I'd love to see a competitive 57 card deck and I think if we go another year or two without rotation it might actually start happening.

Edit: For some reason I thought your deck at Nats was 50 cards and this was just a 57 card version. Guess I got my wish because your deck was definitely competitive!

Deck Commentary

There were many reasons I decided a 57 card deck was a legitimate threat this season. First, and most importantly, I felt this specific build could be just as fast as any 50-51 card deck. Even the fastest Throne or Flood deck still needs at least three turns to win, and I felt confident this deck could keep up (or catch up) given at least three turns. With that in mind, it seemed logical to me that if speed was not an issue then having an 8th dominant could be what would tip the game in my favor. Granted one of the dominants (Vain Vision) was primarily an acceleration tool, not a battle winning option, but I felt it could serve in a very similar role as Mayhem did for John's deck last year (without having to drop my hand low). I also believed (correctly as it turns out), that there could be legitimate Mill decks in the field (having tested one fairly extensively myself), and that having 57 would give me an edge in that match-up.

Dominants
I believe this is a fairly straightforward dominant line-up. Several months ago, I tried this deck against an early version of John's CwD/CtB deck and I won a very close game where CwD gave me all kinds of trouble. With the growing popularity of Storehouse, I decided that it made sense to cut Vain Philosophy (which had been making a very sneaky comeback until Storehouse came out) and add DoN specifically for CwD match-ups. While I'm definitely a fan of the versatility of the CoW Falling Away, I knew I needed to run the old version in the event I got off to a bad start and needed to prolong the game.

Lost Souls
Also a pretty straightforward package. It was really nice being able to add Dull back into the mix with the 8th LS slot as it served as another search deterrent, which are crucial in the current meta.

Heroes
Mostly standard Revelation Angels offense with the exception of John. As much as I didn't like adding a human (especially one with 2 brigades), John is just so much more superior to the next best Revelation angel (Angel at the Altar was in previously). The potential to have turn 1 Remnant grab Polycarp from Reserve and then get John from deck helped mitigate poor draws where I did not have an immediate way to get Michael or Strong Angel early in the game. As I realized in game 3 against Josh however, John the Apoc does mess with Angelic Army's "unity" so there were some games where I just discarded John from hand (when I had enough angels already) and wanted to keep Angelic Army's ability as an option.

GE
Reverance and Awe belongs in a lot more decks than it shows up in, especially with how good Storehouse is. I don't think I ever drew all 3 of my tutor targets (Storehouse, Patmos, Treacherous Land) before drawing R&A so it always got me value. I did have to be careful with using the banish ability since there were some Covenant of Prayers showing up. Other GE are standard for Revelation Angels.

DAC
Despite having 5 DACs, only one of them was used both ways (7th Bowl). I thought about adding one more brown King and adding 6th Bowl, but I think that would have been too hopeful. 4th Bowl, 5th Bowl and War in Heaven are all amazing (especially on John) and King Saul is an obvious choice for a False Prophets/Magicians defense.

EC
Overall my EC line-up worked pretty well. The only change I think I would make is to cut False Leaders for Gomer. Angel of the Lord got me several times when I could have done some severe damage to my opponent. Because I was usually able to keep my hand pretty full, I rarely got to use the recursion part of False Leaders.

EE/Curses
Loved my EE/Curse line-up...Flying Scroll has great versatility in this deck and I wanted to say it was about 50/50 artifact/ee.

Utility
Fairly happen with these selections. I did make one mistake with Great White Throne in that I banished my Vain Visions out of habit of banishing dominants first. I still ended up winning the game (albeit in a time out win) so it's tough to say just how significant of a mistake that was. I could definitely see swapping GWT for Signet Ring as typically it was more important for me to get set up defensively rather than to get out to a blazing start on offense.

Reserve
The other card I really wanted to fit in here was Gam's Speech, but I didn't want to rely on False Leaders and Fifth Seal was usually needed to grab something else. Overall fairly satisfied with the Reserve. Josh H. recommended Lacking Prophecy instead of Fall of Man, and I think it was the right decision. There might have been one time when I wished I had kept Fall of Man instead.

I would argue this deck was most certainly competitive. It had one bad loss to a Throne deck that had turn 1 everything, and a close time out loss to a Flood deck (a game I would have tied with one more round and won with two more rounds). I also blame myself a bit for not getting in more practice so that I could ensure I would have an adequate number of turns to pull out late wins. 8)

Game Reports

Round 1 vs Rex A.

Rex was using a Flood/Rome deck and he got the Noah+Sons band very quickly. However, he did not manage to find his Ark, and that kept him from doing too much damage. I got a lot of ECs down pretty quick and he was trying to use his Faith of Noah for a tutor+board wipe, but knowing he had that, I was able to play around it. If he had used the Faith of Noah to get Ark right away, it likely would have been a much closer game. Final score: 5-0 win.

Round 2 vs JD C.

JD was using a Throne deck, but I was able to go first and got both Wasting Disease and Babel up on turn 1. This kept his offense from getting started and his defense from being very effective. Final score: 5-2 win.

Round 3 vs Josh P.

Josh had opening hand Jeremiah to negate my two Lost Souls (which were Hunter and Prosperity I believe), which definitely kept me from getting a better start. This was a very back and forth game which involved me ripping my first Plot to take out some of his key Heroes and him using the very strong Proud Pharisee/Unsuccessful block. This was the game where I banished Vain Visions with Great White Throne, which made for a very awkward Prophets of Baal block...in the end, I got the time out win. Final score: 4-3 win.

Round 4 vs Jonathan G.

This game got off to a rather poor start as Jonathan had opening hand The Exodus which discarded none other than Son of God right off the bottom of my deck... :'( However, I knew I still had a good chance to win for a couple reasons: 1) my deck was 57 and thus the Mill factor would be mitigated 2) I helped build and test the deck he was using so I knew what I needed to do in order to win--namely, be aggressive and keep the pressure on him to block. That's exactly what I did and though it was a close game for much of the game, I ended up winning 3 LS on the final three turns as he ran out of blocking options. Final score: 5-2 win.

Round 5 vs Josiah B.

Even though Josiah had the advantage with LS by drawing both Darkness and Exiles, I was feeling pretty good with my opening hand holding Woes and Martyr. I allowed Exiles to resolve even though he grabbed I am Creator as my plan was to use Martyr on the AutO I surmised he would take. When I am Creator instead pulled out Abigail, my heart sank as I knew that could only mean he also had AutO in his opening hand...sure enough, everything came out, and I was scrambling the entire game and never caught quite up. In the end, I never even used Martyr though I might have been able to stall one more turn if I had sniped Ahimelek before Josiah's final rescue. Final score: 0-5 loss.

Round 6 vs. Charles L.

This is the game where Wasting Disease really shined. I got it out turn 1 and basically forced Charles to trade a card every time he searched for something. I also got Babel fairly early and this put added pressure on his defense (stopped a potential Uzzah block). Eventually he pulled Abe's Descendant to snag WD, and this allowed him to start setting up his Genegyptians. We had one epic battle where I played a battle winner, he used a negate, I triggered Polycarp, he used another negate, I used another battle winner, and then he used an interrupt/play next to play Failed Objective. Though he managed to stall in that battle, it used up all his resources while I was able to keep my hand restocked and won a couple turns later as he had no EE left in hand. Final score: 5-0 win.

Round 7 vs Jay C.

This was another epic game with great plays on both sides. At one point Jay had both Unsuccessful and Faith Among Corruption on the table. I used Mourn & Weep followed by Flying Scroll to bait those two negates after which I used Confusion to take out Son of God followed by Reap the Whirlwind to win the battle. I thought I had the game wrapped up at that point, but Jay still had Falling Away and got 2 blocks with Uzzah (recurring him with Noah) as my Babel stayed hidden in deck. He also got off The Flood in a side battle which wiped out both our defenses. I used a Plot to stall his final rescue attempt and salvage a time out loss with Falling Away also still hiding in my deck. Final score: 3-4 loss.

Top Cut Round 1 vs Josh P.

This game was great...but the ending left something to be desired... We went back and forth all game making clutch plays, rescues and blocks. I do recall I had some tough decisions between choosing to draw (Damsel) or having a better chance at a successful block. When the game was 3-3 and Josh was rescuing, I decided my best chance was to surrender LS #4 while playing Mourn & Weep in hopes that I would get 2 more turns to rescue with him missing a rescue in between. Unfortunately we ran out of time, and I only got one more turn to rescue, which got the 4-4 tie only to lose on the higher seed tiebreaker. Final score: 4-4 "loss."

No worries -- the fact that you didn't even realize it was 57 means it worked  ;)

I don't think I ran a 50/51 version of this deck. Previously I had a smaller Crimson splash defense paired with the Revelation Angels that was 51, and that was also pretty effective, but the False Prophets/Magicians seemed like a much sturdier defense.
