Title: Best anti meta themes?
Post by: Ironisaac on August 11, 2016, 04:05:35 PM
What are the themes, for offense and defense, that best combat the meta decks right now? When I think of meta decks, I'm mostly thinking of a BOM offense, a I Samuel offense, a brown/orange defense, or a crimson defense. These might not be the best defenses out there, but those are the ones I've seen most commonly used. I'm really curious, because so many directions to go when making decks with the new cards, that I want to be able to best take out the decks that are most commonly used.

This is more of an idea than a specific card or list, but I think interrupts are extremely strong right now, even more so than normally. CBN is way down now that it has an actual hard counter so you can't just make a deck full of it anymore and CBP is the number one choice with the prevalence of FBTN powerhouses like Captain and Moses. A simple interrupt and discard is something that I often find myself "Oh this won't win me a battle I could have something better in here", but then during a game thinking of all the opportunities one negate would have to swing the entire game around.

Agreed^^ Negates and interrupts are definitely back in the game thanks to Coliseum. Black has a lot of them, and Philistines have some powerful big dudes that force people to play their battle winners while you're sitting ready with a negate.

Household Idols is amazing in this meta; the problem is finding an offense to play that doesn't include many banding cards  :D  Judges and Tabernacle Priests are best paired with HHI, as well as some Moses offenses.

CWD is another powerful card that you usually don't see in T1.  CWD, paired with Coliseum and Philistines, would be fantastic.  The problem with Philistines is their susceptibility to AotL, HG, and HSR, 3 cards that are in so many T1 decks right now, and that they aren't the fastest defense around.

I would add mono-Silver as one of the best offenses to use when you're running HHI.

Hmm... Well, from what most people are saying, it seems like I inadvertently built my friend an anti meta deck lol.

Characters that grant cbn seem to be more prevalent due to coliseum and Moses. Sisera is probably the one I've seen the most since it can splash with Phils easily.

+1 Sisera is easily a Top 10 EC right now.

Huge fan of Naaman (and Syrians) obviously. The one thing that bums me out is that it's hard to use him and Entrapping Pharisees together because of the OT/NT requirements. If either one didn't have that restriction, there would have been a ton more Gray defenses I think--particularly Syrians/Pharisees because of the Damascus synergy.

True, but a few nice things about them:  Naaman doesn't require another Syrian in play (like Nergalsharezar), so he can be splashed into a NT Gray defense quite easily, and The Entrapping Pharisees can reveal a NT Gray character (Romans work great for this).

I'm sure things are different in T2, but in T1, just the threat of Naaman + Deluge of Rain/Lurking/Night Raid (with Syrian Mercenaries to search/recur him) to accompany a Gray splash defense with some Romans, Entrapping, and a few other standalone ECs makes for a very powerful defense.  If you manage to play 1 CBN EE on Naaman, he's done his duty.

Funny enough I'm not sure if Namaan is the best anti meta Syrian. I think King Rezin might be better. At least in regards to dealing with Moses and other fbtn heros besides captain. But that is just because gray lacks OT interrupts outside negates and horses and Namaan passes initiative where as King Rezin doesnt. I will say that Rezin is more situational though and with cards like every man's sword and horses Namaan can be a powerhouse.
