Title: REQUEST: What decks are most popular?
Post by: Bryon on January 27, 2010, 01:09:16 PM
In tournaments:

What are the top 3 offenses you see?

What are the top 3 defenses you see?

Any stand-alone characters used very often?

What are the 3 most commonly seen artifacts?

I am looking for what is most commonly used, not just what you think is strongest.

Thanks in advance for your help!

My responses aren't necessarily ranked, just listed.

Offenses
1. Splashtastic, meaning: I'll just use the best Heroes from three brigades along with the Enhancements that they can use and call it a day.
2. ZTemple Teal/Green
3. Territory Decon with Garden Tomb

Note: All three of the above included several drawing cards/combos.

Defenses
1. Philistines
2. Babylonians
3. Splashtastic, meaning: I'll just use a hand full of one block wonders and stand alones.

Stand alone Characters
Uzzah, KoT, Philistine Garrison, and The Strong Angel

Artifacts
1. Holy Grail
2. Unholy Writ
3. Hidden Treasures/Captured Ark (don't remember which I saw more)

Now heres a question-

If these cards mentioned are considered strongest meta so far, then what would rank next strongest if these became weaker?

Lol.  Are we seeing now why so many of us complain that all tournament decks look the same?  Now I agree that "all" is an exaggeration, but when you see the same 3 or 4 decks mentioned over and over, isn't something wrong with that?

Actually, I find it interesting that there are so many DIFFERENT offenses and defenses mentioned so far (about 10 of each).

There are the clear top-dogs: TGT and Green prophets for offense; Philistines and Babylonians for defense; Uzzah for stand alones; Unholy Writ, CoF, and Captured Ark for artifacts.

After these top dogs, it seems to be a regional/state thing.  Some see a lot of Genesis, others Royalty, others splash, etc.

Thank you all for your comments.  They were VERY helpful.  While we don't want to nerf these cards/decks completely, we are taking careful steps to ensure ways around these cards and strategies in the next set.

The fact that you are asking the people what they think leads me to expect that the next set is going to be very satisfying. :) I just hope it's big...

What do you consider big?

My only problem with making cards to stop other cards is that you end up with cards like this: (https://www.cactusforums.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.redemptionreg.com%2FREG%2FLinkedDocuments%2FBlinding%2520Demon%2520%28Pi%29.gif&hash=03ddfde95664ce4a978aa8c54c0880e78c15ccc7)
now dont get me wrong, this is a great card! Even if your not playing a type 2 ambush deck which is prob what this card was focused on. But it still has great numbers and targets speed. Why is it not played?

maybe create a new card that puts characters face down for evil to make this card stronger...

If RTSmaniac is saying what I think he's saying, then I completely agree. Right now, only a very small percentage of cards in the game see much play, because you keep just making more and more better and better cards. Instaed of making just a bunch of useful cards, make a bunch of useful cards that also make other cards useful. For example, I had an idea a while ago for a new Kindness card that made your opponent draw cards. This one stone would kill a few birds by (1) helping Luke/John's drawing strategy, (2) making Good Samaritan usable, and (3) (because of (2)) making Samaritan Water Jar easier to use to its full extent. Of course, not all cards can be this productive, but you can at least make potentially useful cards like Blinding Demon and Good Samaritan into actually used cards by making cards that complement them. Yes, you have been doing that to some extent with cards like Windows of Narrow Light, Spirit as a Dove, etc., but I think that (especially in this economic time) such should be the primary focus of Cactus right now.

What do you consider big?
Well, certainly not 60 cards. 50 is small, 100 is average, 150 is big, and 200 or higher is incredible (roughly). If possible, I hope you could at least shoot for 200, although I sincerely doubt we'll see that many cards in the next set, at the rate we've been going.

BTW, I may have said "you" or "we" a lot. When I say this, I usually mean either the card creators or the Redemption community in general.

<--would rather have 75-100 cards that are more than situation specific (like most commons) than a large expansion...but I also like rarity...so I'm not sure what the right solution is...

Yeah it is a delicate balance!  I would LOVE a 200 card expansion, but being a collector as much as I am a player it would not be good for me to try to start collecting 800 or so cards due to the lack of a good paying job!  I know that it would also be very difficult for younger players who don't even have jobs to come close to completing a set, especially get enough of them for type 2.

Younger players shouldn't be playing T2 anyway.
