Title: Offense: Balancing Act
Post by: Sean on November 13, 2009, 03:12:56 PM
I wanted to make a turtle that has an offense based around using Balance in the end game to decimate the opponent's defense.  This is what I came up with.  What do you think?  I put DoN and Captured Ark there since they would be needed to take care of Wasting Disease and Darius' Decree.  It's got a few things that it can do before the end game but the idea is to mostly wait in order to maximize Balance.

Cards in deck: 19

Grim Reaper Dominants: 1
   Destruction of Nehushtan

White Covenant Cards: 1
   Captured Ark (Crimson)

Red Covenant Cards: 1
   I am Creator

Green Covenant Cards: 1
   I am Patience

Silver Heroes: 2
   Angel at Jerusalem
   Cherubim

Red Heroes: 4
   Asahel
   Caleb
   Mentor
   Spy

Purple Heroes: 2
   Ethiopian Treasurer
   King Hezekiah

Multi-Color Hero Enhancements: 3
   Balance
   Burning Censer
   Spiritual Warfare

Red Hero Enhancements: 3
   A Soldier's Prayer
   David's Mighty Men
   Freedom!

Purple Hero Enhancements: 1
   Authority of Christ

I keep seeing the word "turtle" referring to new decks, but what exactly is a turtle deck?

i truly believe balance is one of the most underrated and underused cards of all time, so props for trying a deck with it.

however, if you're playing with a turtle, you're more than likely going to have more evil out than good, which kinda counters balance.

Pfft, i tried a deck with it a month or two ago.  ;)

The key to using balance effectively is using a deck with a HUGE amount of evil characters, and as few heroes as possible.

I guess I can go ahead and post this offense I made, the offense I'm keeping secret because its just so much fun:

Yes, this was in a 105 card deck, because that means I can have that many more EC's to offset the balance.

Cards in deck: 105
Fortresses: 3
   Jerusalem Tower
   Kerith Ravine
   Storehouse

Silver Heroes: 3
   Captain of the Host
   Seraph
   Seraph

Red Heroes: 1
   Jephthah

Green Heroes: 2
   Habakkuk
   Habakkuk

Purple Heroes: 2
   Ethiopian Treasurer
   Ethiopian Treasurer

Multi-Color Hero Enhancements: 2
   Balance
   Brass Serpent

Silver Hero Enhancements: 2
   Gathering of Angels
   Gathering of Angels

I'd hold them off till they deck, then, drop any EEs i dont need into storehouse for that much more offset, then blast them. If they kept anyone in hand, Jephth + Captian should be enough to walk through.

See my deck for the solution. Habakkuk is awesome.

Nope. I have two of each hero I need, plus Brass Serpent. I can keep guys in K Ravine or in hand if I need to.

Yeah, Habakkuk is great.

Btw, I only got to play one game with this offense, but it did in fact win. Discarding over 20 evil cards in one hit was very satisfying.

Is balance able to get rid of placed evil cards as well?

Yes. Balance kills ANY evil cards in play, so long as they arent protected, which shouldn't happen if you use Habakkuk.

This includes:

Evil Characters
Evil enhancements in storehouses or in battle or placed elsewhere in play
Evil fortresses
Curses

habbakuk only hits wc ec's. what if they have non-wc ec's that are protected by a fort?

i can see a turtle of this deck doing fairly well. i am holy to hit any evil in hand, set fire to hit their backfield, and balance/cap for game. just curious, why cap over tsa?

Read Habbakuk's SA. Also, Gathering is one of my favorite cards in the game.

*edit*

Captian might encourage them to put more than one EC down to band, Jephth hits both next turn.

...you may discard a warrior class evil character...

im asking about evil characters that are not wc, but are still protected by forts.

You skipped over the only reason I put Habakkuk in there.

which was explicitly stated? no.

im guessing you gather habbakuk into your seraphim/et/balance band.

Bingo.

But, I thought my comment of loving gathering was pretty obvious.

my first impression was using cap with gathering.

Hehe. Naw, anyone who knows my decks would realize I use gathering on someone else.  :) Remember, I pretty much specialize in combo offenses.

However, I think I could easily throw in I am Holy + chamber + another angel to help empty their hand.

thats what i do in my turtles. if you're turtling, you kinda wanna cripple them in every way. if they see you're using i am holy, they'll more than likely drop their ec's in territory, creating more food for balance.

the three angels i always use for chamber/i am holy loops are tsa, cap, and gabe. you probably just need to simply add in tsa.

Yeah. Also, gathering is great in endgame/combo decks, because you usually have to wait for them to deck, so why not just add some extra punch with a band.

That's why I put in Burning Censer.

i dont really like BC that much. Its easily negated and gives the EC's more initative when they block you (and it doesnt even kill anyone), since theres no *normally* feasable way to play both BC and balance before they block. Its possible, but its difficult. I find it easier to just gather in Habakkuk.
