Would a purple (disciple)/clay offense work Well? If so what would be a good start to it?

It certainly works. There are a few cards specifically made for it such as Reassuring Angels. Disciple staples are a must, as are the Disciples that have a clay version (Peter, Matthias, John+Poly). The main choices you have to make is in finding the balance between clay and purple enhancements.
