Title: Beginner deck ideas???????
Post by: Shofarblower on August 15, 2009, 09:00:57 PM
Hi, I am getting back into the game after about 3 years or so. My son (7) is interested now too and I have just realized that I need help getting back into the swing of deck building. I did alright before, but I can't seem to remember what is good strategy. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a deck that would be good for a beginner that is a little slow with the reading.

thanks

Kevin

If you want something pretty simple, I would try like a purple royalty offense with a gray Syrian defense. I had one of those when I got back into the game and it did pretty well in general.

BTW, welcome to the boards, and welcome back to the game. :)

The simple decks in this game are just 1 brigade offense/defense, 56 card deck with helpful artifacts. =)

How are site lockouts doing nowadays? That is what I atarted with years ago (pre Angel Wars) and I was thinking of that for my son.

QFT.

Site lockout is going strong, but I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. It's a very odd style and takes some playing skill to use effectively.

I would do a sadduce/pharrase defense with a genesis offense

Hey Kevin!

It's steve from DJ's NC tourneys!
Roy cannaday is having a tourney next month in kernersville, NC (look for it on the cactus tourney website).
My boys and I plan to be there-it would be cool if you and your son could attend!
That'll help ya get back into the swing of things!  :)

"Easy" decks are ones that don't have negates in them. Simple discard or capture or even converts can be good for a beginner. Good Gold (Furnace and Converts) and Evil Crimson (Captures and Numbers with banding) are pretty easy for starters.

When you say genesis offense, do you mean heros with a genesis scripture reference on them?

There are a number of Genesis heroes, as well as enhancements to support them, found within the blue brigade (as well as a couple of Genesis heroes from other brigades that play nicely with them, such as Angel at Shur).  It is one of the more powerful offenses, but quite easy to learn and fairly easy to get since most of the cards are found in tins.

Meant like a blue gen offense with the angel at the shur i believe it is. Jacob can band to him XD

From around what "era" is the majority of your cards?  That may help us figure out what would be good for you to start with.  "Genesis" Offense for examples makes use of a lot of cards from Faith of our Fathers and Rock of Ages.  If you have none or very little cards from each, then Genesis may not be for you.  So what sets do you have?

How about you use garden tomb? ;D it is so awesome to play, lots of fun strategies, and best off, you only need one tin, and extras from other sets!

Right now I am working with a very limited budget and cards spanning everything up to Priests. I have some FooF and RoA, but not much. Unfortunately, I thought I was totally done and sold all my LS right after Priests. I have gotten some back but not all the good ones.

My friend uses a Kings offense/defense with as many negates and repeat last card(to add another negate) as he can. It's quite frustrating as the negates add */* to his stats already.

If you have the cards, and it sounds like you do, you could make a discard defense, and use small evil guys to gain initiative and then use that initiative to discard heroes in territories, and then in battle.  Use a card like Great Image, if you have it, for late game discards.  Use a starter deck card like 'deluge of rain' to discard a bunch of heroes that banded against your small fry evil guy.  Use the starter decks enhancements to remove all cards in opponents discard pile from game to prevent searches to pull back up the heroes.  It's a simple strategy to remember, not too hard to follow, and is effective.  If the opponent has no heroes to fight, they can't rescue lost souls.  Use the starter deck card with SA immune to humans to prevent the few heroes that aren't discarded from being able to reach the lost souls.

I'd go with that. My girls used to put in cards "because they were pretty", I wouldn't go with that. :]
Also, there is the "rule of 7"  Seven heroes, seven souls, seven sites, seven enhancements ect.
Maybe a few games in, have the boy experiment with splashing in an off brigade character that can be banded in...

Gray is good if you know to use it

Syrians aren't too complicated, less so at least than any other brigade.

I'd say Assyrians are easiest to pick up and play. They're the most straight-forward Brigade.

I think Black is pretty easy.  DOMINATE EVERYTHING!  ;D

If you're able to get a hold of the new cards, Philistines are relatively simple. Assyrians are pretty straight-forward, too. I just said Syrians because I think it's the most underrated brigade.

I reply to let you guys know that I am reading and considering the suggestions. I think I can work with some of your ideas. It looks like I need to find an "Abom". I don't think I have one. I did just find a local store that carries TexP ( ;D YAY!!!!! ;D 8) :o :o :o). I still don't have alot of great cards from the set but did pull out a King Solomon and Woman at the Well. (WatW goes into deck ;D) I am currently doing okay with my crimson def. My son's deck is using Egyptians and sites, did alright at the last tourny but he is still not ready to take on all comers at a tournament (still having some reading issues). I used his deck to playtest it at Roy's first tourny in September (5/4 I lost).

I personally like my Crimson Defense, it is extremely annoying and I know how to use it better than most players I have come up against so far. The last opponent just kept dropping his head and going "man!". I know it isn't the most played or the highest praised brigade, but, to me the game is more about how the individual plays, than how the cards are most popularly used.

Again, thanks for all the advice (and keep it coming).

If you can get some of the new cards, Babylonians have made crimson a very solid defense weither it be capture, or just annoying.  I played with a Babylonian defense in multi-player and it did really well!  So I'm sure it does really good one-on-one.

I think the most well rounded is pale green. It is carzy but crimson is def a close 2nd
