forge is made up completely.
I loved it, but it was no comparison to the Lord of the Rings

Haven't seen it yet! But am anxiously awaiting to!  And I've seen the first one and so far I am in agreement with most everyone that LoTR trilogy is by far the best!

I can't wait to debase my childhood further by seeing this movie.

Saw the first one; hated it. Reluctantly went to see this one and was blown away. Benedict Cumberbatch's performance as Smaug, while overhyped, was the highlight of the film. It felt like another Lord of the Rings film instead of a sequel to An Unexpected Journey. Excellent movie.

I mean, The Avengers wins on both accounts there, but we all know how awful that was as a movie.

It's anti-sarcasm. Neither sarcastic nor serious.

I've been getting a lot of mixed reviews.

Personally I enjoyed it. It was probably a little too drawn out and they could've cut a good 30 minutes out of it without a problem. And I really could've done without the whole love story plot in there but oh well. I actually really liked an unexpected journey a lot because I'm an avid smeagle fan and I thought he was amazing and the rest of the movie wasn't too bad. So I would say the first one was better than the second depending on what you're looking for.

My brother thought it was a pretty terrible film and was waiting to leave the whole time.

yeah lol, midget aragorn wubs tauriel  :-*

Overall I liked it. The second movie was great with Legolas, he actually seemed like a real man this time. He had a super dark side which I thought was cool. The finally maximized his full potential with the cgi or whatever. Tauriel was cool but she played to much of a role for me. She reminds me of the character jen lawrence plays and susan from narnia and I just want to vomit...  womens lib meets el cliche! Arwen had a much better personality. I liked the elf king he was cool and I also like the orcs talking to each other more than they did in lotr. I thought the dale part was really boring.

Overall the bilbo and the dwarves have ruined the epicness and darkness that lotr  movies should be. To be fair its not really Lord of the Rings and the book is much more whimsical than the others but that doesn't mean you have to make the dwarves like the ones in snow white.  To many "jokes", to many context funnies, and too much cgi (except for combat). I expect 300esque  combat in the third part. Make it bloody! make it R ! We want limbs flying everyrawr!

The thing I thought of immediately when the dwarf/elf love thing was going on was the song by Tal Bachman, "She's So High". That song fits so perfectly to that whole side plot it's humorous.

Spoiler (hover to show)

I am looking forward to the next one though!
No

The Desolation of Smaug is referring to the ruins of the city, not the act of killing Smaug.

Either way, no desolation occurred...

Similar to LOTR - great movie, not-so-great adaptation of the book. Seriously, it almost seems as if the screenwriter just looked at the CliffsNotes, took the names of all the major events, made stuff up based on that, and threw in a hot girl for good measure.

The whole Kili/Tauriel thing is actually kind of depressing when you consider (Spoiler for next movie, not this one)

That, and when you consider the fact that there have only been a couple of cross-breed marriages in the Tolkienverse, and all with species on (relatively) good terms with each other, it just becomes kind of ridiculous.
