Move it sure but this is not intened to be spam

If a mod would like to move this to Entertainment, that'd be cool. This one will be a legit discussion, not spam.  :P

Response I was posting when it got moved to Quarentine... (post went through, and I was like "wait a minute, this isn't off topic anymore!")

I found them via memebase late july/early august

I discovered the show about middle of the first season last year.

It's all of three words.  For the OP, you probably should have more than that.

Oh, and you've garnered yourself somewhat of a reputation.  If you want people to like you, try not to be as loud and irritating as possible.

like most people i saw this show repeatedly being brought up in rage comics (reddit or rage collection only) and decided to check it out. I was then disturbed to find that what had become as popular as it did, was actually pretty terrible. Not trolling just giving my honest opinion. Hate on me if you wish. Also: to the OP, Trumpet blast is not for your spamming. Stop.

You're entitled to you're opinion.  :)

I will say, at first I was like "Why in the world am I watching this?" I still can't really explain WHY I enjoy it so much.

One possible reason: Lauren Faust said that she tried to make it so all ages could enjoy it, not just kids. Based on the general reactions around the internet, I'd say she hit a home run.

I just don't understand it I guess, and it's not like an "I hate all cartoons thing" because I still watch Ed Edd n' Eddy, Invader Zim, and occasionally still break out the Digimon. I just couldn't get in to this show.

So this is a tv show, or internet cartoon, or something along those lines?
Title: Re: Ponies.
Post by: Lamborghini_diablo on October 17, 2011, 10:36:40 AM
It's the 4th attempt at making a My Little Pony TV show... and the first one that is actually good (thanks to Lauren Faust). For the sake of comparison, I  tried to watch some of the older ones... I couldn't get past the first minute of each.

It looks like an internet cartoon because all the animation is done in flash. (What I would give to see those flash files...)

Also, some backstory for those who don't know. The TV show was launched without too much fanfare, but then a handful of popular sites noticed it, and it absolutely EXPLODED in popularity across the internet. This is probably the #1 example of "Unexpected demographics" in history.

The guys liking it is not a troll. There is actually quite the cult following for this show, and it's a large percentage of teen males.

I bet if you could get an accurate count of the different demographics that watch the show, men in their 20's would be the leading group. Not lying.

Like I said before, they actually managed to make it into something ALL ages and genders can enjoy.

I doubt the original shows referenced things such as Lord of the Rings (several times), Xmen, Star Trek (going so far as to base a character on Q... and get the SAME VOICE ACTOR for the part) Star Wars (including an almost direct frame for frame copy of a scene), Blazing Saddles, David Bowie, 2001: Space Odyssey, Ren and Stimpy, several Wizard of Oz references, Poltergeist... and probably a lot more that I've missed.

Yes! Another voice of sanity in the midst of all the chaos!

Almost all the guys in my chess club at school are "bronies." Because of them, I have seen episode 25 (where they throw the surprise party when the one is trying to get them to come to her other one) and the first two. I have to say I wasn't that particularly impressed. I've seen worse, but I've also seen better.
Much better.

In Fact The First 2 Episodes are the MOST HATED episodes in the fandom as far as I've Heard. In my experience they are most cheesy and least original.(they were before the Fandom of course) If You want to Watch a Good Episode Try Party of One or Sonic Rainboom. As the Episodes keep being created THEY KEEP GETTING BETTER.

I don't think it is very fair for you to pass judgment on these guys without ever having watched the show yourself. I have never seen this particular show, but I rather enjoyed the old Pokemon TV show, even though so many Christians were quick to judge. Especially now, as a father, I find myself more open to at least watch shows targetting a younger demographic before dismissing it as "only for girls." Granted I have a young daughter, so my opinion is somewhat biased, but I think so many people miss out on entertaining media because of perceived stereotypes. For those of us who watched Princess Bride, we know how a movie that may seem "girly" actually appeals to men quite favorably.

FTR, even Lord of the Rings had trolls, so they can't be all bad.

I For One enjoyed a Show in which there was no apocalyptic threat, though i love the following (e.g. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars,Chronicles of Narnia) They can sometimes wear one out and leave one wishing for something less "Manly" and more Peaceful

A lot of the writers/animators/production crew worked for shows like Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Lab, and Spongebob, so it's not like they hired a bunch of nobodies to draw ponies.

OK, just to be fair to all of you, I took all these suggestions and just watched both episodes referenced above.  I also freely admit that I am a HUGE fan of the Princess Bride, and some juvenile-targeted cartoons (ie. Animaniacs & Veggie Tales).  All that being said, I found Ponies to be predictable, silly, feminine, and lacking in originality.  I just don't get the fascination expressed here.

The two big draws are pop culture references and subversion of type.  To wit: Lauren Faust collaborated with husband/creator Craig McCracken on Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends prior to this.  This show has the same visual style and quirky humor, but for whatever reason became an Internet meme overnight, which only boosted its popularity among young adult males.

My wife barely understands why one of my favorite cartoons of the last ten years features three kindergarten girls with gnarly superpowers named Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup.  But she understood it even less before she saw this episode (begin around 4:52):

It's not without its charm but the older shows were better.  The imaginary friends in Foster's were original and creative characters, and the PPG were strongly tongue-in-cheek from start to finish, as demonstrated above.  The Ponies are better as an Internet meme than as a TV show, since the appeal to bronies is deeply ironic.

I will say a select handful of the fan creations are even better than the show itself. (Just.... stay away from the fan fiction.... though that should be a general rule about ANY subject)

I Would Just like to Say that if you are Not Particularly Interested in the Show as a show or a meme That's Fine, as long as you don't hate Verbally. :)  :preach:

Agreed. If someone doesn't like it, I can understand.

The thing that bugs me the most... is when people who don't like it talk down to you for it. It's no different then say, women listening to death metal. Sure it doesn't fit the " gender stereotypes," but I see no reason why liking something like this could be considered "bad."

And, for the record, this is the only "girly" thing I truely enjoy. I still listen to my metal (while looking at pony related things... can't help but laugh when I do this), still play my first person shooters... so you don't have to worry about me because I like this show.  :P

I think it's a combination of gender and age. Nobody gets down on you for liking Angry Beavers, even though it's a kids show. Nobody gets down on you for liking Adelle, even though she's more of a chick artist. The problem comes when you start liking something for little girls.

My wife and I enjoyed watching Kim Possible before we had a daughter. In fact, here in Orlando, every age enjoys just about everything on The Disney Channel, which has a target audience of little girls.

As far as MLP goes, I choose to be stereotypical and slice away at the masculinity of those guys who are watching a show based off of little girls' toys.  ???

I also choose to do this knowing I haven't seen the show and have abandoned all signs of sensitivity and weakness because I'm a guy and that's the way we are: insensitive, emotionless, and uncaring creatures...

That particular episode of PPG was actually brilliant, and fun to watch.  However, I only know that because you posted it here before and therefore I watched it.  Even after seeing it though I'm really not interested in watching PPG on a regular basis.  Now if you posted a couple other episodes that were equally entertaining, then I'd become interested.

I checked out the 2 episodes of MLP that were recommended and they weren't anywhere close to as interesting as the PPG episode about the Beatles.

Thesis:
I can't believe that an internet thread got me to check out a show about My Little Ponies, or that it turned out to be A LOT better than I thought it could be.
Anti-Thesis:
I checked out the 2 episodes of MLP that were recommended and they weren't anywhere close to as interesting as the PPG episode about the Beatles.
(Which Episodes are best are really an opinion Except for the hated Season 1 premiere and a select few loved ones [In my Opinion The Season 2 Episodes are better than Any of the Season 1 Episodes {Expect maybe Winter Wrap-up or The GGGala} I Mean they Are WAY less Cheesy and {stereotypical} "Girly" and has A LOT more references  :2cents: {All Hail Discord/Q and Twilight/Gollum!  :maul: }] )

But Anyways, If you Find the older ones More Interesting, Thats Fine. :grouphug:

But But Anyways, This Thread was Meant to Be About Ponies not Bronies. I wonder If it can Recover From This Epic Derail

The ONLY thing that song needed was a ".... just kidding." at the end.

Also, if anyone still doubts that the show has a pretty signifigant male following, this wouldn't have been printed otherwise:

Well the fact is it has a largely Teen/Adult Male Following, It's just how their going to react. If i Saw Bronies and wasn't one i would probably do some wth'ing of my own but i wouldn't hate on them.

This thread got me to look-up this series, and, after watching all the episodes, I found it to be relatively good, though some of the episodes were definitely duds to me.  In the end though, its not the best show I've ever seen, nor even the best kids show I've ever seen, its just pretty good.

Some of the fan-made stuff is pretty good, I'm particularly loving the Friendship is Dragons webcomic (basically a comic setting the show as a table-top RPG, with the players playing the characters, of course I might be a little biased if favor of it because Darths and Droids (same concept, just with Star Wars is one of my favorite comics/webcomics ever)

To be honest, I wouldn't call it a meme anymore. It's more of a massive fandom now.

Also yes, I still enjoy watching the show too. I don't go out and buy all the little toy ponies, nor do I make any fan art / fiction, I just like to watch it.

I will say, some people are a little too obsessed with it, but what fanbase DOESN'T have those type of people?

If You want to Watch a Good Episode Try Party of One or Sonic Rainboom.

I gave this an honest shot, really. The show's best moments revolved around slap stick but there wasn't ever any substance. I expected some intellectual jokes now and again because of the popularity but never heard them. Also I didn't see how this show was "original" at all. Slap stick humor, (been done and re-done) plus a few (not really funny just there) pop culture references, and a massive dose of femininity and what comes out? This show...

That all being said, if you like it more power to you... its just not for me...

So I finally watched this show, quite accidentally. The show is now available on Netflix. My wife was looking for something for my daughter to watch and saw "My Little Ponies," so she figured that would be perfect for my little princess. Little did she know...

My daughter is now hooked. She wants to watch several episodes every day. As her father, I am compelled to watch shows with her when she is this excited about them. Interestingly (in light of this thread) I have found that I can bear watching this show much more than shows like Barbie and Strawberry Shortcake. The latter shows make me want to excuse myself at every opportunity, but I can easily sit through full episodes of Ponies. As an RPG freak, I was pleasantly surprised to see a Griffon, Manticore, and Red Dragon all within the first few episodes.

One of the recent episodes caught my attention in particular. The attention to detail was impressive to me. One pony is trying to earn their "cutie mark" but doesn't know what they want to be their niche. The pony tries a variety of careers to see if any of them "fit." At one point the pony tries baking, and makes cupcakes. The cupcakes are apparently nasty tasting, so the pony gives up that endeavor. The show is building up to a party where all the rival ponies already have their mark, and make fun of the one pony who does have their mark yet. Although there is a life lesson built in here, the part that impressed me was in the background. Every once in a while, as the pony is trying to hide the fact that she doesn't have a mark yet, there is a snack table or tray that appears in the background. A random pony then takes one of the snacks, which is a cupcake, takes a bite and then hurls. They did this several times at random intervals. I thought it was hilarious.

There's a LOT of references that the original target audience wouldn't understand in this show. They wanted the show to be enjoyable for the parents too, and that is most likely why guys ended up enjoying it too.

Yeah, the attention to detail and continuity in this show is VERY well done.

We're only up to about the 12th episode, but so far it seems more like a Sorcerer's Apprentice storyline with an Odd Couple flair. It's definitely not what I expected, but my daughter loves it anyway.

*Slow Clap* The Herd Grows... :)

Edit: In Retrospect I did Start this thread rather lamely...

How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!

2 Samuel 1:27

What exactly does this mean?

-------------------------------------

The most recent episode we watched had a cockatrice in it. A cockatrice! What little girl has ever heard of one of these? That was put in the episode for me. Only a person who knows legends & lore, or has played D&D could possibly know what it is. I found it interesting how they tied it into the show with the Cutie-Mark Crusaders looking for the missing chicken.

This should serve as definitive evidence that this show was not just created for little girls. This show reminds me of the old D&D cartoon from the 80's, except the adventurers are ponies instead of children.

I won't say which episode (so you can enjoy it when it happens), but one of them briefly features a Cerberus that escaped from Tartarus (name specifically mentioned).

Well Season 2 Ended with a Great Episode.

I agree, that episode was really good. Bring on Season 3. BTW, John de Lancie confirmed that he did more voice work for the show... so more discord in S3?

I Hope So.
Also, The Mind Controlling Shape-shifters were completely unexpected and The Evil Witch with Green Fire was so Disney.

As long as the overall quality of the show stays the same (or improves) I'll be happy.

Also, how come Luna got an episode, but Celestia has never been more than a background character. I hope she gets her own episode in Season 3 (or maybe an episode about both of them).

Yeah, But More of a History Type Thing. We Had Hearths Warming Eve which Showed us the Founding of Equestria, But From there until the First Episode is a Giant Blank. The Origins of Celestia, Luna and Discord (And the Story Mentioned in the Love Poison book) are an interest of many. And Where Did these changelings come from?, As well. I Would really Like a Creation Legend episode but its a bit of a stretch.

If you went from the Phoenix episode to the one with Spike and the Owl (and the green dragon) you skipped one.

Where exactly are you watching episodes from? If Your Source has the edited derpy on the "The Last Roundup" episode of season 2 you will need to look up the original. why did they edit it anyways?, it was a just few emails complaining about nothing.

Love and Tolerate everypony!
Can I ask a serious question about this phrase please?

I have a 10 year old boy who plays with Legos and pretend swords and scary action figures one day, but also enjoys his huge Littlest Pet Shop and Webkinz collection on another day.  I say this because I see him as "well-rounded" and am not afraid of him getting interested in things that are traditionally considered to be for girls.  This is why I have considered looking into this show.

But phrases like this, and some of the show's most vocal proponents, are what give me a moment of pause before bringing it into my home.  Is this "love and tolerate everypony" thing a creation of the show, or of the fanbase?  If it is a creation of the show, then are we certain that the show's creators do not have an agenda in mind that most Christians would disagree with?  (I'm sure that most of you know what I'm talking about.)

Yes, the bible makes it clear that we are to love everybody, even our enemies actually.  I don't have a problem with that at all.  It's this "tolerate" part that I'm hung up on.  What do they mean by that, and why did that word have to be added to the "love" portion?  The word "tolerance" is tossed around today as an appeal for people with strong religious views to SHUT UP and to keep their views to themself.  Ironically this is the epitomy of INtolerance of other viewpoints, but there it is.

So can someone please provide any factual information that they have on what the show means when it says that we are to "tolerate" every body in addition to loving them?  Because it seems to me that whatever behavior we tolerate by being silent about it, we also encourage.

Thanks for your help.

(P.S.  How does the show explain the lack of boy ponies?  Are there any pony "parents" on the show?)

It's more of a fanbase creation. They might have said that once in the show, but it's not said as often as the fans would make you think. Note, I'm speaking from kind of an outsider's viewpoint as I've kinda stopped following what the fanbase is doing since I graduated.

"Love and Tolerate" is a phrase created by and used by the fan-base.

There are boy ponies on the show, its just that the main cast is all female.  They all have jobs (Rarity owns a fashion shop, Rainbow Dash works controlling the weather for the town, Twilight is essentially a grad-student, Applejack works on a farm, Pinkie Pie works in a sweet shop, Fluttershy... well she takes care of animals so I guess that's her job) and live on their own, so it makes sense for them not to be living with their parents any more.  We still have seen many of their parents (Rarity's father and mother, Twilight's father and mother), so yes they do have parents.  Also the ponies who run the shop Pinkie Pie works at are married and have two baby ponies.

In addition to what has already been said, (The Phrase is fan-created) I would like to point out that not all fans like or approve of this statement, if fact, some hate it and consider it stupid. But there are also the groups that use and encourages the use of the phrase, so It really is a Matter of opinion and/or beliefs.

Simply stated:
Yes,There are Male Ponies, but they are lesser in number than the females.
Yes, The Parents of Applejack,PinkiePie and Twilight are Shown if Flashbacks in the episode named "Cutie Mark Chronicles"

OK, I think we gave it a fair shot.  Last night myself, my son, and my wife watched the two-parter first episode.  Sadly, I am not a "brony".  Nor did it grab my wife's interest or my son's.  My son kept making gagging gestures, and my wife kept rolling her eyes.  Personally it did seem pretty heavy on the "cheesy/sappy" scale, and I wasn't even impressed with the animation style.  I did like the voice-acting and different characters though.  I guess I just went into it with really high expectations based on what had been said here.  I'm sure that if I had a 7 or 8 year old daughter she would love it.

On the plus side though, I saw nothing offensive in the show and I agree that it tried to teach good lessons, and I didn't feel it was trying to teach anything inappropriate.  Thanks for inviting me to watch it, and for addressing my questions/concerns.

The show is definitely not for everybody, much like Monty Python (which also causes gagging guestures and eye rolling). Admittedly, I would not watch the show for personal enjoyment. I only watch it with my daughter. The show seems to have been designed for a father to watch with his daughter, which is not the norm for girl-themed shows. The peripheral effect was that RPG-minded males also found it interesting.

I applaud your approach to this, even though you didn't care for the show.

Thanks for inviting me to watch it, and for addressing my questions/concerns.
are you kidding me. the first episode is the worst episode. But if you don't like the show that's fine too

You have a point. They were the only episodes I felt uncomfortable watching. (Especially the part when the "Mane 6" defeat Luna.) Later episodes are FAR better. I'm going to start watching Season 2 soon (I hope) but I can recommend some good ones from the first season, if you'd like.

OK then, is there a consensus out there for best episode?  I'm only willing to watch one more before I throw in the towel.

Generally, Kinda, but People's attitudes towards certain episodes are diverse depending on there personality and/or favorite ponies. Pretty much the only episodes that know of that universally rejected are the first 2-part, and Miss Mare-Do-Well.
Again, True Bronies understand and accept if a person doesn't like the show so that's All right too :)

I highly recommend the episodes "Party of One," "Feelin' Pinkie Keen," and "Bridle Gossip." I laughed a lot while watching these, as well as the episode "Dog and Pony Show."

I hear that a lot of Bronies love the Season 2 finale.

Season 2 Episodes 1 and 2 should be better. They feature John DeLancie (Who played Q in Star Trek).

OK, I watched those instead last night.  BIG IMPROVEMENT.  I was actually entertained and even laughed at a couple parts.  "Q" as Discord was hysterical, and Pinkie (sp?) is a riot, and may very well be my favorite.

I'm not saying that I feel compelled to watch the entire show now, but at least I got a better glimpse of its potential.  Those first two episodes seem really lame in comparison.  How long did it take season one to "raise the bar" to the next level?  Did they get better writers or something?

Well there's the Bit about John doing more voice-work and there was another thing about faust completely leaving the show in the other Writers' etc. hands I read on an image board, otherwise not much else I've heard.

That Sounds like a kind of approval-ish? Anyways Glad You've Had a Chance to see Some of what we Enjoy, Your opinion of it is now totally up to you.

Well, (IMO) The Bar was Raised Right after those 2 Episodes. (I Think it is the only Episodes that were bad, or more accurately:No Episodes (IMO) were as bad as it)

Season 1 picked up after a few episodes

Season 2 was pretty much the same quality as S2E1-2 the entire time.

The thing with ponies is that somewhat recently a new My Little Pony (Friendship is Magic) television series started to be aired.   When some people watched, they found it to be far better than they expected from a cartoon targeted for young girls, and the show exploded in popularity among the demographic of teenage and young adult males.

Dude, I started on the middle ground. I thought Bronies were okay and I had no problem with them. The show is so attractive (to me at any rate) because of the humor, pop culture references, the moral lessons, and what every Brony and I like, the well-written stories and character development. It is hands down one of the best cartoons made in the past few years.

Last year, at the time my cousin was graduating from college, I discovered BronyVid's "Ponymen" trailer through ICV2.com. (It's now known as Watchponies. And yes, it's a Watchmen parody.) I died laughing and I checked out some of his other videos and liked them.
I noticed Bronies in a lot of places, and I found found them funny (because then, I assumed it was a joke.) Then I noticed that they seriously enjoyed the show. I was fine with that.
During the last week of June, Rhett and Link did an episode of their show "Good Mythical Morning" about Bronies and it stirred my interest in the show. They talked about and showed  parts of Saberspark's "Ballad of the Brony." The next day, just for giggles, I decided to watch it. At the end, I realized I had been bit by the Brony bug. (And my timing was perfect, because Bronycon was right that weekend.) I started watching episodes in order (MISTAKE!) and the show officially won me over in the episode "Applebucking Season." I know (im)patiently wait for Season 3.

And rawrlolsauce, thanks for giving it a shot before criticizing without having watched an episode.

I was on a real emotional high while watching (which is unusual for me). I thought it was great. It had a whopping 7 songs in the entire episode!

I have mixed feelings about Twilight being an alicorn. It would've been best to save it for the end of the series (as we're going to have a fourth season with 26 episodes) but I'll live with it.

We're going to have a LOOOOONG wait until the next season, so I'll be busy watching the old episodes, reading fanfics, watching "Double Rainboom" and possibly watching the spinoff. (Yes, spinoff. The premise sounds like a bad fanfic, but knowing this is by the same people, I'll give it a shot.)

To sum up, it was a great episode to end the season. (HOORAY FOR VINYL SCRATCH AND DERPY CAMEOS!)

Finally caught up on season 3 thanks to reading the finale spoiler in this thread (though apparently, I would have seen that spoiler anyway if I continued following the show as closely as I did before).

My thoughts on S3:

1-2: Had its moments, but wasn't as good as I hoped.
3: Can you make your face THIS CRAZY? That alone made the episode worth watching.
4: okay episode.
5: Fantastic episode.
6: This one could set up some fun episodes in S4.
7: This could also have interesting implications for S4.
8: Probably my least favorite episode of the season. Just kinda.... boring.
9: The timberwolf animations were probably the best thing in this episode.
10: Favorite S3 episode for obvious reasons.
11: Okay episode. However, I really like how...
12: ... they handled the simultaneous storylines thing. This episode was pretty good.
13: I really liked it. I'm interested to see how this shakes up Season 4.

Don't mind the double post...

I realized something about the S3 finale. It seems like it was written more for people in their 20's. Young kids won't really be able to relate to the aspect of "so... this is an entire new stage of my life" for quite some time. However, this is a realization people in their 20's are smacked with as soon as they finish college. Childhood is done, you're entering the real world, and there is no turning back.

I have a question as to why that would make you happy?  It won't have any effect on FIM, and I would think someone who watches My Little Pony would be willing to give a show a chance before dismissing it.
