Title: Distopian Futures
Post by: SomeKittens on November 15, 2011, 09:52:37 AM
Does anyone have good suggestions for dystopian movies?  I'm a big fan of scifi in the genera of Huxley's Brave New World and the Matrix.  I'm still on the fence about seeing Atlas Shrugged (though I am planning on reading the book when I get the time).

Equilibrium is pretty good.

So many movies, so little time:

****I Robot - starring Will Smith, asking whether robots can or need to take over the world
***Minority Report - starring Tom Cruise, asking whether criminals should be punished BEFORE they commit any crime.
?? Farenheit 451 - never seen it, but the book was good
***Titan A.E. - asks how does humanity restart if Earth is gone
***Surrogates - starring Bruce Willis, asking whether we should be replaced by robots
***I am Legend - Will Smith again, asking what if we become our own worst enemies and are alone
**Planet of the Apes - starring Charleston Heston, asking what if apes evolved and conquered
**WALL-E - Pixar movie asking what if pollution destroyed our planet

Equilibrium is pretty good.
Hated it.  I didn't like the lack of originality.

****I Robot - starring Will Smith, asking whether robots can or need to take over the world
Is this really worth watching?  I loved the original Asimov novels.
***Minority Report - starring Tom Cruise, asking whether criminals should be punished BEFORE they commit any crime.
Loved this one.  I really want an interface like the one he has.
?? Farenheit 451 - never seen it, but the book was good
Read the book, heard the movie didn't do it justice
***Titan A.E. - asks how does humanity restart if Earth is gone
Sounds good, I'll check it out.
***Surrogates - starring Bruce Willis, asking whether we should be replaced by robots
I thought this would be another ground out emotional movie, does it make a good point?
***I am Legend - Will Smith again, asking what if we become our own worst enemies and are alone
Great movie, alternate ending (how the book ended) was better.
**Planet of the Apes - starring Charleston Heston, asking what if apes evolved and conquered
Hmm.  I've known this existed for a while, never considered it.
**WALL-E - Pixar movie asking what if pollution destroyed our planet
It's amazing how Pixar can take what is traditionally a kids-only medium and create a movie deserving of this list.

Thanks for the responses so far!  I've also been recommended Gattaca, thoughts?

Yes, in fact I just bought a copy of this because it is worth watching repeatedly.

Yes, I thought it was thought provoking.
***I am Legend - Will Smith again, asking what if we become our own worst enemies and are alone

If you can get past the fact that it is old, it is worth a watch.
**WALL-E - Pixar movie asking what if pollution destroyed our planet

Imo the non-alternate ending was much better. But to that list I would add The Book of Eli. Very, very good.

Go talk to someone in Zuccotti Park. (Or at least was there this morning? o_O)

I must disagree with everyone and say I really didn't like I Am Legend at all, though I don't remember specifically as it's been awhile since I watched it (and it could be because I don't really like Will Smith as an actor).

Gattaca is interesting, I would definitely recommend it.

I Am Legend the book was good. The movie was pathetic.
