How does a player effectively play a hand control type deck?

I have heard of decks that are hand control like and just wondering how does a player play such decks without discarding too much of their best heroes / Evil characters , enhancements??

Does a player discard just heroes or good enhancements? or mostly defense cards??

or do you just discard one card in your hand and hope for the best??

Decks like Genegyptians , genesis hand control etc

and cards like

I am Holy

7 years of Famine

Denarius  etc.

Look at the 2013 Nationals winning deck.

This is the limit of netdecking.  Josiah's deck was solid, but rc777's points are incredibly valid: What do I discard with I am Holy?  When do I play the control portions?  How do I know which blocker is going to get the most benefit this one rescue?  When is my evil dom going to have the greatest impact?

It's not just having the cards.  Knowing how to play hand control is probably among the top difficult designs in the game, IMO.  I know I haven't had the patience to learn it, but top players (in both T1 and T2) can turn a good deck design into an amazing combo through knowledge and practice.

One popular strategy is to combine I am Holy with Heroes like Gabriel or Isaiah that can get back whatever enhancement you discarded--essentially turning I am Holy into a cost-free discard. I am Holy by itself is not enough for a hand control deck but you can combine it with cards like Simeon (Blue Hero), Job Overcomes (Blue Enhancement), Sorrow of Mary (Gray Enhancement) and Vain Philosophy (Evil Dominant) to keep your opponent's hand small. Another way to do hand control is to simply use cards like Rain Becomes Dust or Golden Cherubim to keep your opponent from drawing.

Denarius and Seven Years of Famine are a bit harder to use as you don't want to end up hurting yourself by discarding too much. This is especially true if your opponent has cannot be negated drawing options--you'll end up hand controlling yourself because your opponent will still have the card advantage if he's been drawing and you haven't.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

There are too many variables and options to say when to use various hand discard. That's learned with practice, knowledge of the card pool and your opponents deck.

Here is an in depth explanation of hand control.
