The Process

As I have occasionally mentioned, I am not a very good player or deck builder for many different reasons.  So I ask you, what is the process that you use when building a deck?  Where do you start?  How do you decide what cards and combos to use?  How do you decide which strategies you need to protect yourself against?

Also, I am partial to using strange cards in my decks, as in, cards that are not battle-winners, I/P/N's, or other common strategic cards.  How many cards like this is it safe to have in a deck?

And how important are things like searching abilities and drawing abilities to any kind of deck?  Are there other abilities that are important to have in most/all decks?

Any and all advice will be accepted.

Just pick a deck that fits your style, and does what you love to do. ( For me in the past it was drawing, offensive heavy decks/ anything that would win) Lately I've been obsessed with combo decks, so I've been trying to come up with something nobody will see coming. I just sat down and went through different types of combos that would be game breakers. Then once I found my ultimate combo I went through my collection searching for cards to back it up. It's not that hard really. Don't focus so much on all the strategies you might face, focus on what would hinder your strategy and add counters as necessary. (Example, if you're playing with a fbtn deck you might want to add some cards in your deck that combat nasty artifacts like HoH, golden cow etc...) Most importantly make sure your deck accomplishes it's purpose. If it doesn't you need to tweak it until it works. And don't be afraid to try "strange cards", they are sometimes what can make your deck special. Also you need to obviously play it quite a few times and tweak it accordingly.

Good luck, :-*

There's a lot of thought and X factors that go in to deck building.  So it is hard to sum up here.  However, I will give some ideas that will give you a head start.
1st:  I pick an offense I like to try.   Then I pick 8-10 of it's best heroes.  Next, I pick ALL of that offenses battle winners.  Then I pick complimentary cards (like drawing and searching).  Personally, I don't like oddball combinations, so here is where you would pick/put in those odd cards that you like.
2nd:  I pick a defense that will compliment my offense.  I pick 6-8 evil characters, then all that colors battle winners. Very similar process as the offense.
3rd:  I decide if I want/have room for sites.  Then I check for fortresses.  I pick the best arts for the deck
4th:  I pick the 7 best lost souls that go along with the deck (my decks will NOT exceed 56)
5th:  I put in all the valuable doms
6th:  I count to see how far over 50-56 cards I am and then start the elimination process.
7th:  I test the deck on RTS.
That's a general outline that is a part of the process I use.

I'd say you can get away with quite a few. For instance, my deck last season had the following enhancements:
Abraham's Servant to Ur (negate)
Answer to Prayer (search)
Buying Grain (draw/discard)
Jacob's Dream (site access)
Journey to Egypt (site access and ignore)
Obedience of Noah (CTB)
Reuben's Torn Clothes (ignore)
Shoes of Peace (discard)
Balaam's Disobedience (immune)
Chains (return to hand)
Expelling the Jews (interrupt, return to territory)
Heavy Taxes (draw, discard, end battle)
Lurking (interrupt, band)
Mask of Fear (negate)
Namaan's Chariot and Horses (interrupt, draw, play)

Some of these are negate/interrupt or a conventional (semi-)CBN battle winner. The italicized ones are less conventional battle winners. The bolded ones don't fit any of the categories you list. :)

As many as you want. Heck, More than you want!

Me, I usually have an apostrophy (You mean epiphiny!), I feel like lightning has struck my brain (Ouch, That must of hurt(A cookie to anyonw who knows this quote) with an idea. I then go work on that idea. By doing the following
A: Grabbing any and all cards that fit this idea
B: Removing off brigade ones that I do not need
C: Cutting down the deck below 70 cards.
D: Adding supportive artifacts/a defense
E: Realize I forgot my doms
D: Add Sog Nj aotl Don Cm FA
E: Cut more cards to get to 70
F: Play and find problems with the deck
G: Tweak
H: Profit

LOL this happens to me ALL The time.  I get so focused on the brigade and battle winners when I count it up and realize I left out the doms I just roll my eyes and try to wrack my brain to figure out what I have to leave out.

I like to take the most popular and successful decks, then morph them into something that more resembles something created by RR.   :D

I like to take a simple cool combo that I found and then build the deck off of that. This usually involves finding the right themes for both offense and defense to compliment the combo.

I find a card that would be sweet to play over and over again, or an ability that I want to play over and over again. I then build a rediculus combo deck around one card, realize its not working because the combo doesn't draw out often enough, and simplify it down to a deck with a smaller combo and more diverse fire-power.
