Title: Dominant Choices
Post by: Bobbert on September 17, 2018, 06:25:40 PM
Let's get a bit of discussion going.

To my mind, in T1 every competitive deck has five of its seven dom slots taken out of the gate: SoG, TSC, AotL, CM, and 3W. Obviously there are exceptions, and people make decks without some of these, but even then that's usually for jokier decks and they come back to this core when building seriously.

After this, though, things become more interesting. Some decks have a dom that directly relates into that deck (Holy Spirit, ANB, Glory). Most, though, have two slots left to fill. The most common ones that I've seen are Grapes and Falling Away (either version, though I saw more CoW this year). That said, there are certainly other options - John proved what a terrifying beast Mayhem is this year (although it's a much more challenging card to play/build into a deck), GoYS sees some play especially now that it can block DoU and the like, Shipwreck tends to find at least some value since everyone plays Ends, and if even DoN still sees some play.

So, how do you decide which doms to fill your last slots with? Do you have preferences? If it depends on the deck, how do you decide which to run?

You forgot Doubt...

I doubt it was an oversight... ::)

The Doms coming in phase 1 & 2 of PoC will add some flavor. There’s one that’ll be great in a niche deck, another that will compete for slots 6 or 7 and one (we’re saving for phase 2) that might become a staple!

Shoot, you're right!

Okay, so six staples and one flex, then.

I typically play T2 so we get the fun of running up to 14 dominants 8), but in T1 I run NJ instead of TSC and likewise don't have a 3W, so I have 3 spots left to fill after the classic 4. I value versatility which is why I typically always run Grapes at slot #5. Then slots 6 and 7 will depend on what is needed for the particular deck. Falling Away (Wo) and Destruction of Nehushtan are typically what make the final cut (assuming it's not a thematic deck using The Holy Spirit/Glory of the Lord/etc, as you discussed).

Aggressive Deck = Best Value
Sog/TSC/AOTL/CM/Grapes/3W
Flex between Falling Away (either)/GoyS

Balanced Deck that plays substantial defense in comparison to aggressive decks
Sog/TSC/AOTL/3W/CM
Shipwreck/DoN but one of either
Falling Away/Grapes
True Flex

Defensive Heavy i.e Job
Sog/TSC/Grapes/CM/3W
Don/Shipwreck
Vain Philosphy/Strife
Aotl/Falling Away
