Title: abom
Post by: Carl deuty on February 08, 2011, 11:25:37 AM
Ok, I was wondering how Abom was doing after the release of the new set. I am wanting to make an abom deck, but since I never made one even prior to disciples, I just don't know what to do. I have been told to never make an abom deck bigger than 50 cards but that seems to me like the my defense wouldn't hold up. If anyone could point a brother in the right direction on how to go about making an awesome abom deck, it would be much appreciated. Thanks

My defense would usually be Greeks and Heretics because philetus is both a Greek and a Heretic, and with Heretics the defense isn't that big but the sites take up a lot of room.

I agree that a 50 card Abom Site lock can be devastating, and this is what I use for my Abom deck.  But in my cases it fails against a speed deck IF I can't get Abom out fast enough.  I've played two games now where Abom was one of my bottom 3 cards, and my opponent may be decked out by the time I get it out :(

But I like a site defense with Abom because I can systematically remove their site access cards.  Some good cards to consider using if you use sites - Wastelands, Joseph in Prison (removes those site access cards from the game), Golden Calf and Confusion of Mind (for those "access to any site" characters), High Places (obviously).  Land dispute would be awesome, but because I need room for Greeks I don't have any Philistines :(

I also suggest The Name of the Lord as a good way to keep recurring your "draw a card" heroes.  Hope this helps in some way.

is it important to be able to recur your enhancements that make them draw or just the heroes that do?

I do use Good Samaritan so that he can recall Kindness.  Doesn't the new "Kindness" make them draw?  I also use the gold enhancement that lets me get one out of my discard pile.  Personally, my Abom is busy enough helping my defense that I rarely get to use it against their defense.  Because of this I have a lot of gold battle winners and negates in my deck.  Also a VERY cool card if you're using sites is the gold hero enhancement that discards two sites!  I forget what its called, but that has been an awesome card to help my defense.  I also use Zaccheus (a Luke hero) to help get High Places or Name of the Lord out, and I use Angel of Warning to help get sites and good fortresses out too.  Just be aware that an Abom deck is always susceptible to CONFUSION taking it right out of your draw pile, probably handing them the game.  The Goat with Horn is essential for this reason.

yeah, kindness makes them draw. Would a 56 card Abom deck hurt more than help?

I'm one of the biggest advocates of 50 cards decks, but if I were to play Abom I can almost guarantee it would be 56.  Although I would never do it, I know some very talented players that use 63, even 70 card Abom decks, including the 3rd place T1-2P deck from Nationals 2010.  It's hard to argue with results.  ;)

Abom doesn't need to be defensive. I know Pol posted an awesome example of that pre-disciples. I've played with something similar this year, and it has done okay.

That would be VENGEANCE OF ETERNAL FIRE!!!

Yep, that's the one.  A perfect compliment to Gold/Abom/Sites.  Thanks!

The offense of an Abom deck in the current scene benefits greatly from being White/Gold for Benedictus. CP is one of the biggest detriments to Abom this year, and having an easy way to remove it (as well as a blast of MtM+Holy Grail for a 3 character sweep pre-battle in a single turn).

The defense should be compact, fast and recurrable. I like Heretics or Pharisees as the meat of the defense for this reason. Both have a Greek in their Brigade and ample recursion. Pharisees speed up the deck more while Heretics are bulkier. However, both are weak to FbtNB and Disciples, so be sure to include a few support cards to help combat them (Confusion of Mind and HHI are highly recommended as they counter both).

Confusion of Mind of mind doesn't work that good against a Phllip Bart band. I found that one out the hard way :'(

No, but a small defense is going to be much less worried about them than about Thaddeus or Matthew.
